The brightness of the screen on a laptop is not adjusted, what should I do? How to adjust brightness

Good day!

The problem with adjusting brightness on laptops is fairly common. And you shouldn't "close your eyes" to it at all, tk. our vision directly depends on this (if the screen is, for example, too bright, the eyes will quickly get tired).

In this context, most often one has to face two problems:

  • brightness adjusts automatically and spontaneously - sometimes darker, sometimes lighter, depending on the lighting in the place where the laptop is (or on the contrast of the picture on the screen). How to solve this problem - described in this article;
  • brightness is not adjustable at all , it is always constant (even if you press special function keys).

In this article I want to focus on the second development of events and show what can be done.

So...

*

Ways to adjust brightness

For a start, in my opinion, it is worth trying different ways to adjust the brightness. Even if suddenly one of them does not work, this is not a reason not to try the other.

Finally, brightness control - this is a one-time procedure that does not need to be done so often, and if any of the options works, the problem can be considered solved ...

*

Option number 1

The easiest and fastest way to see what's with the battery and brightness is to click on the "battery" icon in the tray. Then appear in the menu in which you can add / subtract the current values (see the screenshot below 👇).

Option number 2

Most laptops have special function keys (they must have a characteristic icon) - if you press them (for example, Fn + F5 as in the example below) - then the brightness should change, and a slider appears on the screen (which can be adjusted with the mouse ...).

👉 Important!

If nothing happens when you press the function keys, I recommend using the recommendations from this article.

Option number 3

You can change the brightness, saturation, hues, colors, etc. picture parameters in the driver settings for the video card.

How to open graphics card settings: AMD, nVidia, Intel (can't find the graphics control panel)

*

To enter them, in most cases, just right-click on an empty space on the desktop, and select AMD (or IntelHD / nVidia) settings in the menu that appears.

For example, if you have an IntelHD video card (like me), then just in the context menu that appears, select Intel Graphics Settings .

Intel Graphics Settings

Then you need to open the section "Display / Color Settings" ... Then you can fine-tune the image quality on the screen (see the screen below 👇).

Option number 4

Windows also has power settings that allow you to set the brightness and set the operating time of the device depending on whether it is connected to the mains or to the battery.

To open such settings, you must:

  1. press the combination of buttons: Win + R
  2. enter the command: powercfg.cpl
  3. hit enter

powercfg.cpl - open power settings

Further in the current power supply scheme, you can move the brightness slider to the desired side (see the screenshot below 👇).

Option number 5

In Windows 10, you can customize the display through the control panel. To do this, open the menu: START / parameters / system / display (or press Win + R and use the command desk.cpl).

Next, you will have access to the scale and layout, screen resolution, brightness and other parameters (see the screen below 👇).

What to do if the brightness is not adjustable

👉 1) Update the drivers for the video adapter // roll back not old ones

In most cases, it is not possible to change the brightness due to the fact that there is no actual drivers for the video card.

This can happen if, for example, after installing or updating the system, you did not download them from the official website (as a result, you still have a driver that Windows itself installed - it is, of course, working, but some options are not available!).

Here you can proceed as follows:

  1. go to the official website of your device, download the driver for the video adapter, and update it. How to do this whole procedure - see this article;
  2. try to roll back the driver to the old one (which could remain in the system, for example, after updating it). I recommend trying this option first, and if there are no other versions in the system, then the first one, see the link just above (👆).

*

How to try to roll back the system to the "old" working driver:

  1. go to device Manager (to open it, press Win + R, enter the command devmgmt.msc and press Enter);
  2. then open the tab "Video adapters" , select your video card and right-click on it - select from the menu "Update driver" ;

    Device Manager - Update Driver

  3. then indicate that you want to search for drivers on this computer;

    Search for a driver on this PC

  4. then you will need to indicate that you want to select a driver yourself from the list;

    Select a driver from the list manually

  5. and in the end, you should see all the drivers (sorted by date and version) that are available for installation. Try a different version from the current one.

    Several driver versions available!

In the overwhelming majority of cases, after updating the driver to the video adapter, you can easily change the brightness using the Windows control panel (for example, through the power settings), or through the driver's control center, even in cases where other methods do not work!

*

👉 2) Check if the function keys work

Also, what I recommend doing is to check if the function keys on your keyboard work. It is possible that you have everything in order with the drivers, just, for example, these necessary keys are disabled in the BIOS.

You can find out how to configure and enable them from another article of mine on the blog (link to it below).

What to do if the function keys (F1-F12, as well as Fn) do not work, you cannot change the brightness, volume, turn on / off the touchpad or Wi-Fi adapter.

👉 3) Disable adaptive brightness control

Some laptops have special light sensors and by default they adjust the brightness of the screen depending on the lighting level in the room (called: adaptive dimming).

In most cases - this option does not provide an optimal level of picture quality on the screen and it is recommended to turn it off.

To do this, open 👉 the Windows Control Panel and go to the following section: Hardware and Sound \ Power Options \ Change circuit settings

Need to open additional settings your power supply scheme.

Change add. power options (Windows 10)

In the tab "Screen / Enable adaptive brightness control"- there will be a treasured setting. Just switch the modes to "Off" ... In some cases, you will need to restart your laptop.

Turn off adaptive screen brightness

By the way, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that some laptop models are equipped with additional settings centers (for example, Sony VAIO, Lenovo, etc.).

They may have some options that affect the quality of the picture on the screen (example below). Just go to a similar settings center and disable all options that are related to brightness and adaptability sensors ...

👉 4) Try to change the OS (or install a second one for testing)

Well, the last thing I can recommend for this problem is to try reinstalling the Windows OS (and the drivers along with it), or create another subsection on the hard disk and install a different OS version on it.

Immediately, I note that it is highly advisable to go to the official website of the manufacturer of your laptop before that, and see for which OS there are drivers.

👉 As help!

I recommend that you read the article on how to choose the right Windows OS for your laptop or PC.

We check on the official website of the laptop manufacturer for which Windows operating systems there are drivers

Add-ons are welcome ...

Good luck!
