How to get back the old photo view in Windows 10

User question

Hello.

Not so long ago I reinstalled Windows - I switched from 7 to 10. Everything seems to work, but photos and pictures are opened in some kind of dumb application. How do I return to the standard photo view as it was in Windows 7?

Good time.

By default, the new Windows 10 OS uses the "Photos" application (or "Photos") instead of the standard viewer (which was in Windows XP and 7). On the one hand, it has somewhat richer functionality, but on the other hand, it is not so convenient (and requires a habit 👀).

In general, in this article we will consider how you can restore the "old" way of viewing photos in the "new" OS (just like in the joke: "We used to live well, now it's even better! But still, I want to live well again .. . ").

So...

How to return the standard viewer

First, you need to open the Windows 10 OS settings (you can use the START link, or the Win + i button combination).

Windows 10 settings

Next, you need to go to the section "Applications" .

Application section

Then you should go to the section "Default Applications" , find a subtitle "Viewing Photos" and click on the selection button ... (for an example, see the screenshot below).

Default Apps - Photo Viewer

Next, a list of applications will appear in which you can select any of them (for an example, see the screenshot below). In our case, the choice is predetermined ... ✔

Important! If you do not have the "View Windows Photos" item in the application selection list, you need to add some parameters to the registry. This can be done using specials. file - on_photoviewer (zipped using WinRAR).

Viewing Windows Photos

Now, if you double-click on any of the photos, it should automatically open in the good old viewer (as in the example below).

Photo Viewer

I can't help but note that some file formats (mostly less common) may continue to open in the application "Photos" ... To fix this, right-click on such a file and open it properties .

Image properties

❼

Further in the tab "General" change the application that is used to open this file type.

Change application

After specifying such settings, all files of the same format will open in the selected application.

PS

By the way, in my humble opinion, it is much better to use a special viewer, for example, ACDSee, to work with pictures and photographs.

ACDSee main window

Judge for yourself, firstly, it supports almost all graphics formats; secondly, it allows you to view photos in archives (without extracting them); thirdly, in it you can change and process pictures using the built-in editor. However, it also has analogues (see the link to the article below).

That's all for now. Happy work!
