The internet is working and the browser is not loading pages. What to do?

User question

Hello.

Tell me why the browser may not load web pages when the Internet is working?

The connection icon is active (in the tray), Skype is working, the torrent is downloading, and Chrome does not open anything (I even checked large sites like VK, OK, Yandex, etc.).

Hello.

And to you and everyone else who has a similar problem, I would first recommend launching several browsers (Chrome, Edge, etc.) and trying to open different pages of sites in each of them.

In addition, if you have a Wi-Fi router at home, and several devices access the network through it: try opening web pages on a laptop, smartphone, tablet, etc. (such actions will greatly help to facilitate the search for the cause ...).

And now, more to the point ...

What to do if the browser won't load web pages

👉 First recommendations

If the pages do not open on any of the devices and in any browser, it is quite possible that there was channel break your ISP (or the router / router settings are out of order).

Try restarting the router and PC / laptop, and then check the network functionality again.

👉 Remark!

How to connect and configure a router yourself (from scratch)

Also, it will not be superfluous to check with the provider if they have a break, if everything is in order and working.

By the way, pay attention to the network connection icon: is there a red cross on it (example below 👇).

No connections available

If a similar icon is lit, I recommend that you read these articles:

  1. The Internet does not work via a network cable (there is a "red" cross on the network icon)
  2. The laptop does not connect to Wi-Fi, writes: "not connected, no connections available"

Besides, try right clicking on the network icon and run diagnostics .

Windows 8/10 has a fairly good internal diagnostics built into it that can solve (or at least suggest) many causes of a malfunction.

Checking the settings (proxy) and plugins in the browser

The second thing I definitely recommend is to check the settings and add-ons in the browser (especially if other devices and other browsers open web pages).

It is about such pluginsthat can change IP address, scan network traffic, block ads, etc. (this refers to proxies, antivirus add-ons, and pay attention to the antiviruses themselves).

For example, in Chrome just go to the browser settings (page chrome: // settings / ), to uncover "Additional" , and find the section "System" .

Open proxy settings

Then check and disable all unnecessary extensions on the page chrome: // extensions / (by the way, I would temporarily recommend disabling all of them) and cancel the entered proxy settings. Restart your browser and try to reopen the pages.

Remove unneeded extension - Chrome

By the way, turn off your antivirus and firewall during testing. Often, when excessive concern for the user's safety turns into problems for him ...

Trying to change DNS in the network connection settings

Another very popular reason for this problem is the "fallen off" DNS ...

Typically, the ISP's DNS is used by default and no one changes it. However, if you register DNS from Google (for example), then your Internet work will be more stable (and possibly faster).

How to do it:

  1. press combination Win + R (to open the "Run" window), enter the command ncpa.cpl and click OK. Section 👉 of the control panel should open: "Network connections" ;
  2. in this section, open the properties of the adapter through which you connect to the Internet (example below 👇);

    Wireless connection properties

  3. then select a line "IP version 4 ..." and open its properties (example below);

    IP v4 properties

  4. switch the slider to manual DNS entry mode and write: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, as in the screenshot below 👇 (this is DNS from Google, but you can choose others). Save your settings and restart your computer.

    Use the following DNS addresses

  5. after the done operation, the browser should start displaying pages ...

Clearing DNS cache, resetting network parameters

To reset the network parameters, you need to open 👉 command line as administrator.

How to do it:

  • press a combination of buttons Ctrl + Shift + Esc (the task manager will open);
  • then select the item "File / start new task" ;
  • use command CMD;
  • check the box that the task must be on behalf of the administrator;
  • click OK. See example below. 👇

    Run command line (CMD) as admin

In the command line, you must enter several commands sequentially (after entering each, press Enter!):

  • ipconfig / flushdns
  • ipconfig / registerdns
  • ipconfig / renew
  • ipconfig / release

Then restart your PC / laptop and check if the browser is working ...

HOSTS file recovery, check Windows for virus and adware

In Windows, there is one system file (note: its name is hosts), by changing which, you can prohibit opening a particular site (moreover, for all browsers in the system at once). I will add that you can not only change, but also redirect the user from one resource to another ...

This file is often modified (for their own purposes) by viruses and adware. To restore it, I recommend using the antivirus utility. AVZ (it does not need to be installed, and can not only restore hosts, but also check your PC for viruses).

To restore system parameters in AVZ:

  • download and unpack the archive with the anti-virus utility (link to the official site);
  • from the file menu select "System Restore" (as in the screenshot below).

    System recovery with AVZ

  • then tick the boxes that you want to restore and clean: I recommend ticking the same items (at least), as in the screenshot below 👇. Then press the button "Run" .

    Restore HOST, IE settings, etc.

In addition to the above, it will not be superfluous to check the special computer. utilities that will help you remove malware that is invisible to classic antivirus software. You can find out how to do this in the article, the link to which is given below.
