This site cannot provide a secure connection - an error in the Chrome browser

Good time!

In the last couple of years, the HTTPS protocol has become very actively promoted (if anyone does not know - this "thing" allows you to ensure the encryption of your data when working with the site, that is, increases security). Everything would be fine, but excessive "haste" with the implementation of this new protocol (in my opinion) leads to all sorts of errors ...

Actually, in today's article I want to give recommendations for those who, having gone to a certain site, will see a simple white window with an error "This site cannot provide a secure connection" (what it looks like in Chrome - I have shown it in the screenshot below). Note that similar errors are possible in other browsers: Firefox, Opera, etc.

What to do if you see a similar error

Check your antivirus settings

Perhaps this is the first thing I would recommend to start with. The fact is that antiviruses check all opened sites (before they are shown in your browser), including HTTPS.

The browser, on the other hand, "may" notice that the site is not viewed "directly" and will give an error that a secure connection is not ensured (this can occur when opening almost any site, even such large ones as Vkontakte, Odnoklassniki, Google, Yandex, etc.). Most often, I noticed such an error when using DR.WEB and AVAST antiviruses.

I recommend disabling HTTPS checking in the antivirus settings for the duration of the check. For example, in DR.WEB for this you need to go to the tab "Settings / General / Network" and move the slider responsible for secure connections to the mode "Off" .

Disable HTTPS inspection of connections in DR.WEB

As for the AVAST antivirus, it is even clearer and simpler here. In chapter "Basic settings" just uncheck the box "Enable HTTPS Scanning" .

In most cases, after such a simple setup, the error should disappear ...

Check the date and time

The next important point is the current time and date. If it is installed incorrectly, then many programs and services (including the browser) may start to work incorrectly.

Pay attention also to your time zone (because of this, by the way, a problem with the same two-factor authentication may appear on the smartphone).

Check and disable "unnecessary" plugins / extensions

Chrome address — chrome: // extensions

Address bar in Chrome

Next, I would recommend checking all installed extensions and add-ons in the browser (in Chrome, I gave the address of the page above).

Remove special attention to those extensions that block, accelerate or encrypt traffic. I recommend disabling all of them (for a while), and this is done quickly enough - you just need to move the slider (see the screenshot below).

Try clearing your cache, cookies and temporary files

In Chrome, to clear your browsing history, temporary files and cache - you need to press the key combination Ctrl + Shift + Del, then select the time range (I recommend clearing all the time), and click on the button "Delete data" ... An example is shown below.

Check your computer for viruses and adware

1) Firstly, even if you have a modern antivirus installed on your PC, I recommend downloading some online scanner and rechecking the system with it. They work fast enough and do not conflict with the installed security software.

2) Secondly, I want to draw your attention to the fact that some types of viruses are not detected by classic antiviruses (for example, adware that is embedded in your browser). By the way, these ad modules are the most popular now ...

In one of the previous articles, I told you how to check your computer and remove such modules (the link is given below).

Try using a different browser / device

Well, as a last piece of advice, I would recommend trying to open the site using a different browser (or even on a second PC / laptop / phone). As a diagnosis and search for the cause, this can help.

PS

If you are using Windows 7 (and have not updated it for a long time), I recommend installing all the latest security updates. It is even better, of course, to switch to a more modern OS (if a couple of years ago I would have reacted very negatively to this advice, now I think that there is no big choice. Anyway, sooner or later you will have to switch to something more new ...).

That's all for now. Add-ons will come in handy as always!

All the best!
