How to use a phone as a microphone for a computer

Good day!

Probably, many have more than once faced one small "problem": you need to record something on a PC / laptop, but there is no microphone at hand (or, as an option, you can talk to someone over the network, for example, during a game .. .). To solve such a snag, it will be enough to use a mobile phone (on Android).

That is, using one "tricky" application, we kind of give the computer access to the phone's microphone. True, one should immediately make one "remark": for this we need to first connect the phone to a computer / laptop using a USB cable (or, alternatively, use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi).

In general, below I will show by my own example how this can be done easily and simply. So...

We use the phone as a microphone

STEP 1: install the app on your phone

The first thing to do is to install specials on your phone. WO Mic app. The link to Google Play is below. It just allows you to "share" the microphone in 1-2 clicks (that is, to give access to it).

Note: for now, do not pay attention to its interface (below will be a step-by-step analysis of where and what to enter ...).

STEP 2: driver installation and spec. PC / laptop software

Further, the same application must be installed on a computer / laptop. This can be done from the official website (link below). Please note that for this program to work, you need an additional. also install the driver (see screen).

STEP 3: enable USB debugging on your phone

Now that everything has been installed, you need to enable USB debugging mode on the phone (this action is necessary if you are going to connect the phone to a PC using a USB cable, otherwise see the alternative).

To enable debug mode, as a rule, it is enough to open the phone settings, go to the tab "System / For Developers" and move the corresponding slider.

Note: if you do not have a menu for developers, see the instructions for your device on how to turn it on. For example, on Huawei (Honor), to enable this menu, just go to the "About phone" section, and press 3-4 times on the line with the build number ...

STEP 4: set up and connect

Now, in general, there are only formalities 👌 ...

1) First, we connect the phone to the PC using a USB cable (by the way, allow the phone to exchange files from the PC if a similar menu appears after connecting).

2) Run the applicationWO Mic on your phone and go to its settings. In line "Transport" specify option "USB" , adjust the volume and check the box "Mute" ... Then exit them and start the application (▶ button in the top menu of the application). See the example below on the screenshot.

3) Next, run the program of the same name on your PC and open the menu "Connect" (as in the screenshot below).

Connect (PC software)

4) Then select the option "USB" and click OK.

USB connection

5) Ideally, if you did everything correctly (and turned on the debug mode), the "Connected" notification should appear. In general, from this moment you can use the microphone of the phone ...

Connection established

6) If the application informs you that the devices are connected, and you do not hear what you are saying (or the sound quality leaves much to be desired), I recommend going to the Windows control panel in the section "Hardware and Sound / Sound" .

Hardware and Sound - Sound

Next, open the "Recording" tab and see if the green check mark on the microphone is lit (note that it is marked as "WO Mic Device"). If not, then just select it and click on the button "Default" in the lower window.

Note: to fine-tune the microphone operation - use the "Properties" tab.

The microphone is working!

STEP 5: recording audio ...

By the way, to test the microphone, you can use the built-in application in Windows - "Voice recording" ... To find it, just click on the magnifying glass icon on the taskbar. See screenshot below.

However, you can use more specials. programs (about them in the article, the link to which is given below).

If debug mode was not enabled

If you failed to enable the phone debugging mode via USB (or there is no cable at hand), you can use an alternative option and connect the phone to a PC / laptop using Bluetooth or Wi-Fi (I will focus on the first option).

1) And so, the installation of the WO MIC application on the phone and PC will go the same way. Next, you need to enable Bluetooth on the phone. See example below.

Connecting Bluetooth devices (Android 9)

2) Then, in Windows in the tray, you need to click on the Bluetooth icon and add a new device.

Adding a Bluetooth device

3) As a rule, after that, the process of pairing devices will start. Sometimes, you need to enter the pin code that will be displayed on the phone screen in the Windows window.

Please note, if the devices have been paired, you will see a message about it. How it looks in Windows 10 is shown in the screenshot below.

The phone is paired with the computer

If the devices do not connect (or do not see each other), I recommend that you read one of my past articles, the link below.

4) Next, you need to run the WO Mic program on your computer, open the menu "Connect" , specify the option "Bluetooth" , select your device and click OK.

Bluetooth connection

5) Actually, if the connections were successful, the phone's microphone will work in the same way as if the devices were connected with a USB cable. You can fine-tune the microphone sensitivity in the section "Sound" Windows Control Panel.

That's all for now ...

Good luck!
