The Internet is cut off via a Wi-Fi router (why does the Wi-Fi network fall off or disappear)

Hello!

Today in this article I want to touch upon the problem of unstable Wi-Fi operation: when the Internet is cut off at regular intervals. Of course, with this problem, you can forget about comfortable viewing of online videos, network games, etc.

Fixing Wi-Fi this way is (in my opinion) more difficult than it would be if the network just wasn't working. When there is no clear reason, you have to check different options, carry out diagnostics, etc. 👀

In general, be that as it may, if you are faced with a constant interruption of Wi-Fi connection, then the first thing I recommend:

  1. restart your computer (laptop) and router;
  2. connect add. device (second laptop, phone) to the same Wi-Fi network and see if the connection is lost on both devices, or only on one;
  3. check with the Internet provider if everything is in order with the channel, if there are maintenance work on this day.

Now what to do next ... 👌

Why does Wi-Fi drop and disappear?

If the connection is broken on all devices

High load on the router

The most common reason for the periodic loss of the Internet via Wi-Fi (and the network itself) is reboot the router , its reconnection to the Internet (just at this moment the connection is lost for 4-7 seconds).

Rebooting the router can occur for various reasons, but most often due to high load (for example, if you are actively downloading torrent files). Usually, this happens with inexpensive budget models of devices that simply cannot cope with the load and go into reboot ...

What can you advise:

  1. open the router settings (how to do this - //ocomp.info/kak-zayti-v-nastroyki-routera.html);
  2. further in the wireless network settings, it is worth trying to change the security mode from WPA2-PSK to something less demanding, for example, to WEP or WPA (or for a while without a password at all). This will reduce the load on the router and quickly identify the cause;

    Changing the encryption type

  3. if your router allows you to limit the max. bandwidth speed - I recommend doing this (the value is selected experimentally). Try limiting it to 2000 KB / sec first. (in my experience: all the routers that I came across could hold this speed ...).

    Download limitation

  4. by the way, you can also limit the speed in the torrent program. If you use uTorrent or its derivatives - just right-click on the program icon in the system tray (next to the clock) and set the limit ...

    Limiting torrent downloads

Actually, if, after the performed procedures, Wi-Fi stops falling, then you can continue:

  • either leave everything as it is and use a router with speed limits;
  • or buy a more powerful router that can handle a high load.

Coincident radio channel

If you live in an apartment building, then surely, when searching and connecting to your Wi-Fi network, dozens of others have seen. Each such network operates at its own frequency (radio channel). Usually, the router sets the radio channel automatically, by itself ...

However, if several routers nearby will work on the same radio channel: the connection may periodically break off, the network speed will be low.

To check which radio channels are busy near you - you can recommend one small utility InSSIDer ... As you can see from the screenshot below, channels 2, 7, 5, 1 are free.

Note: Channels 1 to 13 are used in Russia.

Actually, then you can try to put a free radio channel in the router settings and see the difference - whether the Wi-Fi network will start working stably.

Router firmware

Firmware is a special firmware, thanks to which the router "knows" what and when to do it. In some cases, there may be errors in the firmware, due to which the router may behave unstably, for example, reboot, disconnect, slow down ...

Of course, in most router models, you can simply change the firmware (if it exists for it). As a rule, it is enough to open the router settings, go to the device control tab, and click on the firmware update button ...

Note: the firmware of the router can lead to a malfunction of the device (therefore, it is important to select the firmware exactly for your router model). In addition, after the firmware, you will be denied warranty service.

Firmware update

Note that the firmware (firmware) is (most often) the most common file with the extension .bin, for example, "US_AC5V1.0RTL_V15.03.06.32_multi_TRU01.bin".

Prevent the device from turning off the Wi-Fi adapter

By default, Windows has an option to disable network adapters (including Wi-Fi) in order to save energy. In some cases (especially if you often use standby mode, hibernation, etc.), the adapter may not come out of its "hibernation" (ie, not turn on in time).

First of all, I recommend that you prohibit such a shutdown of the system. This is done simply:

  1. first you need to open the device manager;
  2. then find the tab "Network adapters" and reveal it. Then you need to open properties Wi-Fi adapter (if you do not know which one you need, perform this operation one by one for all);

    Network adapters - properties

  3. then, in the power management tab, uncheck the box with permission to turn off this device (in order to save energy) and save the settings;

    Allow the disconnection of this device

  4. in addition, I also recommend going into the settings Windows Power Supply ... To do this, click Win + R and use the command powercfg.cpl ... Next, open additional power settings (see screenshot below);

    Additional power options

  5. find the tab "Wireless adapter settings" and set the maximum performance mode;

    Maximum productivity

  6. then restart your computer / laptop and check if the Wi-Fi is working.

Change power plan

This recommendation applies to laptops (and other portable devices).

In the power settings (to open them: Win + R ->  powercfg.cpl ) you may have several modes of operation of the device. Usually, there are three of them: energy saving, optimal, high performance. At the time of diagnostics and troubleshooting - I recommend setting the mode high performance, see screenshots below.

powercfg.cpl - open power settings

High performance

Please also note that some laptops (for example, from Lenovo, Sony, etc.) may have their own pre-installed power control centers devices. Among their options are also modes that limit some of the capabilities of devices ...

I recommend that you check if you have similar control centers installed, and, if so, switch the power supply to normal. operating mode (without saving!).

Reinstall and update the driver on the Wi-Fi adapter

During the installation (reinstallation) of Windows 8/10 - the system, as a rule, automatically installs the driver on the Wi-Fi adapter. Quite often, its version is far from optimal (but nevertheless, it works).

It is highly desirable to change such drivers to "native" ones. this has its advantages:

  1. the speed of the adapter increases (I have repeatedly encountered it on Dell, Acer laptops);
  2. the device works more stable;
  3. may appear add. options and control centers.

How to update the driver for a Wi-Fi adapter

Option 1

The best way is to use the official website of your device manufacturer.

To do this, you need to find out the exact model of your device, and then "drive" it into the Google search bar (for example) - as a rule, the manufacturer's website will be lit on the first line ...

Screenshot from the official HP support page

Option 2

If you have problems with the first method, you can resort to the help of specials. utilities - Driver Booster. It will automatically find, download and install the required driver.

Note: there is no need to update all the drivers that Driver Booster recommends - just update one driver for the Wi-Fi adapter ...

Change connection properties

Well, the last thing I wanted to cite today ... On some laptops (for example, on Acer and HP) some kind of "glitch" may occur, in which connection with Wi-Fi is lost, if the connection checkbox is not set in the properties of the network connection when his name is not visible ...

How to check it (and eliminate, if necessary):

  1. first you need to open all available network connections: to do this, click Win + R , and use the command ncpa.cpl (example below);

    ncpa.cpl - View all network connections

  2. then open state wireless connection (this is usually a Wi-Fi adapter);

    Network status

  3. then go to the properties of the wireless network and check the box next to the item "Connect even if the network does not broadcast its own name (SSID)" ... An example is shown below.

    Wireless network properties

  4. save your settings and restart your laptop (computer). Check network operation ...
