How to find out the IP address of a computer, laptop

Good day!

Of course, I understand that most users are not at all interested in articles on the technical side of the Internet (the main thing is that sites are opened, files are copied ...).

But here's a trivial situation: you wanted to play some kind of online game - and after all, there, someone is the server (the one who creates the game), and someone is the client (the one who connects). Of course, in order for other players to connect to you, they need to know your IP address. Here's the catch ... 😢

You may also need to know the IP to solve some issues and problems with software, to connect cloud drives, port forwarding, configure a network printer, etc.

Actually, in this article I will analyze the main questions regarding IP: how to find out what they are (external and internal), how does a static address differ from a dynamic address, etc.

So...

Is it possible to find out my location by IP-address, and what generally hides IP

Find out the IP address

👉 Brief educational program

Each computer that is connected to a local or global network has its own IP address ... It is a sequence of 4 numbers (👇) separated by dots (at least, an address of this kind in the 4th version of the protocol, which is in effect today almost everywhere) .

Yandex Internet meter (link to the service)

For example, 192.168.0.1 is the most common IP address on local networks. Please note that each number in IP is from 0 to 255. IP addresses 192.168.0. 256 - it can't be, this is a mistake!

👉 IP address can change every time the computer connects to the network (then it is called dynamic ), or remain constant ( static ). In Russia, when connecting to the Internet, ISPs most often issue dynamic IP addresses.

but, for a fee, you can order a static IP. For example, it allows you to host a site on your computer to which other users can connect. Note that some payment systems on the Internet are bound to an IP address for security purposes, which also contributes to the growth in the popularity of static addresses.

👉 Worth to say that the IP may still be internal and external ... For example, if you are connected to the Internet using a router (router), then you have an internal / local IP (like 192.168.0.102) and an external / global (for example, 92.254.210.18).

The bottom line is that all devices connected to the router - receive a local (internal) IP address - i.e. a local network is organized, which does not have to be connected to the Internet at all (for example, if you take out the Internet cable from the router, the Internet will disappear, but all your home devices will still be able to transfer files between themselves, since they are on the local network) ... However, when the router connects to the Internet, it also gets an external IP address.

Therefore:

  1. If you play at home on several PCs / laptops, then you need to use an internal (local) IP to connect within your local network.
  2. If you want to invite a friend from another part of the city to your game, tell him to connect to the external / global IP address. By the way, in this case, it is often necessary to perform port forwarding / opening (otherwise the router / router simply will not allow you to connect from the Internet to your local network).

👉 With the help of special. utilities

The fastest way to find out both external and internal IP (in my opinion) is to use special utilities to determine the characteristics of the PC. For example, I am very impressed with the Speccy utility. (from the creators of the equally well-known PC cleaning utility CCleaner) .

For example, in Speccy just open the tab Network and you will see two lines: IP Address and External IP Address - these are local and external IP addresses.The examples below, I think, without comments ...

👉 Via network connection

If you have a network connection configured on your computer and have the Internet, then finding out the IP is a matter of a few seconds. Open 👉 the Windows Control Panel at: Control Panel \ Network and Internet \ Network and Sharing Center.

Next open properties current internet connection.

Opening the properties of the current Internet connection

Next, a window with general information about the connection should appear - click on the button "Intelligence" (see screenshot below).

Intelligence

Actually, see the column "IPv4 Address" - this is the IP address of the computer. In my case, it is 192.168.0.102 (note that this internal / local IP).

IPv4 address is the internal IP address assigned by the router to our computer

Alternative option

You can also open the properties of the current connection in a different way:

  1. press the key combination Win + R (to bring up a window "Run" );
  2. enter command ncpa.cpl and click OK.

How to open network connections || ncpa.cpl

In the network connections window that opens, select the adapter through which the network is accessed and open it state ... See below for an example. (The active adapter is shown in color, also note the "green" stripes).

👉 Via the command line

To open the command line: use the Win + R key combination to open the window "Run" , and the command CMD - to call a line. See example below.

cmd - launch command line / universal way for Windows 7, 8, 10

At the command prompt, type "ipconfig" (without quotes) and press Enter.

Next, you should see a long list of various adapter options. Pay attention to the line "IPv4-address" - this is the IP-address (most often, this is the internal IP-address issued by the router / router).

👉 How to find out external / global IP address

Method number 1

The easiest way to find out your external IP address is to go to special resources. Here are a few popular ones:

  1. //whoer.net/ru
  2. //2ip.ru/
  3. //pr-cy.ru/browser-details/
  4. //ip.xss.myip.ru/

Below is a screenshot from one of the sites above. In addition to IP, your provider, location, OS, browser are determined.

Method number 2

Also, the external IP can be found in the spec. utilities. One of them I have already recommended above is Speccy ... You need to open the section "Network" - then look at the graph "External IP Address" ... See example below (👇).

Speccy - view IP-addresses, Network section

Method number 3

You can find out the network status, parameters, DNS, MAC addresses (what is a MAC address), etc., in the settings of the router / router.

How to enter the settings of the router, and what to do if the settings do not open - step by step instructions

Most often, you need to open the section "Connection status" or "Connection information" ... In my case, the Tenda router shows all the necessary information at once:

  1. IP address in the local network;
  2. WAN IP address (external);
  3. MAC address;
  4. Subnet mask;
  5. gateway and other information.

That's it for now. Criticism on the case is welcome ... 😉

Good luck to all!
