How to disable the touchpad on a laptop (random clicks are triggered when I work with a laptop with a mouse)

User question

Hello.

Help with the touchpad. The fact is that I work with a laptop with a mouse, and in principle I don't need a touchpad. When I am typing or doing something at the keyboard, I often accidentally touch the touchpad with the surface of my palm and pressings are triggered (for example, text can be highlighted, the cursor can jump, etc.).

How can I turn it off? On my laptop there is no special key on the keyboard, there is nothing in the mouse settings either. Sob sob...

Good day!

Yes, such a problem can be annoying. In this article I will try to give several working methods that will help solve your problem (by the way, I suspect that you do not have drivers installed on the touchpad - therefore there is nothing in the mouse settings) ...

Ways to disable the touchpad

Method number 1: special function key

Many laptops have a dedicated function key that allows you to quickly enable / disable the touchpad (it has a distinctive icon on it).

I will list the main brands of laptops and give the most common way to disable the touchpad:

  1. ASUS: Usually this is a combination of Fn + F9 (or Fn + F7). See the photo below (👇);
  2. Acer: Fn + F7 (or in the properties of the mouse);
  3. Dell: most often the sensor is disabled in the properties of the mouse;
  4. MSI: Fn + F3 combination;
  5. Lenovo: Fn + F5 or Fn + F8
  6. HP: Note that on HP notebooks, double-tap on the upper left corner of the touchpad to disable it (see photo below).
  7. Sony: Fn + F1 combination (this brand's laptops also have their own Control Center, which also has a similar option);
  8. Samsung: in the vast majority of laptops Fn + F5;
  9. Toshiba: most often a combination of Fn + F5 (also, laptops of this brand have an option to disable the sensor in the properties of the mouse).

Warning about alternative touchpad disable button

If the function key is triggered, usually, a notification always appears on the screen that the sensor has been disabled (see the screenshot below).

Method number 2: using the properties of the mouse

If there is no function key, then almost certainly the option to disable the touchpad should be in the mouse settings (or in special software, such as from Sony, Dell).

Open 👉 Windows Control Panel, section "Hardware and Sound / Devices and Printers / Mouse" .

Opening Mouse Properties / Windows Control Panel

Further, if you have installed drivers, the parameters should contain either a link to the control panel of your mouse, or the necessary options right in this window. For example, drivers for Synaptics touchpads allow you to put a very convenient checkbox right in this window:

  • Disable internal pointing device when connecting external pointing device to USB.

Those. as soon as you connect the mouse to the USB port, your touchpad will stop working. Very comfortably!

Properties - Mouse

Addition!

By the way, please note that in some laptops, the touchpad is disabled in Windows Mobility Center .

To open the Mobility Center, press the Win + X key combination (in Windows 10, you will see a menu with the desired link).

Important!

If you do not have a function key, there is no special. There are no software (some kind of Control Center) and in the properties of the mouse there are no parameters for the touchpad, most likely, you simply do not have drivers installed on the touchpad.

I recommend checking and updating the drivers, the best utilities for this are here: //ocomp.info/update-drivers.html

Or, use the methods below.

Method number 3: for Windows 10 - we use the parameters of touch devices

If you have Windows 10, then there are special options in the parameters. the section responsible for the operation of the touch device.

To open these settings, go to START and click on the button "Parameters" (you can also use the combination Win + i).

Windows 10 settings

Then go to the section "Devices / Touchpad" ... Here you can disable it completely, or partially (for example, disable the touchpad when connecting a mouse). In addition, you can adjust the speed of the cursor and touch. See screenshot below. 👇

Method number 4: disable the touchpad in the device manager

Many devices (including the touchpad) can be disabled via 👉 Device Manager.

The easiest way to open it (in Windows 7 ÷ 10): go to 👉 control panel, and add the word to the search bar "Dispatcher" ... The search results will contain a link to launch it (see the screen below 👇).

Open the device manager by searching in the control panel

In Device Manager, expand the tab "Mice and other pointing devices" ... One of the pointing devices is the touchpad. If it is difficult (impossible) to navigate by the name, then turn off each of them one by one until you find the one you need.

Disable Device / Device Manager

*

Method number 5: manual option - put a piece of cardboard / paper

Well, the last option is to cut a piece of thick paper (made of cardboard, for example) to fit the touchpad and glue this area with it (without glue! It is enough to carefully pick it up with tape).

The method, although clumsy, will avoid accidental clicks when touching the palms. 😉

Add-ons are welcome ...

That's all, good luck to everyone!
