How to find and update a driver for an Ethernet controller (network card)

Hello.

If you do not have a driver for a network card installed in your system, of course, the Internet via a LAN cable will not work, and in the device manager instead of the card model, a faceless "Ethernet controller", see the screen below (actually, hence the title of the article 👌).

Worse yet, many users fall into the "trap" with this problem. to have the Internet, you need a driver for a network card, and to download a driver, you need an Internet ...

It is worth noting that such questions often arise with Windows XP, Vista, 7 (in Windows 10 - the automatic installer at least installs the driver).

In general, in this article I will offer several options for solving such a snag. By the way, most likely you will need a smartphone (with the Internet) at hand to download the driver (or another PC / laptop).

Driver disc

If the kit with your PC / laptop came with a CD with drivers, then, as a rule, it is enough to install everything that was on it and the problem will be resolved ...

Usually, CD drives are no longer installed on modern devices, so I don't get hung up on this and go on to step 2.

We use specials. 3DP Net utility

3DP Net is a special. utility for auto-installation of the driver on the network card. Moreover, it can select a driver for almost any network controller, in extreme cases - it installs a universal one (Wi-Fi adapters are also supported).

You can download 3DP Net here: //ocomp.info/update-drivers.html#3DP_Net

By the way, its size is only about 100 MB, which allows you to download it from any smartphone and then transfer it to your PC.

Defining the map model via the command line

If you have a regular PC and a network controller is built into the mat. board, you can find and download the driver on the manufacturer's website. To find out the exact model of the mat. board, do the following:

  1. open a command prompt;
  2. enter the command: wmic baseboard get product, Manufacturer, version, serialnumber and press Enter.

Further, according to the manufacturer and model of the board in the search engine (Google, Yandex), you can find the official website and download the driver ...

Model definition by VEN and DEV

This method is similar to the previous one, only the driver will be searched for by special. identifiers VEN and DEV (note: each equipment has its own, unique).

To find out VEN and DEV: in the device manager, click right click on the required equipment (for example, on the Ethernet controller), and go to it properties .

In the details tab, select a property "Equipment ID" : the search string will appear in front of you.

Note: please note that not all parameters are needed, but only opposite VEN and DEV. In my case (see screenshot below), it will be VEN: 10EC, DEV: 8168.

Connect your phone as a modem and update with Driver Booster

If you have a smartphone at hand (with a connected mobile Internet), then the driver can be found quickly and automatically. I will consider the steps ...

1) We connect the phone to the PC with a USB cable and open the add. network settings (see the screen below, Android 6.0 is shown).

Smartphone settings

2) Next, turn on the option that makes your Android phone a USB modem.

3) If the Internet appears on the PC / laptop, the corresponding icon will appear in the tray (see example below).

A network appeared ...

4) Next, you need to install the Driver Booster utility: after analyzing the system, it will offer you a list of all drivers that can be updated for review. First of all, install the driver on the network controller (after that, as soon as the Internet via a LAN cable appears, update all the others ...).

Use Windows 10 (latest version)

If you have Windows 7 (or an older OS) installed, then one of the options for correcting the situation may be to install Windows 10. It contains universal drivers for most network cards in its kit (yes, perhaps the controller will not develop its max. speed, or not all functions will be available - BUT it will work!).

How to install a driver without an installer

Another fairly popular problem: drivers are not always distributed in the form of a convenient "Setup" file, which you just need to run once and wait for the installation ...

In some cases, after extracting the archive (downloaded from the official site), you have several folders containing "several" files ...

Then you need to do this:

1) Open device Manager , right-click on the device for which you downloaded the drivers, and select the option "Update drivers" .

Update Drivers / Device Manager

2) After indicating that you want to search for drivers manually on this computer (see the screenshot below).

Search in manually

3) Next, specify the folder into which the driver was extracted - after that, Windows will automatically find it "there" and install it (without your additional help ✌).

Specify the folder with the driver

PS

By the way, earlier, this is exactly how the installation of most of the drivers took place. And after reinstalling the OS - at times, it took not a single hour to "tinker" with the settings of the video card driver, sound and network adapter, etc. (usually, there was neither sound, nor the required amount of HZ on the monitor ...).

Still, no matter how "scolded" the creators of Windows - a modern 10 after installation is almost ready to work, and saves a "ton" of time ...
