Virtual Windows XP / 7/10 without downloading specials. software (configuring built-in Hyper-V in Windows 10)

Good day!

It turns out that some educational institutions still use Windows XP and do laboratory work on them 👀. Actually, for this very reason - some friends asked me to somehow run the old software in the new Windows 10 ...

As a solution: I decided to install them a virtual machine with Windows XP, on which the labs will "work" (fortunately, Windows 10 has a built-in Hyper-V hypervisor, which means you don't need to download anything in addition!). And it's quite simple to use it ... 👌

In general, below I will show with a step-by-step example how you can create a virtual "Windows" for yourself, and use it as a normal program (running in a window).

Perhaps this will save someone from buying an old laptop / PC for study (or to run old games 😉).

*

Note: everything described below can be done on Windows 10! For norms. Hyper-V requires at least 6 GB of RAM and a 64-bit processor (with hardware virtualization). In general, it is now supported by all modern CPUs ...

What we get in the end - virtual Windows XP launched in Windows 10 (hardware virtualization in Windows 10)

Creating a virtual "Windows"

STEP 1: enable the Hyper-V component, and launch the manager

And so, first you need to open a special. tab in windows "Enable or Disable Components" .

To do this, you can click Win + R, and use the commandoptionalfeatures (or go to the Windows Windows control panel and open the section "Programs" , see the screen below 👇).

In it we you need to put a tick in front of the item "Hyper-V" and click OK.

How to install Hyper-V

Next, agree to restart the computer and pre-install the components.

Reboot now

After restarting the computer - just type in the search "Hyper-V" and run "Hyper-V manager" ... He is what we need! 👌

Running Hyper-V

STEP 2: create a virtual machine (VM)

After the first launch of the Hyper-V manager, you should not have any virtual machines (hereinafter simply "VM").

To create a VM - pay attention to the tab "Actions" (in the column on the right 👇). Click on the button "Create" as in my screenshot.

Hyper-V Manager - Create

Next, you need to come up with a name for the VM. Anyone can be used.

Provide name and location

If you want to create a "virtual Windows XP" (ie old OS) - choose the first generation. 👇

For "virtual Windows 10" - choose second generation.

Specify generation

Then you need to specify the amount of allocated RAM. I recommend at least 2000 MB (for "virtual Windows 10" - 4000 MB).

Allocate memory

As for setting up the network, you can skip it for now at this stage.

Network configuration

I advise you to immediately create a virtual hard disk (it will store your virtual OS, all its files, etc.). In my example, I took 15 GB (usually more is required, and it is better to specify at least 30-45 GB).

Connect virtual hard disk

The next step is important: here you need to specify the location of the ISO image with the Windows OS that you want to install on the VM (that is, this OS version will become "virtual" for you).

In my example, I use the image ISO with Windows XP.

Well, the last step is the usual summary, you can immediately click on "Done" ... The VM has been created!

STEP 3: installing Windows on the VM

Now the created VM can be started - to do this, just right-click on it and select from the menu "To plug..." . 👇

Connect VM

Then click on the button "START" .

Start, launch the VM

Because in the previous step we have specified an ISO installation image with Windows XP - its installation on the virtual machine will start automatically!

Becausewhen creating a VM, we specified an ISO file - then the installation began automatically

As a rule, it is enough to press the Enter button several times and wait until the virtual disk is formatted and the files are copied.

Disk selection, formatting, and copying boot files

Next, a very mundane OS installation process will begin. Several times you will have to distract yourself and indicate the name, time zone, etc.

Installing and copying files

After a while Windows will be installed and the first boot will take place ... 👇

OS launch

Now we have a "virtual Windows XP" and we can fully work with it. 👌

STEP 4: using the VM

Using a VM is extremely simple. After starting the dispatcher, just right-click on the desired VM and select "To plug" (as we did when installing the OS in the previous step).

We connect the VM and work

After that, virtual Windows will be launched in a separate window (like other programs), and it will be possible to work in it as in a regular system - the START button, files on disk, games, etc. are also available. 👇

Can play

Important: to exit the virtual machine application window - press the combination Ctrl + Alt + ←.

How to copy files to a VM disk

Quite a popular question about the exchange of files with a virtual OS (after all, it is impossible to do this through editing / copying ...).

Here's the simplest way: first you need to turn off the VM.

State - off

Next, open 👉 disk management, click on the menu Action / Attach VHD and specify its location (by default: C: \ Users \ Public \ Documents \ Hyper-V \ Virtual hard disks).

Attach virtual disk

As a result virtual disk (on which "virtual Windows" is installed) will be displayed in "On my computer" and it will be possible to work with it as with a regular HDD. Those. copy and transfer any files to it (from it).

Can work with discs

After exchanging files with a virtual disk, do not forget to disable it: to do this, in disk management, right-click on it and select from the menu "Detach virtual hard disk" .

Detach virtual disk

Generally, that's all ...

The Hyper-V component is a pretty good replacement for standalone programs like VirtualBox (which I talked about in this post).

However, sometimes virtual machines do not allow you to run certain old software, and for it to work you have to install a "real OS" on a real old laptop (for example) ...

Add-ons are always welcome!

Success to everyone!
