Wi-Fi is connected, but there is no Internet - it does not work! [pages in the browser do not open]

User question

Hello.

Tell me about one problem. I bought a new laptop, connected it to my home Wi-Fi network - the tray icon shows that Wi-Fi is connected, but the Internet does not work (pages in browsers do not open, online games do not connect, Skype does not load). What could be the problem?

PS

The phone and another old laptop work fine with this Wi-Fi network (there is internet)!

Good day!

In your case, it is obvious that the problem is almost certainly related to the Windows settings on the new laptop (unless, of course, there is no limitation on the number of connected devices in the router parameters, for example).

But in general, most often, users are faced with three options: when the problem is related to a laptop (under Windows) [as in your case]; with a smartphone / tablet (for Android); and with the settings of the router. 👀

Actually, according to this, I will divide this article into 3 parts (I think this will be the most convenient for reading). I think this article will help in solving most of the most popular causes of this problem.

And so, closer to the topic ... 👌

Wi-Fi is available, but there is no Internet: what to do

Option 1: laptop / PC side problem (Windows)

In general, according to statistics, I should note that most of the problems with the inaccessibility of the Internet (when connecting to a Wi-Fi network) are associated with the settings of the router. But if you have other devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network, can access the Internet [like the author of the question], then you should start by checking the Windows settings.

*

Approx. : except for those cases when a restriction on the number of connected devices can be set in the router settings (or there is a "white" list for specific MAC addresses (what is a MAC address)).

In this case, if the Windows setup did not give results, check the router settings (about them just below in the article).

👉 Invalid network adapter settings

Perhaps this is the first thing to start with. The fact is that often the previous settings remain in the network connection settings (which, for example, could have been set in the store). And because of this, when you connect to a Wi-Fi network, the Internet does not work ...

First, open the tab network connections (for this: press the combination Win + R, and in the window that appears "Run" enter the ncpa.cpl command).

ncpa.cpl - View all network connections

Next, open the properties of the wireless network (in English it can be called "Wireless").

Wireless network properties

Then find the line "IP version 4 (TCP / IPv4)" and open it properties (number-1 on the screenshot below 👇).

Next, set the options for obtaining the IP address and DNS server automatically (these settings will work for most routers!).

Obtaining automatically IP, DNS / Clickable

Save your settings and recheck network operation.

👉 Antivirus / firewall block

The second thing I would like to draw your attention to is antiviruses. Often, trying to secure your work on the Internet, they block access to many sites (or do not allow the browser to work at all until you manually allow this action.

For example, Norton Antivirus and Panda used to do this when setting max. protection level).

Disable Avast antivirus for 1 hour

Therefore, while setting up the network, I would recommend disabling the antivirus and firewall.

👉 Try running diagnostics

If you have Windows 10 installed, then it has a good network diagnostic tool in its arsenal. Often, it helps, if not to eliminate the problem, then at least indicates the cause of its occurrence.

To run diagnostics: just click on the network icon in the system tray with the right mouse button, in the menu that appears, select the option "Diagnose problems".

Troubleshooting

Then proceed according to the advice of the "wizard".

Windows Network Diagnostics

By the way, you can also open Windows Settings, the tab "Update and Security / Troubleshooting" , find in the list "Network adapter" and run the troubleshooter (see screenshot below).

👉 Try using DNS servers other than your ISP

It may happen that on your other devices (which have the Internet), excellent DNS servers from your provider are set in the settings.

As a result, they work, but specifically your new device does not. By the way, I note that the provider's DNS servers are often inferior to, for example, Yandex's or Google's DNS servers. Therefore, I recommend also trying to change them.

To do this, open the network connections, then the adapter properties (in the previous step, it is described in detail how to do this) and try using DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (as in the example below).

I would also recommend that you read another article, which indicates a number of reasons for the operation of a Wi-Fi network without access to the Internet.

Option 2: a problem on the side of the router (if there is no Internet on all devices connected to the Wi-Fi network)

If the Internet is not available on any of the devices connected to Wi-Fi, then it is almost certainly possible blame the router (at least first of all check its work). In general, router malfunctions, unfortunately, are not that uncommon.

If everything worked for you in normal mode before (normal), then first, try reboot router ... Often a router under heavy load may "freeze" or reboot, and "forgets" to create a new connection ...

👉 Are the Internet access parameters lost (and is the router configured at all)

In some cases, Internet access settings (usually, the WAN section in routers) may go wrong. By the way, if you have a new router and you just connected it for the first time, then they are not set for you at all, and the absence of the Internet in this case is not surprising ...

To check the settings, you need to go to the web interface of the router, as a rule, it is enough to enter the IP in the address bar of the browser 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 (link to instructions below). Then open the Internet settings (WAN) section.

Due to the abundance of various brands of routers and their firmware, it is hardly possible to give 100% instructions. For example, in Tenda routers this section is called "Internet Settings" (see the screen below 👇).

You need to enter those parameters of access to the Internet that the provider provided you when concluding an agreement for the provision of communication services.

Usually, if it is a PPPoE connection (one of the most popular in Russia), this is a login and password for accessing the Internet. Sometimes you need to specify specific IP addresses, DNS, etc.

PPPoE Connection Setup / Tenda Router

As another example, the TP-Link router settings window (section "Network / WAN" ). In principle, all the fields are the same; to fill them in, you will also need data from the contract with the provider.

I will also recommend one previous article on how to set up a router (Tenda FH456 was taken as a basis): create an Internet connection and Wi-Fi

👉 Is there a limit on the number of connected devices (is there a block by MAC address)

In some routers, you can set special security settings: for example, allow only a certain number of devices to connect, restrict devices by MAC address, etc.

Or in general, as in the bandwidth settings (Tenda router) - you can turn off Internet access for any of the devices!

I recommend checking these settings and making adjustments.

Bandwidth Control / Tenda Router / Clickable

By the way, I suppose that it is not always so easy to "go through" all the security settings of the router (especially if you are doing this for the first time).

In some cases, it is much faster to reset the router settings to default (default) and then manually re-set the parameters. To reset the router settings, they have (most often) a small barely noticeable "reset" button on the case (you need to press it with a pencil).

Reset button for router / router

👉 Check your provider's account balance. Are there any problems on his side

If everything is in order with the settings, pay attention to the work of the provider as well. Some providers have those. work is not so uncommon (especially if you have old equipment in the area, or other users are actively connected in your house). Try to clarify in those. support - are there those. works, and check your personal account - are there funds *.

* The advice may seem too trivial ... But I once had a case: I paid for communication services immediately for six months in advance.

A month later, the Internet provider increased the tariffs for its services, and my prepayment was only enough for 3 months. (after disconnecting the Internet - I was somewhat surprised by this reason ...).

👉 Check if everything is ok with the cable

Well, another not so rare reason is a break in the Internet cable. For example, in the apartment he is often gnawed by pets, in the entrance - by "barbarians". Also, the cable is often interrupted when rearranging furniture, heavy objects.

This also happens: the cable at the entrance of the house was barbarously cut off ...

Option 3: Internet is not available on smartphone / tablet (Android)

I recommend (as above) to first check if there is Internet access on other devices (i.e. make sure that the reason is in the smartphone).

1) Further, the first thing I would advise is to restart the smartphone / tablet (just hold down the power button for 3-5 seconds). A simple step like this often helps solve the problem.

Reboot your smartphone

2) Next, I recommend disabling / enabling Wi-Fi (try also enabling / disabling airplane mode).

Disable / enable Wi-Fi

3) If you have installed antiviruses (and other protective utilities), disable them for a while. Often, when they block the normal operation of applications on the Internet.

4) Check the date and time (if something is wrong with them, then usually the Wi-Fi icon turns gray).

Pay attention to the correct setting of the time zone, date format, etc. Often, when due to an incorrect date, Android restricts the network for security reasons.

Setting up the date and time on Android

5) Next, I recommend opening the Wi-Fi settings section and opening the window for changing your Wi-Fi network (to which you are connected).

Then check the box next to "Advanced settings" ("Optional") and check that no proxy server has been set! See example below. 👇

Proxy server - no (not set)

6) In the same tab, check that DHCP (auto obtaining IP) is set in the Wi-Fi network settings. See example below. 👇

IP Settings - DHCP

Save the settings and test the Internet.

7) If all of the above did not help, then try changing 👉 DSN servers (by default, you use your ISP's DNS, which does not always work quickly and stably).

To change them, it is enough:

  1. open Wi-Fi network settings;
  2. then check the box "Advanced" ("Additional");
  3. in point "IP Settings" indicate "Custom" ;
  4. and in the "DNS 1" and "DNS 2" fields - indicate 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, respectively.

Configuring DNS Servers

Then save the changes and check the network operation.

8) Well, the last thing I can advise is to try to do a full reset of the Android smartphone (tablet). However, keep in mind that after that you will have to set many settings and parameters that will be lost ...
