Sega emulator (in Russian), or how to play the console on a PC [Sega MD2]

Good day!

In the 90s, along with Dendy, another prefix was in great demand and excitement - Sega MD2 (or simply "Sega" in Russian). Such popular hits as Sonic, Jim the worm, Dune, Mortal Kombat, Rock-n-Roll racing, etc. could not leave anyone indifferent. And even now, to be honest, they win over many computer "novelties" ...

In general, on any modern computer / laptop, playing Sega now is no more difficult than launching a browser! Moreover, I say this without exaggeration ...

What does that require:

  1. a computer with a processor not lower than Pentium III (I think now 99.99% of users have a much more powerful PC);
  2. joystick: this is not a prerequisite, you can do with a keyboard (it's just that it's much easier to control from a gamepad in dynamic console games). By the way, now you can buy a joystick for "mere" pennies in Chinese online stores;
  3. 5-10 minutes time to set up spec. an emulator program (more on this below, with examples and pictures).

That's all, actually. Agree, not so much for a pleasant pastime ?!

How to play Sega on PC

STEP 1: get to grips with the basics

And so, as I said above, the first thing that needs to be downloaded to a PC is special. program Sega emulator ... It will allow your PC to recreate the work of the set-top box programmatically. It is in it that you will need to set video modes, filters, buttons (which you will control characters in games), etc.

I will notethat there are now a huge number of emulators for different platforms (Windows, Linux, etc.). They can differ from each other not only by some functions, but also by the number of supported games.

By the way, a few words about the games themselves. If the emulator program is essentially a prefix, then instead of cartridges, special ones are used. files - rums (in English "ROM" is a special file in which the game is recorded). Of course, in order to start playing Sega on a PC - in addition to an emulator, you will need these roms as well ...

Now let's move on to practice (it will be easier to figure it out this way).

STEP 2: choosing and loading an emulator, russification

I would recommend starting your acquaintance with the world of console games - with an emulator Gens... Why:

  1. it supports 97% of Sega games (of the remaining 3%, more than half work with minor errors);
  2. Gens code is written using assembler (machine codes), due to which it has a high speed of work;
  3. it supports opening games from ZIP archives;
  4. supports joysticks, network play, there is the ability to save, create screenshots, etc. (all basic set of options).

Gens

Officer. website: //www.gens.me/ (can be downloaded from Source Forge)

Advanced version: //segaretro.org/Gens/GS

Quick Details: Sega Mega Drive / Sega Genesis game console emulator (also supported: Sega-CD and 32x) for Windows, DOS, and Xbox. Its first version was released back in 1999, and at the moment it is one of the best emulators in its segment!

Note: on the official Gens website, you need to download the emulator itself (arrow 1 in the picture below), and the crack for it (arrow 2).

You need to download 2 archive files: the emulator itself and the crack

Next, you need to extract the contents of the archive file with the emulator (if you do not have a WinRAR archiver, you can use its analogues).

Extracting emulator files

Then copy the file-archive of the localization into the folder (where the archive with the emulator was extracted), and extract it (see the example in the screenshot below).

Russify the emulator

Actually, now you have a Russian emulator Gens, there is little left to do ...!

STEP 3: how to start playing

In order to open the game, you must first start the emulator (executable file "gens.exe", see the screenshot below).

Launching the Gens emulator

Then go to the menu "File" and click on "Open ROM" (you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + O).

Open ROM (or open a game)

After specify the file-rum and press "Open" .

Note: roms can be downloaded from specials. sites (as a rule, these files have the BIN or GEN extension. Sometimes they can be packed into ZIP archives).

Select the game file and click open

In general, if everything is in order with the files of the emulator and the game, the game should start (example below).

The game is working!

If this did not happen, then the reason may be:

  • the fact that the emulator simply does not support this game (it is rare, Gens cannot open no more than 1-2% of games);
  • the game / emulator file is broken (i.e. corrupted). Try to simply reload them. By the way, file corruption may indicate that your PC is infected with viruses;
  • you may not have any drivers installed (how to check and update them).

STEP 4: adjust graphics (select video filter)

Probably, almost immediately after starting the game, you will notice that the image in the emulator window is not very high-quality: some "cubes" are visible ...

This is influenced by the filter used to process the image. By default, Gens is set to "Normal" (on a modern monitor - this mode usually looks very stingy ...).

To fix the quality of the picture - go to the menu "Graphics / Processor" and change the filter to "2xSAI" (see example in the screenshot below).

2xSAI processor - improving image quality

The image quality should get better right away! Take a look at the two screenshots below.

Processing with different filters: Normal vs. 2xSAI

By the way, other (more advanced) filters can be downloaded from the sites of enthusiasts.

STEP 5: setting up control - assigning buttons

Well, in order to start playing fully, it remains to do the final touch - customize the control buttons! This is done quite easily.

First you need to open the menu "Settings / Joysticks" .

Settings - Joysticks

Further, in the "PORT 1" section (the first remote control / joystick), press the button opposite to "Player 1" "Redefine Keys" .

Redefine keys - remap keys

After that, select the button on the virtual joystick that you want to set (for example, "U" - "up", as in my example below) - and press on the real keyboard (real joystick) the key to which you give the "Up" task.

Thus, you need to set all the buttons.

STEP 6: setting up full screen mode

It is not always convenient to play in a small program window (there is no that atmosphere 👀). And when you transfer the emulator to full-screen mode (Alt + Enter combination), small "problems" may appear. A few words about them below ...

Gens - full screen

1) If you run the game on a laptop (PC?) With scaling other than 100% - part of the game image may not "fit" on the screen (a screenshot of the entire emulator window is shown below). To fix this, you need to change the "couple of checkmarks".

If the full screen image does not fit the screen

You need to go to the folder with the emulator and open the properties of the executable file "gens.exe" ... Next, in the "compatibility" tab, you need:

  1. check the optimization box in full screen;
  2. go to DPI settings and enable high resolution scaling override mode (example of what and how in the screenshot below).

Override scaling mode

After that, start the emulator again, open the game, and switch to full screen mode - the image should be displayed in full on full screen!

2) The second point: when the emulator is switched to full-screen mode, the settings of the handler (filter) are reset (more precisely, for the full-screen mode it is necessary to set the handler separately).

Just right-click anywhere on the screen with the game, and in the menu that appears, select a filter "2XSAI" (example below).

If you have black stripes at the edges of the screen, use the "Stretch" option (Shift + F2 combination).

That's all, good luck!
