What to do if there is no sound on YouTube

User question

Hello.

Please help with the YouTube service - no matter what video you watch on this service, it is without sound. I have already tried to reboot the laptop, turned on recovery (Acer laptop), checked for viruses. Unsuccessfully ... What else could be the matter?

Good day!

Well, first, you need to make sure that there is sound at all: is there sound when playing audio and video files located on your hard drive, is there sound when playing multimedia files on other resources?

If there is, it's not bad anymore, and you can go on to figure it out (in fact, what this article will be about 👌).

For those who have sound on their computernotat all (ie PC / laptop is dumb, like a fish), I recommend that you read this article.

Sound restoration in 7 steps

👉 STEP 1: recheck multiple videos

Perhaps the first thing I would recommend doing is to open a few more videos. It so happens that the problem is related only to a specific video (besides, 2-3% of videos on YouTube go either without sound or with very poor soundtrack!).

In addition, as mentioned above, check if you have sound when playing videos on other resources (VK, for example).

*

👉 STEP 2: check browser extensions (remove Rutube)

Next, I recommend opening the installed extensions and add-ons in the browser.

For example, I have noticed more than once how Adblock (this is an extension for blocking ads) worked incorrectly, blocking not only ads, but also the playback of the online video itself. The same goes for the extension. Rutube (where does it come from on people's PCs, I, frankly, still haven't unearthed it ...).

For example, to view extensions in Google Chrome, you need to open the page chrome: // extensions / (or settings / additional tools / extensions).

Further, for the duration of the check, I recommend removing all extensions that you are not familiar with (and those that can block the content of pages: Adblock, extensions from antiviruses, etc.).

👉 STEP 3: Setting up the audio driver

More often than not, if there is a problem with the audio drivers, there is no sound on the computer at all. However, it happens in different ways, in some drivers there may be various filters and additional. settings for adjusting the sound in various programs (for example, you can mute the sound in browsers).

To begin with, I recommend that you generally see if there is an audio driver. You can do this in 👉 Device Manager (to launch it, press the Win + Pause button combination and you will see a link on the left).

In Device Manager, notice two tabs: "Sound, game and video devices" and "Other devices" ... Your sound card should be listed in sound devices, there should not be any devices marked with a yellow exclamation mark! If they are, then you do not have a part of the drivers.

How to install the driver for sound. Search for audio drivers (for example, Realtek).

To configure audio drivers, go to the Windows Control Panel in the section "Hardware and Sound" (if there are drivers, there should be a link to their control center. Also pay attention to the tray, next to the clock there is also an icon for quick launch).

👉 To help!

No badge from Realtek HD Manager! How to enter the Realtek control panel, otherwise I can not configure the sound in any way.

In the drivers, pay attention to the speaker configuration, sound sources, volume level, filters. It is not possible to give specific recommendations for each case, but nevertheless - I will give a couple of examples below where to look for the background ...

Speaker Configuration: Switch "5.1 Speaker" to Stereo to get sound!

👉 STEP 4: adjusting the volume through the mixer (for each program separately)

Windows has a volume mixer that lets you adjust the sound volume for each program separately. Those. you can, for example, turn down the sound volume in the browser to zero (while in other programs set it to 100%!).

To open the volume mixer, just right-click on the sound icon in the tray, and select it in the menu that appears (an example is presented below).

If the volume icon does not respond or disappears altogether, then check out this

Open volume mixer

Next, pay attention to the sound volume level in your browser (for example, in the screenshot below, the sound in Firefox was simply turned off! This is the whole problem ...).

Therefore, there was no sound - it was just turned off

👉 STEP 5: check and update Adobe Flash Player

Most of the videos on the Internet are tied to the Adobe Flash Player (flash player). In some cases, it may not work correctly (10 years ago, on Windows XP, I encountered a problem on several machines: after updating the flash player, some of the videos were no longer displayed - I had to roll back the system and use the old version of the flash player).

Note: YouTube currently uses html5 in some videos - but more on that below ...

Therefore, I think it is worth trying to update the flash player (and if the latest version is available, try installing an older one for verification). I have a separate article on how to do this on my blog, I recommend it.

👉 STEP 6: Trying to disable Html5

Update (12.2019): Flash Player will end in December 2020, which means this tip is no longer valid ...

Html5 is intended to replace Flash Player, it is safer, faster, and in general it has some advantages in theory. Meanwhile, in practice, we often get freezes, slowdowns, incompatibility, etc. And some of the videos on YouTube are laid out in html5 (you may have come across just such a video).

Check page that you are using: //www.youtube.com/html5

Currently html5 is used

To disable it, you need to install a special browser extension - "Disable Youtube HTML5 Player" (there are similar extensions for other browsers).

👉 STEP 7: clearing the browser cache

Well, the last thing I would recommend is to clear the browser cache (the entire history of visits to various pages). Often, when the browser "glitches", the cache is often to blame: when the browser downloads part of the data from the network, and takes part from the cache, errors often occur ...

To clear the cache (history) in most browsers, the button combination is used Ctrl + Shift + Del ... The window for clearing history in Chrome is shown in the screenshot below - it remains to click the button "Delete data" ...

As another additional option, try using a different browser. I gave the best of them in this article ->

Add-ons are welcome ...

Good luck!
