How to save a frame from a video to a picture. Creating a screenlist (storyboard) in auto-mode

Good time!

To create some interesting memes, arts, photo collections, or just capture interesting moments, you often need to save a certain frame from the video (for example, into a JPG / BMP picture).

It would seem that this is a simple screenshot (made it, and saved it through Paint), but this method does not always work and not for all videos (all the more it is not convenient if you need to save many screenshots, say, fifty in 30 minutes .).

Actually, in this short note I will offer several ways not only to save certain frames, but also to create entire screenlists (this is the so-called storyboard: when a dozen or two small pictures from a video file are captured on a large canvas).

So...

We save the necessary frames from the video, and storyboards 👇

Method 1: using "Movies and TV" / "Films & TV"

This app is installed by default in Windows 10, and usually all videos open in it. So, if you need the simplest (single) screenshot of a certain moment - no other software is needed ...

After the desired video is open in the "Films & TV" player, pay attention to the small icon at the bottom of the window "Pencil" ... By clicking on it, you will have an additional. menu from which you can select "Save photo from Video" ("Save photo from video") .

Save photo from Video

Next, the application will automatically open "Photos" (also built into Windows 10). Select the frame you need, and click on the icon "Floppy disks" (Save Photo) - woo-a-la and the frame is saved! Conveniently?! 👌

Method 2: using the Pot Player video player

Third-party video players are much more functional (besides, they work in any Windows OS). For example, I am impressed by the Pot Player - it has many possibilities for creating screenlists (with the required number of frames), and individual screenshots, and the ability to turn on subtitles, etc.

You can download Pot Player and other video players from the link below.

Now how to work with Pot Player.

1) First, you need to open the video from which you want to "get" the necessary frames ...

Video open in Pot Player

2) Next, you need to open the player menu and use the tab:

  1. "Video / Stills Recording / Thumbnailing" - if you need a screenlist (storyboard). Hot combination so as not to open this menu every time - Alt + N;
  2. "Video / Record Frames / Save current frame with original size" - creating a screenshot of the current moment (hot combination - Ctrl + E).

3) Actually, when the frames were made in abundance, then you should open the folder with images (the one where the player saves everything). She is in the same menu "Video / Stills Recording" (see screenshot below).

Open folder with images

4) Below are the results, as you can see everything is quite structured: the names of the files are assigned automatically according to the time of their creation.

Screenlist and screenshots

The storyboard looks quite clear, you can immediately understand what this video is about. The file name, size, resolution, video and audio codecs, and duration are automatically added in the top corner in the corner. Very convenient!

Method 3: using the XnView viewer

In addition to directly video players to solve the current task, you can use viewers (these are special programs for viewing multimedia files. They are much more convenient than the explorer when it comes to working with a large number of pictures and videos).

In my example below, I will show how to extract a frame from a video using XnView (I recommend having it on a PC: the program is small and often helps to solve simple tasks with graphic files ...).
