A computer without a hard drive: is it possible to work with it and how to start Windows

User question

Hello.

Tell me if it is possible to somehow start Windows if I now have a computer without a hard drive (temporarily).

It's just that the old one broke, and they promised to bring the new one exactly in a week ... (it's good that there is a phone, it's not so boring )

Hello.

I also do not have a hard disk есть (there is an SSD), and once I brought the assembly without it too ... In general, I understood your task, just in the form in which you originally sent the question - it could be interpreted like that .. ...

Now, no kidding, let's move on to solving the issue. 👇

Is it possible to work on a computer / laptop without a disk (HDD / SSD)

You can (if it works)!

But you will need to prepare specials yourself. a bootable USB flash drive, or use 👉 LiveCD (+ in some cases you will need another blank flash drive, no less than 40 GB).

Of course, if you have not prepared such flash drives ahead of time, then you will need a working Windows PC (ask a neighbor / friend / colleague ...).

Now let's consider a couple of options for the "development of events" ...

👉 Option 1

You can install a full-fledged Windows 10 OS on a USB flash drive (prerequisite: your USB port and flash drive must support USB 3.0; the size of the flash drive is at least 32-40 GB).

Another illustrative example: USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 (note the color, for 3.0 it is blue)

How it's done:

  1. download a clean image from Windows 10;
  2. install the Dism ++ utility and run the recovery procedure;

    Recover OS from ISO image (Dism ++)

  3. then we indicate the installation ISO, a USB flash drive (the size of which is 32 + GB - it is on it that we will install Windows) and click "OK" (example below 👇).

    Settings in Dism ++ before writing an image to a USB flash drive

  4. then we wait for the ISO to be extracted to the USB flash drive, after we reboot the PC / laptop, go into the BIOS and boot from this flash drive (Windows will be installed on this flash drive and it will be possible to work on it as in a regular OS 👌) ...

Disadvantage of this method: full-fledged Windows is very "clumsy" when installed on a USB flash drive. For example, one system boot from USB 3.0 takes 3-5 minutes. (after the SSD with its 10 sec. is a test!).

👉 Option 2

Most users (most likely) do not need a full-fledged OS for temporary use. And therefore, in order to make working with a PC more comfortable and faster, it is better to use specials. prepared by 👉 LiveCD (I recommend the assembly from Sergey Strelts).

Having prepared such an emergency USB flash drive once, you can boot from it and work in Windows at any time (see the screenshot below). In her arsenal there are all the most necessary programs: a browser, office editors, utilities for working with a disk, etc.
