Online photo translator: for a computer and a smartphone (translation of what got into the camera / phone lens)

Good day everyone!

Probably, almost every one of us came across photos, pictures, and just saw posters in a foreign language somewhere. And almost always, I would like to quickly translate and find out what is written there ... 😉

In general, in this case, you can go in three ways:

  1. open some online translator and manually type in the desired text (this option is long, painful and dreary);
  2. use programs for translating pictures into text (for example, ABBYY Fine Reader), and then copy the resulting text into the translator and find out the result;
  3. use special applications and services that allow you to perform the operation of translating text from a picture (or photo) automatically (i.e., do what is described in paragraph 2 on your own, without your participation). 👍

Actually, this article will be just about the third option. I note that in the article I will consider translators from photos for both PC and smartphone.

Choosing a translator with a photo

Note: I will immediately note that the better the quality of the original photo (picture), the better the quality of the recognized text from it, and the translation itself.

Online services (for PC)

Yandex translator

Link to download the picture: //translate.yandex.ru/ocr

An excellent translation service from one language to another (already supports more than 95 languages!). As for the recognition of text in a picture, the Yandex service does an excellent job with this task (it is in no way inferior to the renowned Fine Reader program).

In my example, I used a photo of a book page (in English). The steps for translation are quite simple:

  1. follow the link given above;
  2. upload your picture with foreign text;
  3. specify the language (usually the service detects automatically. In my case, "Anglican -> Russian");
  4. then just click on the "Open in translator" link (see screenshot below).

Yandex translator - picture loaded

Left: the original text is presented, which was in the photo, on the right is its translation. Of course, machine translation requires some work: you can copy the finished text and transfer it to Word for further elaboration ...

Note that the quality of the translation also depends on the subject matter of the text. And since I took fiction, it is not translated very well ... 😢

Free Online OCR

Supports formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, PDF, DjVu

Website: //www.newocr.com/

Unlike Yandex, this service is less finicky - it even supports the DjVu format (and there are a lot of English books, magazines, articles in it).

In addition, I note that some photos (where rare fonts are used) - the service recognizes much better!

And one more thing: the service allows you to use two translation options: using Google technology and using Microsoft Translator. So, if there are such pictures or photos that Yandex-translator could not cope with, try this service!

How to use it:

  1. go to the main page of the site (the address is indicated just above);
  2. select the file you want to recognize;
  3. indicate two languages: one, which is in the photo (English, for example); the second - to which you want to translate (Russian).
  4. push the button "Upload + OCR" (that is, download and recognize the text on the photo).

Specify the file and upload it to the server

After a while (depending on the size of the downloaded file), you will see the received text and several links above: you can select Google translator, Bing, just download the received text.

Choosing a translation option

Choosing Bing, I got a translation of my text (the quality is not high, since the work is fictional).

Recognizing text from an image

This service is designed to get text from pictures (jpg, jpeg, png) and PDF files (including multi-page files!).

After such recognition, you can check the received text for errors and send it automatically to the Google translator (see the corresponding buttons in the menu on the right ... 👇).

Service results

To improve the recognition procedure:

  1. it is advisable to take a picture or photo in good quality (clear!). Ideally - a scan in PDF format;
  2. the text on the image should be horizontal, without slopes and irregularities.

Smartphone applications (Android)

Google Lens (magic lens) 👍

Google play: //play.google.com/

Google lens!

A universal application that allows you to translate any foreign text that fell into camera lens (you don't even need to take a photo!). By the way, it supports 103 languages (Russian, English, German, Chinese, Turkish, etc.).

In addition, the application has a "conversation" mode: everything that your interlocutor says in a foreign language - the application will translate into your native language!

Well, it should be noted that the "Google lens" allows you to find out what kind of objects you are surrounded by: for example, you pointed the lens at a tree - and it will say that it is "birch" ... 😉 (and will find similar pictures).

In general, I recommend everyone to have a similar thing on a smartphone. It will definitely come in handy!

Google Translate

Google Play: //play.google.com/

A very worthy application for a smartphone, which allows you to translate text into 103 languages (note that 59 languages are supported offline - that is, the Internet is not needed!)!

The application has a built-in translation function by the camera in real time: i.e. just point your phone camera at the English text - and you will see the text in Russian in the translator window!

Nevertheless, there is also a classic work in the arsenal: this is when a picture is photographed in a foreign language, and then the text in Russian is processed and issued (for example).

It's quite simple to use:

  1. launch the application and select two languages: the source (which is in the picture), and your native language, into which you want to translate;
  2. then click on the "camera" icon (see the screen below, arrow number 1);
  3. then you need to point the camera at the foreign text (note, the application immediately gives out the translation). However, if the text is long, I recommend photographing it (see the screen below 👇, arrow number 2).

Please note that Google translator is already trying to translate text online before photographing.

Then click on the button "Choose all" and click on the blue arrow. Next, you will see your translation of the text. See screenshots below. 👇

Selecting all text for translation

In general, everything is done very efficiently and comfortably. As a rule, almost all phones are carried with them, which means that you can always quickly translate a poster or photo. I recommend to review!

Microsoft Translator

Google Play: //play.google.com/

How the Microsoft Translator app works

This is a free translator from Microsoft that allows you to work with 70 of the most popular languages in the world (by the way, even offline).

Note that the application allows you to translate photos from the camera, pictures and screenshots from memory, voice (conversations), text. Those. the application is universal and suitable for translating any data format!

A good assistant in travel and foreign language classes! 😉

Note: The translator can also read the phrase (so you can pronounce it correctly or learn it).

Minus: poorly recognizes handwritten text and a number of fonts.

Yandex translator

Google Play: //play.google.com/

An example of working with a translator

A solid translation application from Yandex (92 languages supported, including offline). I would immediately note the "omnivorous" application: it allows you to translate even handwritten text 👆 (which many analogues cannot!).

By the way, in addition to translating photos and pictures, there is voice input and dubbing of translated texts. It is very convenient to know the correct pronunciation of rare words.

Another useful feature: tooltips when typing, and auto-detection of the language (in most cases, you do not need to specify anything manually).

Feel free to recommend to meet you! 👌

ABBYY Lingvo

Google play: //play.google.com/

Several languages are available for free use: Russian, English, German, French, Spanish.

ABBYY Lingvo application (dictionary)

This smartphone application allows many sentences, phrases and words to be translated without internet access. In total, the application supports three types of translation:

  • classic manual input: when you yourself are typing the desired text;
  • from an already taken screenshot, picture or photograph;
  • and using the phone camera (in 1 click!).

In general, a good helper for travel, study and work. You can quickly translate a small text, a postcard, a newspaper article, correspondence with a colleague / friend, etc.

Features:

  1. "live translation": hover the pointer over a word from the displayed text on the screen - get its translation immediately;
  2. photo translation: select a screen or photo and get the translation of the words that are captured on it;
  3. 11 dictionaries are available for download for everyone (free!);
  4. convenient hints when searching for words;
  5. the dictionary contains not only the translation of the word, but also its transcription, grammatical information about it, examples of use (you can also listen to it - very useful for those who learn a foreign language);
  6. the history of the words that you requested earlier is kept (it is convenient to learn words by rechecking your memory from time to time!).
