Brakes the mouse cursor: twitches, freezes. What can be done?

Good time.

In this note, we will talk about the incorrect operation of the mouse: when the cursor jerks, slows down, but still moves (i.e. the mouse generally reacts to your actions). If your mouse does not respond and does not work at all, I recommend this instruction to you.

I will also note that in the note we will not disassemble the mouse and eliminate those. malfunctions with a soldering iron (the question will only relate to software problems - that is, our mouse is a priori considered serviceable, and diagnosed on another PC / laptop).

Now, specifically on the topic ...

The main reasons why the mouse cursor can slow down

For wireless mice

Most often, this problem (with cursor brakes) concerns wireless mice (both with radio modules and Bluetooth versions). Therefore, first a few words about them ...

Reason 1: distance to adapter

Pay attention to which USB port the radio mouse adapter is connected, and where it is located. For example, if you use the USB port on the back of the PC, and the mouse is located 2-3 meters away from it, it is quite possible that the reason for the brakes lies in distance *.

👉 The shorter the distance, the better!

* Note!

In general, wireless mice can operate at a distance of ≈10 meters (some models up to 15 meters). But from experience I can say that many models start working incorrectly even at 3 m.

Advice in this regard are quite simple:

  1. connect the USB adapter to the front of the PC;
  2. decrease the distance between the adapter and the mouse;
  3. by the way , I have often noticed that if you have one common USB adapter for a mouse and keyboard (there are now such sets), it may appear. brakes. It is better to have separate adapters for the mouse and keyboard.

The adapter is connected to the USB port on the front panel of the system unit

Reason 2: batteries

Another fairly popular attack on wireless mice is dead batteries. Moreover, you need to understand that when the battery runs out during operation, the mouse does not stop working immediately, but gradually:

  1. first, the brightness of the glow of the LED (if any) decreases;
  2. then your clicks sometimes stop working (but if you swap the batteries in the mouse, then everything seems to be temporarily restored);
  3. after that, problems begin with moving the cursor: it becomes more difficult for them to select text, it reacts more slowly to your actions, etc.;
  4. and only then the mouse will stop working at all.

By the way, if you haven't used the mouse for more than a month, and there are old batteries inside it, they could oxidize (and damage the contacts inside its case). In this case, the mouse often has to be changed after the batteries ...

Checking mouse settings

To open the mouse settings - press the combination of buttons Win + R, in the appeared window "Run" enter commandcontrol mouse and press Enter.

Alternative option: open the Windows Control Panel, and under "Hardware and Sound" follow the link "Mouse" ... See screenshot below.

Hardware and Sound - Mouse (Windows Control Panel)

Next, you need to open the tab Pointer Options and set the speed of its movement (some have set the speed too low and they believe that the mouse is slowing down ...).

Also note that the checkbox is unchecked. "Display pointer trail" .

Try to connect to a different port

For diagnostics purposes, it is highly desirable to connect the mouse to another USB port (by the way, you can also use special adapters to connect a USB mouse to the PS / 2 port). Often, thanks to PS / 2, it is possible to completely get rid of the problem (this is important for a PC).

USB to PS / 2 adapters

By the way, also pay attention to the type of ports: now the most common are USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 (the latter are marked in blue, see the picture below). If you connected the mouse to USB 3.0, try using USB 2.0.

Somehow I met one laptop in which 2 USB 3.0 ports (from one end) did not allow connecting either a joystick or a mouse (there were slowdowns and waiting) - but the USB 2.0 port (from the other end) worked perfectly with these gadgets. ..

Another prime example: USB 2.0 and USB 3.0

What about the surface on which the mouse slides

Depending on the type of mouse - its work can significantly depend on the surface on which it moves:

  • optical mice work well on most types of surfaces, with the exception of glossy and glass coatings;
  • laser mice work anytime, anywhere (but they are very sensitive to various irregularities, crumbs, dust);
  • ball mice (now they are rare) - special was required for them. a rug (on the surface of an ordinary desk - they worked very badly).

Mouse pads

So, what I am all about, even modern optical mice (the most popular type) do not always work well on some surfaces. If the surface of your table is somewhat "non-standard" (for example, it has been treated with a special waterproof coating), this may affect the operation of the mouse.

Be that as it may, I recommend trying the work of a mouse with a special. a rug (this is not only a decorative item, but an improvement in the accuracy of cursor hovering ☝). As a last resort, take a simple sheet of paper (A4 format) for diagnostics and place it under the mouse.

What about CPU and disk usage

A high load on the processor or hard disk can seriously affect the operation of the mouse (and the entire system as a whole). At the same time, freezing is not excluded (for 1-5 seconds, when the mouse does not move at all).

👉 By the way, if there are frequent freezes, the disk is constantly loaded at 90-100% (even in Windows safe mode) and you can hardly copy any file from partition to partition - this may indicate a hardware problem with the disk ...

For diagnostics - try booting from the LiveCD disk and check the operation of the system as a whole.

To see the current load on the CPU and disk, you can use the task manager (to call it, press the combination Ctrl + Alt + Del or Ctrl + Shift + Esc).

It is advisable to wait for the moment when the mouse starts to slow down with the dispatcher window open - and see if there is a peak load of up to 100% on the CPU or disk.

Disk load, CPU

In general, this topic is somewhat extensive, therefore, if the mouse brakes are associated with a high load, I recommend that you read the articles below. 👇

Problem with the mouse driver, video card (the cursor constantly leaves a trail ...)

If you have some non-standard gaming or multimedia mouse (with additional buttons on the sides), it is possible that Windows uses a classic driver when working with it (which does not work correctly with such equipment).

It is highly desirable to change it to the native one (by downloading from the manufacturer's website or installing from the disk / flash drive that came with the mouse).

👉 To help!

You can also update drivers in auto-mode using the special. utilities. I talked about them here: //ocomp.info/update-drivers.html#Driver_Booster

Additional buttons on the gaming mouse

By the way, also in case of problems with the driver on the video card (for example, when you did not update it after reinstalling the Windows OS) - there may be "small" artifacts on the screen, for example, a trace from the movement of the mouse cursor (it seems that it "sticks" or slows down when moving) ...

Usually, if everything is in order with the video driver, in the device manager you can see the model of the video card, and in the tray there will be a link to the driver control panel. An example is in the screenshot below.

Device Manager, Desktop

If you cannot find the icon to open the control panel, but there are exclamation marks in the device manager, you should update the driver for the video card (what Windows 10 sets by default does not always work correctly). Link below for help ...
