Slows down video when editing in video editors. Is there anything you can do?

User question

Hello.

Tell me what's the matter: when I edit my home video (I transfer the recording from the phone to the Movavi track) - the computer lags and slows down wildly.

It is better not to launch the video preview window (in a reduced video) at all - half of it is not visible there, due to the fact that everything twitches during playback. Somehow I processed a couple of videos, but this is no longer possible. Is there anything you can do?

Hello.

In general, a typical question (only the author did not indicate what kind of hardware and video quality he had - perhaps there would be nothing to advise ...).

Anyway, below are general recommendations (which I sent to him), which you need to immediately pay attention to ... 👌

If editing video with lags: a few recommendations

👉 Tip 1: glands for video processing

I will not be original, but first try to evaluate your hardware. In most cases, the problem is precisely in the "weak" configuration of the system (however, in some cases it is possible to "slightly" upgrade the PC and the result will be much better).

Especially:

  • disk: it is highly desirable to place both video and project files, and the video editor itself on a fast SSD drive (the difference between SSD and HDD is very significant);
  • RAM: in my humble opinion, today is the minimum for relatively-norms. work 8 GB! For editing, of course, more is better (how to see what kind of RAM is on a PC);
  • CPU: the main component that performs most of the operations in video processing (directly the same editing and video preview in reduced resolution - rendered on the CPU). Of course, an 8-core CPU (as a rule) will show much better results than a 2-core ... (although this comparison is not entirely correct);
  • Video card: it is highly desirable that it supports hardware compression in h264 and HEVC (this is used at the stage of saving the finished video). All modern video cards (even built-in Intel) today have this (if you have an old card - check this moment ...).

👉 Tip 2: format and codec

Very much the "behavior" of your editor will also depend on:

  • the format of the added video and the codec with which it was compressed (we are talking about the video that you add to the editor for editing. For example, MP4, FLV, MOV, etc.);
  • video quality (resolutions: HD, 4k, etc .; bit rate).

In order not to "go" into the intricacies here, I would advise you to try working with videos of different formats in your video editor (for example, if you have MP4 and because of it the editor slows down - try to convert it to MOV, MPEG2, VOB, etc., and then work with them (without the MP4 file)).

👉 Tip 3: choosing a video editor

I think that most users know that all applications are written according to different algorithms (using excellent software solutions).

And, of course, each program (including the video editor) has different system requirements for the hardware (i.e., they can behave completely differently when editing video).

From my experience, I can recommend trying the following editors:

  1. 👉 Bolide Movie Creator - it has fairly low system requirements. At the same time, the editor allows you to perform all the most common actions for video processing;
  2. 👉 Video Editing - this program works well with the MP4 format, it is quite light and fast, plus it has a step-by-step interface (which is good for novice users);
  3. 👉 VidePad is a free video editor that perfectly copes with FLV, MP4, MOV formats.There are not many different effects and transitions in it, but everything basic and basic is definitely there!

👉 Tip 4: software settings

In the settings of your video editor (the program in which you work with video) - be sure to check a number of parameters:

  • whether OpenLG is involved;
  • whether hardware acceleration from Intel, NVIDIA, AMD is enabled (note: depending on your hardware);
  • check if the temporary files are located in the folder on the SSD drive (if you are using it);
  • whether optimization for HD is enabled (optional).

Of course, you may not have anything from the above in the settings ... But, if there is, be sure to try to "twist" these parameters. 👌
