How to shutdown or restart a laptop using the keyboard

Good day everyone!

Sometimes it happens that the mouse (touchpad) stops working and the laptop does not see it (for example, after disconnecting / connecting it).

Also, the cursor can often stop "moving" when the device freezes and malfunctions. In either case, the first thing that most experienced users recommend is to do reboot.

And you have to perform this action using the keyboard (and, as I noticed, many are simply lost, and they themselves almost "freeze", because they are so used to the mouse that they cannot imagine how without it). 👀

Actually, in this short article I want to give several options for how you can turn off (or restart) a laptop (PC) using just a few keyboard shortcuts. I think the article will be useful to all novice users ... 👌

👉 Remark

in one of the previous articles, I pointed out the main reasons why the mouse may not work. You might find it useful!

5 ways to shut down or restart your laptop without a mouse or touchpad

Standard function

I will show using the example of Windows 10 (as the most modern one today). On excellent Windows, the steps are the same.

  1. first you need to press the keyWin on the keyboard ("START" should open);
  2. then using the keysTAB and arrows select the "off" button (), press Enter;

    Start - parameters

  3. then in the list (using the arrows) select Restart / Shutdown (depending on requirements), press Enter.

    Shut down, hibernate or reboot

  4. actually, everything. If everything is in order with the laptop, it will complete the task.

Addition: if there was no reaction to the command above, then your 👉 Windows may be frozen. You can also try the alternative methods described below.

*

From the desktop

In any version of Windows (XP, 7, 8, 10), if you have the desktop open, just press the combination of buttons Alt + F4 (means closing the window, but on the desktop - an alternative function is triggered).

ALT + F4 on the desktop

You should have a small window with a list of what the PC can do. To scroll through the list: use the keyboard arrows (↑, ↓). When you select the action you want, for example "Reboot" , press Enter.

Reboot

In a moment, the laptop should go into reboot ...

With Ctrl + Alt + Del

If the system does not respond to your keystrokes, try Ctrl + Alt + Del (it helps to get out of many problem situations).

A small list should appear, from which you need to select the option "Go out" (use the TAB and arrow keys on your keyboard to select the option you want).

Go out

Then in the right corner of the screen select the icon "Turn off" (), press Enter on it and in the small list that appears, select the desired function (as a rule: restart, shutdown and hibernation).

Approx. : also use the arrows (↑, ↓, →, ←), the TAB key and Enter (↵) to select an option.

Reboot or shutdown

With the help of specials. shutdown commands

  1. press the button combination Win + R (a window should open "Run" in the lower left corner of the screen);
  2. then enter the commandshutdown.exe -r -f -t 20 (reboot after 20 sec.), orshutdown / s / t 60 (shutdown after a minute).

    shutdown.exe -r -f -t 20 (reboot command after 20 sec.)

  3. if the command worked, a small warning window will appear (the screenshot below shows how it looks).

    Your session will be ended

    By the way, I draw your attention to the fact that after the specified time the computer will be restarted (turned off) without warning. Therefore, it must be performed when all open files and documents have been saved!

Emergency shutdown

If the laptop does not respond at all to keystrokes, then you can turn it off only using the button "Inclusions" .

For this it is necessary hold for 5 ÷ 10 seconds - then an emergency shutdown will occur (on some models a faint "squeak" is also heard).

Typical laptop (power button close-up)

By the way, if the laptop does not respond to the power button, then here you can only go to at least: disconnect the laptop from the network and remove the battery. Then it will be 100% de-energized and will not be able to work.

True, such measures should be used carefully, and only in case of various malfunctions (when the device does not perceive any pressing at all).

This concludes the article ...

Happy work!
