How to update laptop BIOS (for example HP)

Good day!

In general, you don't have to update the BIOS very often (and I would warn anyone who is just chasing a new version ...) against this operation. There should usually be good reasons for this:

  1. in the new BIOS version, bugs were fixed, thanks to which the device will work faster
  2. the old version does not see some equipment (or does not work correctly with it);
  3. new features have been added.

Well, I can't help but say that if some error or failure occurs during the BIOS update process (for example, you tried to install the BIOS version not from your laptop or your light turns off and the battery runs out), it is highly likely that you will restore the device to work on your own. you can no longer (note: there are devices that can restore the old firmware version; there are which cannot). The laptop will just refuse to turn on ...

In addition, it is impossible to say with 100% certainty how the new firmware will behave (although, if everything is done correctly, in most cases everything is OK).

Now (when all the warnings have been made!) Let's talk about how best to carry out this update ...

Important!

If your device is under warranty - updating the BIOS may become a denial of warranty service!

BIOS update step by step

I will start the article taking into account that you have a fairly modern device not older than 5-7 years (since older laptops, for the most part, do not support updating the BIOS from under Windows, and this complicates things a little ... (about this at the end of the article)).

Determining the exact model of the device

And so, the first thing I would recommend is to go to the official website of the manufacturer of your device and use the function of auto-detecting the laptop model.

For example, on the HP website (after going to the download section of drivers for laptops), it is proposed to determine your model in 2-clicks and automatically find all new software for it (BIOS, drivers, etc.). Other major equipment manufacturers have a similar function: ASUS, Acer, Lenovo, Dell, etc.

Auto-detect device model

Exact device model

If the model device was identified (for accuracy, I recommend checking with the documents and stickers on the device case), then go to the "BIOS" tab and download the required version. As a rule, the firmware is a regular executable exe file (like any other program).

If the manufacturer's website could not automatically determine the model of the device, you can use the special. utilities for viewing the characteristics of the computer. For example, one of the best in this regard, AIDA64 (see screenshot below).

AIDA - View Laptop Model

In addition, you can use the built-in Windows tools:

  • press combination Win + R ;
  • in the "Open" line enter the command dxdiag and click OK.

Win + R - dxdiag

In the window that appears with information about the system, the model of the computer will be indicated (note: in some cases, the exact modification of the device is not indicated, which does not completely solve the problem ...).

Preparation (a few words about the little things)

1) Check the downloaded BIOS version again with your laptop model. Of course, you should only download the firmware from the official website of your device manufacturer!

2) Connect the laptop to the power supply and wait until the battery charge reaches 100% (otherwise, as luck would have it, the network will be disconnected at the time of the update, and the charge will not be enough to complete the operation). By the way, some devices do not allow you to run a BIOS update at all when running on battery power ...

3) It is better to carry out the operation in a quiet evening (when no one is distracting and there are no overloads in the electrical network).

4) Save all open documents, close editors, torrents, games, etc.

5) By the way, I would recommend postponing the update if you have some urgent work on your computer (diploma, report, etc.).You never know ..?

Running ...

Actually, after starting the executable file, the wizard will prompt you to proceed to updating the BIOS (UPDATE). In general, it remains only to agree with this by clicking on NEXT.

By the way, HP also has the ability to create a bootable USB flash drive for installing BIOS on other devices.

UPDATE BIOS (HP laptop)

Then you just need to agree to reboot the device - RESTART NOW (everything else is prepared by the program in auto-mode).

Reboot laptop

After that, the BIOS update will start directly. During this time, DO NOT disconnect the device from the power supply, and in general, it is better not to press any of the buttons ...

By the way, the cooler (s) usually start to make a lot of noise during the update. This is how it should be, everything is fine (note: some just think that they did something wrong and restart the laptop ... which you just can't do!).

Laptop after reboot

Typically, the update time is 5-10 minutes. The progress of the operation is most often shown as a percentage on the screen.

Update operation

Ideally, after a while, you should see a message that the update has been completed (COMPLETE). The laptop will automatically reboot (do not press anything).

Operation completed

Operation completed

After rebooting, the laptop will pre-update and write the new BIOS version and this, in fact, the operation is completed.

After reboot

Then you can enter the BIOS and see its current version (this information can be found in the main tab MAIN). If everything went well, you will see the new firmware version ...

The version has been updated!

If your laptop does not support updating from Windows

In this case, everything becomes somewhat more complicated, since we will have to do some actions in manual mode (moreover, a lot depends on the BIOS version and the specific device model).

Generally speaking, the scheme will be something like this:

1) First, you will need to determine the laptop model, find the firmware for it on the official website and download it. Usually, it has a ROM extension (if it is in the archive - extract it).

2) Next, you need to format the USB flash drive in FAT32 format and write the firmware file to it.

File system FAT32

3) After, restart the laptop, enter the BIOS (usually the F2, Del, or Esc key is used for this) and click on the menu "Start Easy Flash" / "Q-Flash" (depends on the BIOS version, see a couple of examples below).

Start Easy Flash - laptop from ASUS

Q-Flash

4) Next, the special will start. BIOS update utility. You need to tell her that you need to update the BIOS from the flash drive (in the example below, this item looks like "UPDATE BIOS FROM DRIVE"). Then the utility will recheck the firmware and ask you to confirm the operation (for this, use the ENTER key) - after 1-2 minutes. the update operation will be performed.

5) After rebooting, the laptop should boot with the new BIOS version.

That's all for now. Happy work!
