How to find out the amount of memory of a video card, its type and other characteristics

User question

Hello.

Tell me how to find out the amount of video card memory? The fact is that one game slows down for me, and I began to compare it to those. characteristics with your PC - everything seems to fit, but I haven't decided on the volume ...

Hello!

Before considering this issue, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the performance of a video card does not directly depend on its video memory size (you can verify for yourself using the test results).

In addition, computer games depend not only on the operation of the video card: it is not uncommon when they slow down due to the "abnormal" operation of the hard disk. In general, I have a separate article on the blog about brakes and lags in games. Recommend!

Okay lyrics, now specifically on the topic of the question ...

Find out the characteristics of the video card

Using DxDiag (DirectX Diagnostic Tool)

Advantages of the method: you do not need to download and install anything on the system; works in all versions of Windows; it takes only 10 seconds to view the properties. time!

Cons: if the system is "not all right" (for example, there are no drivers), you will not recognize the information.

First, you must press the combination of buttons Win + R (to open the "Run" window), then enter the dxdiag command and click on the OK button - see the example below.

Run DirectX Diagnostic Tool (DxDiag)

Next, the diagnostic tool should start: we need the "Display" tab. Opening it, you will see the properties of your video card (see number-2 in the screenshot below). Actually, the required information has been received (see the column "Total memory") .

Screen - device, look at the properties of the video card (clickable)

Example, presented above, is worth noting separately: the fact is that I am special. showed an integrated IntelHD video card - and such cards use RAM (there is "confusion"). If you have a similar video card, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with this one: //ocomp.info/intelhd-videokarta-potyanet-li.html).

Through parameters and screen properties

Advantages of the method: you do not need to install anything; fast; minimum "digging" in hardware and software.

Cons: you may not know anything if you do not have video drivers installed on your system.

Some menus may differ slightly depending on the version of Windows (I'll show you with the newest Windows 10 as an example).

And so, click anywhere on the desktop with the right mouse button - in the menu that appears, select "Display Settings". See example below.

Screen options

Next, you need to open the link "Graphics adapter properties" (see screen below). In some versions of Windows, there may be just a "Properties" link.

Graph properties. adapter

Actually, by opening the properties, it remains only to view how much memory is available, how much is used, etc.

With the help of specials. utilities (extended information)

Advantages of the method: they will show information even if you do not have drivers or have errors in Windows; you can find out much more information: the type of memory, the exact model of the video card, frequencies, etc.

Cons: you need to download and install the utility (although their size is quite small, only a few MB).

CPU-Z

Developers site: //www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

A very small utility, but extremely useful. Allows you to find out almost all of those. characteristics about the processor, RAM and video card. In my opinion, it is very informative, and, moreover, it works even in those cases when other programs refuse or give errors.

After downloading and launching it, you must:

  1. open the "Graphics" tab;
  2. select a video card (if you have one, then it will be selected automatically);
  3. then you will see the amount of memory (Size, on the screen below 2048 MB) and its type (Type, on the screen below - DDR3).

Speccy

Developer site: //www.ccleaner.com/speccy

Free and very handy utility (by the way, from the developer of the equally well-known CCleaner cleaning program) ... Get everything you need in minutes: CPU, OS, RAM, motherboard, graphics, sound and optical devices, networking, and more. I have recommended it more than once on the pages of the site.

After starting the utility, even in the main window, without going anywhere, opposite your video card - you will see its memory size (see example below).

Speccy - general information

If this information is not enough, or you have nothing displayed, open the "Graphics Devices" tab. Next, you will see the detailed properties of your video card:

  • company and manufacturer;
  • device code, revision;
  • frequency;
  • bus interface;
  • current temperature;
  • driver and BIOS version;
  • amount of memory (virtual and physical).

AIDA-64

Official website: //www.aida64russia.com/

One of the most famous utilities for viewing the characteristics of a computer (by the way, it replaced the once popular Everest).

Pros: very informative (you can find out all the ins and outs of the computer). Works even if no drivers are installed.

Cons: paid.

After starting AIDA-64, open the "Display" section, then the "Windows Video" and "GPU" tabs. They contain comprehensive information about all video cards installed on your PC (laptop).

As for the amount of video memory, it is displayed in the "Windows Video" tab, an example is presented below.

That, in fact, is all. As a rule, no difficulties arise: if it does not work in one way, try another (I think that in this regard, the utilities CPU-Z, AIDA and Speccy are the most reliable option).
