How to configure the laptop to work when the lid is closed (for example, so that it continues to work or goes into hibernation)

Good day!

In some cases, it is required that the laptop (when the lid is closed) does not go to sleep (as is the case by default), but continues to work (for example). This is very convenient, say, when connecting an external monitor.

For such a fine tuning - we need to change the settings a little power supply ... And judging by several. Recently, not everyone can find this cherished option right away (and some have just "empty" lines there and cannot change anything in the usual way).

Well, I will consider below what can be done in certain cases. 👌

Choosing the action of the laptop when closing the lid

Settings

And so, first we need to open the settings power supply Windows. This can be done in several ways:

  1. use keyboard shortcutWIN + R, in the appeared window "Run" enter commandpowercfg.cpl and press Enter (this is a universal method for any * versions of Windows);

    powercfg.cpl - open power settings

  2. go 👉 to the Windows control panel and go to the section "Hardware and Sound / Power" ;
  3. in Windows 10 you can open the menu START / parameters , go to section System / Power and Sleep and open additional. settings (👇).

Furtheropen the link in the side menu "Action when closing the lid" ( Power Button Actions - if the first is not there).

Hardware and Sound - Power

Please note that you can set the laptop to work on the mains and on the battery separately:

  • when closing the lid;
  • when you press the sleep button;
  • when the power button is pressed.

Setting up the power buttons

After changing these parameters, I recommend restarting the laptop and only then checking the operation of the device ... 👀

Can the above power options be changed via the command line

It is possible, and it is very useful if something does not work for you through the control panel (👆).

However, I cannot help but note that in some versions of Windows 10, the method I suggested below does not work. However, trying is not torture ... 👌

What to do:

1) run 👉 the command line as an administrator;

2) enter one of the two commands below and press Enter.

On battery:

powercfg -setdcvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT 4f971e89-eebd-4455-a8de-9e59040e7347 5ca83367-6e45-459f-a27b-476b1d01c936 Action

From the network:

powercfg -setacvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT 4f971e89-eebd-4455-a8de-9e59040e7347 5ca83367-6e45-459f-a27b-476b1d01c936 Action

Instead "Act" you need to put a certain number:

  • 0 - means that "No action is required";
  • 1 - activate the "Sleep" mode when closing the lid;
  • 2 - "Hibernation";
  • 3 - "Completion of work".

Usage example

To save the parameters, at the end type the command powercfg -SetActive SCHEME_CURRENT and press Enter.

Important: Remember to reboot your device before testing.

What to do if you cannot change the above parameters in the power settings

This can happen for various reasons: for some, for example, just some of the lines are not active, or it is simply impossible to select anything other than "emptiness" ...

What I recommend:

  1. first, try to configure these parameters through the command line (and then double-check not the power supply parameters, but directly the operation of the laptop itself);
  2. check if you are "sitting" under an administrator account (if not, try to log in and configure the power supply under it);
  3. pay attention to the drivers: 👉 are they updated, are the drivers from the manufacturer of your laptop (many people forget to update them after reinstalling Windows 10);
  4. if you don't have an item "Hibernation" - it is possible that it is disabled in the system settings.Recheck this point if you need this mode;
  5. check if you have any restrictions in the spec. control center laptop power supply (note: such centers are found in some manufacturers: Lenovo, Sony, etc. They are usually installed together with drivers!).

That's all for this sim, success!
