The laptop screen began to go blank during operation, what should I do?

User question

Hello.

Tell me how can I solve the problem with Lenovo laptop. During Windows startup (after the logo appeared), the screen has recently started to go blank (you can hear from the sound that the OS has booted).

What to do to turn on the screen, or just in the service? It all started after the laptop was connected to a large TV screen. Didn't something burn out?

Thank you in advance.

Dear day!

I must say that this problem is quite common. This can happen both due to software reasons (software malfunctions, incorrect settings, etc.), and due to hardware problems. From experience, I immediately notice that in most cases the problem is in the software.

Judging by your question and its description, you have incorrect screen settings - i.e. the laptop "thinks" that it is still connected to the additional screen and transmits a picture to it. Let's try to fix it now! ..

By the way, if you have any artifacts on the screen (stripes, ripples, etc.), I recommend that you familiarize yourself with this article.

Why the screen goes blank: the main reasons

Screen Settings (About the Projector)

When connecting a laptop to a TV (for example) or to any other add. monitor - you go to the screen settings and set the display option:

  • show the picture both on the laptop monitor and on the screen;
  • show the picture only on the laptop screen;
  • show only on the TV screen, etc.

But after disconnecting the laptop from the additional screen, it does not always "know" about it and can continue to broadcast the picture to the disconnected monitor, and turn off its own ... A kind of mini-software failure ...

To adjust the screen and select a projector, you can:

but) for Windows 7: go to the control panel at the following address:

Control Panel \ Hardware and Sound \ Display

Next, select the link on the left - "Connect to Projector" (if the screen is off, you are unlikely to find this setting by touch. However, you can enter safe mode, in most cases everything works in it);

Connect Projector / Windows 7

b) for Windows 8/10: Press the WIN + P buttons at the same time, then the down arrow and Enter. If it does not help, WIN + P again, 2 times the down arrow and again Enter.

Project - To Computer Screen Only

By the way, when you press WIN + P - a small window appears with a choice of 4 display options:

  • only a computer;
  • duplicate;
  • expand;
  • just a projector.

When you press the up / down arrow, you change the set mode. By the way, if you select the last option and press Enter, then your screen will go out (curious - they can try ☝).

Selecting a display option

👉 IMPORTANT!

On some laptop models - the screen can be turned off using special function keys.

For example, in Acer notebooks, you can use the key combination "Fn + F6".

Keyboard shortcuts are usually always listed in the documentation that came with your laptop.

Power settings

Also, the screen goes blank quite often due to power settings (note: most often this happens during periods of inactivity, when you leave your laptop / PC).

To check your power settings - open 👉 Windows Control Panel, then section "Hardware and Sound" , further section "Power supply" (see screenshot below).

Power supply

In this section, you should see several power supply plans (balanced, economical, efficient, + additional options are possible) - open the settings of your the current plan (see screen below).

Selected mode

Next, you will see the setting "Turn off display" : next to this line there will be two different periods of time, depending on whether the laptop is running on battery or mains. Just set more minutes and save the parameters.

How long does it take to turn off the display

Please also note that some laptop models (for example, Lenovo, Sony, etc.) may have special additional power control applications (installed along with the drivers). Here to give recommendations, how and what is difficult, tk. there can be a lot of software options.

As a rule, to open such a panel (as in the screenshot below), just look at the icons in the tray, if you have such a manager, you should find the icon there!

Video driver problem

If the drivers "flew" to the video card, then more often than not, the screen changes the resolution (everything becomes large on it, the window borders are not visible, etc.), in some cases the colors, brightness, etc. are distorted.

Quite rarely, but this happens, the picture disappears altogether, and the computer must be booted 👉 in safe mode to install the driver.

Because the description of the problematic of drivers is a rather large topic, then below I will give links to my previous articles, which dealt with the issues of finding and updating drivers.

Infecting a laptop with virus software

Of course, you can expect a lot from viruses: damage to files, and formatting the disk, and sending virus messages, including a "game" with the screen: shutting down, twisting, changing the brightness, etc.

True, such viruses are very rare. Nevertheless, I cannot but recommend checking the laptop with a modern antivirus with updated databases ...

Not all types of viruses can be found and recognized by the classic antivirus. If he didn't find anything, use the recommendations from this article.

👉 One more moment!

Recently, it is not classic viruses that have caused much more problems, but adware that is embedded in everything that is possible: in Windows, in browsers, etc.

It happens that such applications purposefully show you a large banner, and so that you click on it, they try to change the screen resolution so that only this banner is visible. As a result, an error occurs (for example, a conflict with the video driver), and the screen goes blank.

Overheating, dust cleaning

If the ventilation holes and the overall cooling system of your laptop are clogged with dust, then the laptop may simply turn off if it overheats.

By the way, in some laptops (for example, in a number of models from ASUS), when the screen overheats, various flickers appear, or even the screen goes blank.

In general, it is advisable to clean any laptop from dust 1-2 times a year (depending on the conditions in which the device operates).

Some laptops are quite easy to disassemble, and for cleaning it is enough to remove the back cover and carefully blow through everything; other models - to get to the radiator,you will have to "gut the whole" device (which I do not advise people without experience to do).

I described my recommendations and advice in one of my previous articles, the link below.

PS

1) If the above measures did not help, you can try the Windows recovery option - //ocomp.info/vosstanovlenie-windows-10.html (if, of course, you have checkpoints and they were created when everything was working in normal mode) ...

2) Still, as one option, I can recommend booting the laptop from the emergency LiveCD - this will allow you to understand if the screen shutdown is related to crashes in Windows.

That's all for now, add-ons on the topic - always come in handy!

Happy work!
