How to check an SD card or USB flash drive: for operability, for errors, real volume, speed

Good day!

With various problems with SD cards and USB flash drives, it is often necessary to assess their performance, speed and other points in order to understand: this is a problem with some device or with this drive.

Also, a check is sometimes necessary to correct errors in the file system, arising, for example, due to incorrect work with the drive.

In general, this can be done with different utilities (fortunately, now there is plenty to choose from). In this small note, I want to offer my own several options that help with such questions.

I will notethat if you have lost some files from a flash drive or memory card, then first of all start by restoring them (I recommend this: //ocomp.info/kak-vosstanovit-foto-s-sd-karty.html), and only then proceed to check and repair them.

Checking SD cards / USB flash drives

Windows Tools: Checking and Fixing Errors

Allows you to quickly restore the performance of SD cards, USB flash drives, external hard drives and other storage devices in case of various failures and errors of the file system (for example, caused by incorrect operation of a number of programs, improper disconnection from USB, etc.).

And so how to do it.

STEP 1

First you need to open the This PC (My Computer) tab. To do this, you can simply press the combination Win + E, and select the link of the same name in the menu on the left. See screenshot below.

STEP 2

Next open properties desired disc / memory card (see example below).

SD card properties

STEP 3

Then go to the tab "Service" and run a disk check for errors.

Service - check

STEP 4

Then click on the button "check and repair disk" ... It may take some time to check (depending on the size and condition of the disk). Upon completion, you will see a report on the results (for example, no errors were found ...).

Alternative option

STEP 1

You need to run Command Prompt as administrator. To do this, you need to open the task manager (the combination of buttons Ctrl + Shift + Esc), press "File / new task" , enter the CMD command and press Enter (do not forget to check the box that the task is needed on behalf of the administrator, see the example below).

Run CMD (command line) as administrator

STEP 2

Next, you need to enter the command: chkdsk g: / f and press Enter (note: "g:" is the drive / flash drive letter that we want to check; "/ f" is the key that indicates the correction of errors (if they are found)).

Running a check (with error correction)

STEP 3

It remains to wait for the end of the check. A report on its results will be provided in the same window (example below).

Using H2test: for performance and real volume

Note. To work, we need the H2test utility (link to the official site, you can also download it there). The utility is free, does not need to be installed and works in almost all versions of Windows.

H2test allows you to check the real volume of a flash drive (not just from the properties that are displayed in the explorer - but how much you can actually write on it), and its speed. This check is especially recommended for new drives that came from Chinese online stores (where sometimes you come across not honest sellers selling 32 GB flash drives under the guise of 256 GB).

And so, to start checking you need:

  1. download and run the utility (it is better to translate the language into English (at least it's easier for me with it) )) ;
  2. select a disk to check (the "Select Target" );
  3. push the button "Write + Verify" and wait for the end of the check (see the screen below).

H2test: how to run a drive test

If something is wrong with the flash drive (SD card), you will see a red window (as in the screenshot below).Pay attention to the line that says how many sectors you have really working (for example, when I checked a flash drive for 100 GByte, it turned out that its actual working volume is only 14.8 GByte).

In general, if you see a "red" report, this is not good. If the product is new, ask for an exchange or refund. If this is difficult, then you can try to repair the drive: //ocomp.info/kak-uznat-realnyiy-obem-fleshki.html

H2testw (scan results): real read, write speed and real volume

If everything is in order with the drive being tested, you will see a "green" report (it will contain the phrase "Test finished without errors" - that is, the test was completed without errors).

By the way, Writing is a record; Verifying is reading (verifying if a sector is being revoked). By the way, under these phrases, there is also the speed of work: in my case, 11.9 and 74.1 MByte / s, respectively.

H2test (scan results of another drive): the test passed normally, no errors were found

Using the Flash Memory Toolkit: for errors and speed of work

Note! Flash Memory Toolkit is available on the official website. Allows you to perform all the most necessary actions with a flash drive / SD card: format, check for errors, recover files from it, test speed, etc.

Since the Flash Memory Toolkit utility is quite multifunctional, in this article I will show its capabilities only in solving the most popular questions.

1) And so, after you connected the USB flash drive (SD card) to the PC and launched the utility, in the first window ("Info") you can find out the size of the flash drive, the file system, how much space is occupied on it / how much is free (example below ).

Flash Memory Toolkit - utility main window

2) To start testing for errors: go to the section "Error Scan" , tick the test options (write, read), and click "Start" .

How to run an error test / Flash Memory Toolkit

Further, on the right side of the window, you will see the testing process: how many percent of the memory (of the total) was checked, and how many errors (Errors) were found. Ideally (if everything is OK with the flash drive) - they shouldn't be!

Testing process

3) If some files (photos, images, etc.) are missing from your flash drive, then some of them can be restored and the Flash Memory Toolkit allows you to do this.

To start scanning for deleted files, go to the "File Recovery" tab, and click the "Scan" button. After scanning: you will be presented with a list of found files, you need to select the necessary "checkboxes" and restore (note: you only need to restore files to another drive!).

Deleted file recovery function

4) To check the read / write speed of drives in the Flash Memory Toolkit there is a tab "Low-level Benchmark" ... To run a test: just open this tab and click the start button.

After a while, the program will provide you with the minimum, maximum and average access speed. In addition, all this will also be clearly presented in the graph (example below).

That's all for now (additions would be helpful ... )

Good luck!
