How to turn off a laptop or PC monitor (if there is no button for this on the keyboard)

User question

Hello!

Alexander, I bought a new laptop and then found that it had no button on the keyboard to turn off the monitor. This is not very convenient when you need to leave it for the night for pumping, and it shines for the whole room.

Is it possible to somehow turn off the screen itself at a click, and the laptop to continue its work?

Hello.

In general, a typical task ...

In the article, answering your question, I will touch upon all the methods at once (so that this note will also be useful to other users).

Ways to turn off your monitor

Option 1: a button on the keyboard or on the monitor itself

And so, for a start, I recommend that you pay attention to the keyboard - to the function keys F1 ÷ F12... On many laptop models you can find specials. function to quickly turn off the screen - an icon in the form "square with a cross inside" (in the example below - Asus ZenBook).

So, in my case, to turn off the monitor, just press the combination FN + F7 (after that, to turn the screen back on - just press any key).

Option 2: via power settings

Windows has quite convenient power settings that allow you to set certain conditions under which the monitor will turn off. For example, you can set this action when the laptop is idle for 5 minutes.

Conveniently?!

To open the power supply section - press the combination Win + R (the Run window should appear) and use the commandpowercfg.cpl... See example below 👇.

Next, in the menu on the left, click on the link Power Button Actions .

After that, you can set the action for the device when:

  • pressing the sleep button;
  • when closing the lid. See example below 👇.

Disable display

By the way, also in the section "Power supply" I recommend to open the tab "Setting the display off" .

Display off setting

In this subsection, you can set the time of inactivity after which the computer will automatically turn off the display (for example, if no one presses a single key or moves the mouse for 5 minutes, the monitor will be turned off).

Windows has a special. keyboard shortcut Win + L to quickly lock the OS. If you press them, the user selection window will immediately appear on your screen (as when turning on the PC). See the photo below. 👇

At the same time, if you do not press anything for a minute or two, Windows will automatically turn off the screen. Very convenient! 👌

Logout - Welcome Screen

I will notethat with this method all open windows and programs are not closed! Those. after a new login - you will be able to continue working from the moment it was terminated ...

To create a shortcut - right-click (RMB) in any free space on the desktop, in the menu that appears, select "New / Shortcut" . 👇

Create shortcut

Further in the line "Specify the location of the object" copy and paste my red text (code) given below:

C: \ Windows \ System32 \ cmd.exe / c powershell.exe (Add-Type '[DllImport (\ "user32.dll \")] ^ public static extern int SendMessage (int hWnd, int hMsg, int wParam, int lParam ); '-Name a -Pas) :: SendMessage (-1,0x0112,0xF170,2)

Note: The above code has been tested on Windows 8/10 (on Windows 2012).

We copy specials. command

After that, give the name to the shortcut - it can be anything.

Name can be anything

Now, you will have a special on your desktop. shortcut - by double-clicking on it with the left mouse button, the monitor will turn off (to turn it on again, press any button on the keyboard).

Click on the shortcut and turn off the screen ...

If a you want our created shortcut to trigger on specials. keyboard shortcut- open it properties (by clicking on it RMB) and go to the tab "Label" ... In line "Quick call" specify the desired keyboard shortcut (for example, Ctrl + Alt + Z) and save the settings.

Now, working in any of the programs, you can quickly click on the preset combination and the monitor will turn off ... Convenient ?! ✌

👍 Option 5: using the spec. utilities

The previous version can be significantly "improved" if you install a special. the 👉 Volume utility.

In general, it is, of course, designed to adjust the sound, but there are specials in its arsenal. section with "hot keys" - there you can add many combinations for a variety of actions: add sound, brightness, turn off the screen, etc.

A few words about setting ...

After installation Volume the corresponding icon (👇) will appear in your tray - first you will need to open the program settings.

Then go to the section "Hotkeys" , select an action and set a combination for it (I have, for example, Alt + Shift + E 👇). After, save the changes.

Option 6: if you have two monitors

If you have another add-on connected to your computer / laptop. monitor - then one of them can be quickly turned off using the tab "Projecting" .

To call it quickly, you can use:

  1. combination 1: Win + P
  2. combination 2: Fn + F4 (or other function key, depending on the model of your device. See the screenshot below).

Fn + F4 - Adjust Projection (HP Pavilion Notebook)

Actually, the projection panel appears on the right: in it, you can select which monitor the device will feed the image to (and which one to turn off) with one mouse click.
