"Modern" prefix Dendy: one day of nostalgia in "Mario", "Tanks", "Motocross" (or how to play in Dendy on a new TV in 4K)

Friday evening ...

I pick up a small package at the post office and move with anticipation towards the house ...

The package (as you might guess from the title of the article) contained the Dendy prefix - of course, upon arrival, it was immediately connected to the TV 😉.

Well, then I "failed" for 2-3 hours 20+ years ago - I was overwhelmed by the nostalgia of childhood: "Tanchiki", "Mario", "Contra", etc.

For some reason, thoughts ran through my head: "Will color TV sit down ?!", "But I passed this level at midnight ... at 97", "And thanks to this game I met Oleg ...", etc.

Eh ...

Good time everyone!

I could not start such a note without lyrics 👆 (the prefix left a strong impression).

In general, today in a note I wanted to give a couple of ways how you can play hits of the 90s (in Dendy) on a modern PC / TV / Monitor (in good quality - in FullHD / 4K). It is possible that among the readers there are also many who were once fond of this prefix and it will be interesting ...

How to play Dendy

Option 1: using prefixes

About a month ago, I saw on AliExpress one small "tempting flash drive" with HDMI output (see photo below 👇) - this is the same Dendy set-top box (with 500+ built-in games. I took a model from Data Frog (not advertising, you can search and in other stores: Ozon, Citilink, etc.)).

Of course, this modern Dendy is strikingly different from those of the 90s:

  • firstly, it is much smaller;
  • secondly, it supports high quality images (up to 4K);
  • thirdly, she does not have a light pistol (which means that you cannot play "Ducks" and "Plates" ... 😢);
  • fourthly, old cartridges cannot be connected to it (this is important for those who still have them ...).

What a modern set-top box from Data Frog looks like: HDMI output (and USB for powering the set-top box)

What the console looked like in the 90s

In my version of the console, the menu with games is divided into several genres (arcade, sports, shooters, etc.). Everything is quite convenient: to move from one section to another, use the key Select (to exit the game in the menu - just hold down Select + Start for 3-4 sec.)

Below I took a few photos from the monitor screen (special, so that no one doubts the "fake" screenshots).

Photo 2 - Tanchiki

Photo 4 - Mario

Photo 5 - Contra

Photo 6 - Motocross

Photo 7 - Duck Tales

Photo 8 - Kung Fu

What can I say about my prefix (its "+/-"):

  1. a big plus in its compactness: the joystick and "this flash drive" can be taken anywhere without any problems, and connected to any modern screen (where there is HDMI). For example, I'm thinking of connecting it to one of the monitors at work 😉 (I chose the right HDMI port and play!);
  2. lack of wires;
  3. most games run well on it (however, there are those that slow down!);
  4. gives a very good picture;
  5. after two hours of playing, I noticed that it became hot (perhaps, if you play without interruptions and your room is hot, it can burn out. This is an assumption ...).

Option 2: with the help of special. emulator programs

Now on the net you can find many emulator programs, incl. and the Dendy consoles (known abroad by the name "NES").

So, similar ля emulators can be downloaded and installed on your laptop (PC) + a collection of toys for them. See below for an example. 👇

Of course, playing without joysticks is extremely inconvenient ...

Therefore, any computer store can purchase a joystick (👇) and connect it, for example, to a USB port (by the way, now there are gamepads on sale very similar to those from Dendy).

Actually, then you can play at least laptop (PC), at least for TV (fortunately, most laptops have an HDMI output, and their connection to a TV is extremely simple ...).

The advantages of this method:

  • you can play different games and consoles (fortunately, the joysticks work in any Windows applications);
  • thanks to special filters can achieve high-quality images on almost any screen;
  • the ability to create video recordings of games, make saves, screenshots, etc.

Minuses:

  • poor performance (compatibility) with some games;
  • to play the console, you need a computer "free" from work;
  • "extra" wires, "hassle", setup time compared to a physical set-top box ...

Add-ons are welcome!

Good luck!
