"ERR SSL VERSION OR CIPHER MISMATCH" - an error appears when trying to open the site

Good day!

The error indicated in the title of the article is rather "insidious" and ambiguous (it appears both in Chrome and in any other browser 👇), it can be annoying with its frequency ...

In general, if "translated into simple language" - by showing it, the browser wants to tell us that the site is suspicious and may not be safe. However, this is far from always the case, and you can see it even when trying to switch to a completely white and normal resource!

Of course, I will provide some universal tips for solving such a problem in this article. In most cases, it's about some "little thing" ... 👌

ERR SSL VERSION OR CIPHER MISMATCH - error example

What can be advised to eliminate the error

The first advice is trivial: restart your computer and check how sites open in a different browser. In rare cases, an error may occur due to an unstable Internet connection (👉How to check it).

*

👉 Check date, time, time zone

Perhaps, because of the incorrect time, this error occurs most often (for example, due to certain settings - Windows may synchronize the time incorrectly, and as a result - this error appears).

To fine-tune all the parameters related to time - press the combination Win + R (the Run window will open) and use the timedate.cpl command.

timedate.cpl - time setting

In the settings window that opens, double-check all the items (if necessary, manually set the region and disable synchronization).

👉 Disable antivirus and ad blocker extensions, VPN

Pay attention to plugins, extensions and programs that are used to block ads and protect your computer from viruses. It is not uncommon when Adguard or Adblock extensions are found to be "culprits" of a similar problem ...

The recommendation is simple: disable them for the duration of the diagnosis. As a rule, it is enough just to click on their icon in the browser taskbar (👇).

The same applies to the classic antivirus.

👉 Internet properties (are SSL, TLS enabled)

To open a tab "internet properties" and check the parameters we need - you need to click on Win + R, and enter the commandinetcpl.cpl (as in the screenshot below 👇).

inetcpl.cpl - open internet properties

Further in the tab "Additionally" check if you have a checkmark next to the items I have highlighted 👇 (SSL / TLS). Then go to the tab "Content" .

Internet Properties / Advanced Tab

It needs clear SSL (press the button 👇 shown in the screenshot). Next, restart your browser and check if it works.

👉 Check browser settings, clear cache

By the way, Google Chrome (Yandex browser) has a number of "own" parameters that are responsible for TLS. In Chrome, to check them, you need to insert into the address bar: chrome: // flags and press Enter (👇).

Next, in the search bar, type "TLS", and check that the parameters are set to the mode "Default" (i.e. the default).

Checking Chrome Settings

Apart from that, I also recommend clearing your browser cache. The easiest and fastest way to do this is to press the combination Ctrl + Shift + Del , in the window that opens, select the range "All the time" and click on the button "Delete" (👇).

👉 Reset browser settings

If the error appears exclusively in one browser, it makes sense to reinstall it (or reset its settings to default).

True, an important point: when removing an old "problematic" program, you need to completely "clean up" all its possible "residual" files (for this it is better to use special software 👇).

As for resetting the settings - then, for example, in the same Chrome, you just need to go to the settings window ( chrome: // settings / reset ), open the tab "Additional" , and scroll it to the very bottom (see the screen below 👇).

👉 Check your system for viruses and malware

Even if you have a modern antivirus installed and it does not find anything, this does not mean that the system is "clean" ... Various adware and malware are often not detected by classic antiviruses at all. And to "get rid" of this infection - you need to спец use special. BY.

I had a note on this topic on my blog, and in order not to repeat myself here, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with it (👇).

👉 Update the system

1) If you are using an old OS (Windows XP, Vista, etc.), I would advise you to consider replacing it with Windows 7/10 (note: how to install Windows 10).

*

2) When using modern Windows 10 - try to check if new ones came out for it updates .

To do this, go to system parameters (combination Win + i) and go to the section Windows Update .

👉 A couple of tips on how to try to open a problem site

First try in the address bar of your browserhttps replaced by http (many sites open this way and that).

https -> http

If this does not work, you can use web archives (these are resources that save copies of the pages of many sites on the network). Of course, there will not be the newest version of the site, but you can still find some information ...

In addition, I will also recommend one of my previous posts, which describes a couple more ways (for example, through the Google cache).
