Restoring the FoxPro database "without dancing with a tambourine"

Good day!

Those who administer databases using programs such as Microsoft FoxPro, 1C, dBase do not need to be told about the structure of files in * .DBF format ... 😉

In the databases, there are less, but there are more important areas, damage to which is best avoided by all means due to the high risks and losses for the company.

When I was faced with the need to quickly restore a damaged database, unfortunately, I did not immediately find a solution. After going through several options, I settled on one universal program ... (which will be discussed in the article).

So...

*

What can be done if something is wrong with the database

👉 STEP 1

If you are working with Microsoft FoxPro, I advise you to check if there are older versions of the database that you can open?

By the way, if you have Windows 10, it is possible that the File history option is enabled and it saved the base ... This function was transferred to Windows from Mac OS. To check the recoverability, do the following:

  1. Open the folder where the database is stored in *.DBF format; 👇
  2. Right click on *.DBF file and selectProperties (Properties);
  3. Select a tabPrevious versions (Previous versions)
  4. Click on the buttonRestore (Restore);
  5. Open the file in a program that uses the specified *.DBF file.

No previous versions found

Basically, this is something like an automatic backup (which, of course, should have been configured by other means ...).

Alternatively, you can even "hands" easily copy the required * .DBF file to any safe place. In general, a backup, whether automatic or carefully prepared by hand, is the best way to deal with database corruption. 😉

*

👉 STEP 2 (Built-in dBase Recovery)

Those who work with dBase can try the recovery method suggested by the developer. The rest of the methods require more serious technical skills.

  1. Open the dBase command prompt from the Windows Start menu;
  2. You then need to log into the dBase program using your username and password;
  3. Enter the following command on the line:dbf / recover sampleDB.dbf *
  4. Press Enter and wait until the end of the work.

*

👉 STEP 3 (using Recovery Toolbox)

* .DBF can be used by many programs, and each of them has its own recovery tools. I will not describe each of the methods here, since there can be many differences ...

It was more interesting to find a universal tool for recovering damaged * DBF files. 😉

What I liked working with the program Recovery Toolbox for DBF?

Firstly, if you are not an expert, then the program does not require you to know the structure of databases. All you need to do is select the file you want.

Secondly, you can try it for free, the demo version is available for download at the official. Recovery Toolbox website. And with it, open any database in * .DBF format. The solution is free anyway, so why look further?

The program works well on any computer, the main thing is that Windows is installed on it.

Recovery Toolbox for DBF - main program window

How to recover a DBF file - step by step algorithm of actions:

  1. You need to download the program from the official. site: //dbf.recoverytoolbox.com/ru/;
  2. Next, you need to install and run it;
  3. After that, you should select the source file in *.DBF format for analysis;
  4. Then press the buttonAnalyze (Analyze) to start the utility;
  5. After some time, it will be possible to view the results of the database analysis;
  6. Then select the file name and format for saving the data;
  7. Well, all that remains is to save the data to a new DBF file (this feature is available in the full version of the program).

An example of recovered data!

Basically, it does not matter at all in which program the database in * .DBF was created. It can be dBase IV, 1C or FoxPro, Recovery Toolbox for DBF automatically detects the required recovery algorithm and uses it.

About privacy

Many people are seriously concerned about data security, especially when it comes to databases.

In general, there is nothing to worry about when using such software. Recovery Toolbox for DBF, for example, works on any computer, including those that have no Internet access at all (no network connection is required to analyze * .DBF files!).

It is quite possible to copy the installation file using a flash drive to the desired computer, install the program and get to work ...

Important!

I still advise you to first make a copy of the damaged database and test various recovery methods on it, including Recovery Toolbox for DBF.

Despite the fact that the program does not change the contents of the original file during operation, you should not risk the database ...

How can you save

Option 1

If you just need to look at the contents of the database, then Recovery Toolbox for DBF is exactly what you need. The program has built-in viewers that are independent of the original database program.

By the way!

The original program (such as dBase or FoxPro) does not need to be installed on your computer.

Viewing, restoring and saving data is performed using Recovery Toolbox for DBF. You can take a piece of paper and write down the most important thing that is required right now (or just cut pictures (screenshots)). 👌

Option 2

In addition to working offline, you can restore databases *.DBF online. This does not require additional software to be installed on your computer. Anyway, you can do this from any mobile device, Android or iOS.

The service works as follows:

  1. First you need to open the link: //dbf.recoverytoolbox.com/online/ru/;
  2. Download a database file in * .DBF format for analysis and recovery;
  3. Provide email address and CAPTCHA code;
  4. Go to the next stage and pay for the restoration service;
  5. Download the recovered file. 👌

The form

The most important thing - have a good Internet connection in order to upload and then download a relatively large amount of data.

Yes, third party PCs are assumed. But at the same time, it is cheaper than buying a license for Recovery Toolbox for DBF.

It is also worth noting that the recovery service does not store your downloaded data (and recovered files) - all information is deleted 30 days after the download (it doesn't matter if the service was paid for or not).

Add-ons on the topic are always welcome!

Good luck!
