Red screen on a PC / laptop monitor - what to do, how to fix it ✔

Good day everyone!

I already had articles on black and blue screens on my blog, and now it's the turn to red ... ✔

The reason for this was the recent update of Windows 10, after which some users have a number of elements on the desktop and explorer windows turned red, see the example in the preview and screenshot below (according to statistics, this is mainly the case with the owners of integrated AMD video cards).

Actually, in this note, I decided to touch upon not only the problem of the last update, but also a number of other reasons leading to the appearance of a red "color" on the screen ...

Note: since every user understands different things under "redness" (and a serious hardware error when turning on the PC, and a "harmless" coloring of the explorer window), I will briefly go over them all (giving a photo as an example for each problem). I think it will be possible to navigate ... 👌

Now what to do ...

Why could a "red screen" appear?

Incorrect Windows 10 update

Several summer updates to Windows 10 have resulted in various performance issues on more than one occasion. One of the last (cumulative update KB4512941) on some systems caused incorrect display of the desktop and explorer windows (part of the window was filled with red, see example below).

What the desktop looks like after update KB4512941

There are three ways to fix this:

  1. uninstall update KB4512941 (optional and does not contain additions to the computer security system). To uninstall - just go to Windows settings (Win + i combination) and go to the update log (see screenshot below;
  2. update the drivers for the video card from the manufacturer's website (AMD has released an update that eliminates this defect);
  3. roll back the system to a previous working state.

Incorrect display in games

In some games, the appearance of red elements on the screen is usually associated with some kind of bugs and flaws (for example, such pirouettes often happened in "World of Tanks" and "Battlefield 3"). How it might look is shown in the screenshot below.

An example of a problem in tanks

The like is "treated" in a series of sequential steps:

  1. removal of mods, patches and other add-ons;
  2. reinstalling the game client;
  3. disabling some effects, shadows, vertical sync (if we are talking about "tanks" - then this should also include the installation of standard graphics);
  4. updating the drivers for the video card (by the way, you don't always need to install the latest ones - it is important to choose the stable version!);
  5. Updating DirectX, NET FrameWork, Visual C ++.

Adjusting the color of the monitor (video card)

If your overall image on the monitor seems to be in color, but slightly gives off a "red-orange" tint (as in my example below), first of all pay attention to the settings of the video card and monitor.

Red and blue shades

If you have installed drivers for the video card: then to open its control panel, just use the tray icon (next to the clock), or right-click anywhere on the desktop (example below).

Next, you need to go to the color settings. In my example, a video card from AMD is presented: the necessary parameters are in the tab "Display / Color" .

Note! Intel HD brightness, contrast and color adjustments are presented in this post.

Display - Color (Radeon Settings)

After that, adjust the color temperature, brightness, saturation, contrast, etc. The hues and the image on the monitor as a whole depend on this.

In addition, if you have a PC or laptop with an external monitor, check also the settings of the monitor itself (use the Settings button on the device case). Alternatively, you can simply reset them ...

Monitor problem

As a rule, if there is a hardware problem with the monitor, there will be "redness" in any applications and programs (even at the boot stage). What's more characteristic: the intensity of the shades in different parts of the screen can be different (a couple of examples are given below).

In general, to diagnose the device, I highly recommend connecting the monitor to another computer or laptop. This will allow you to find out where the problem lies: either in the PC system unit, or in the monitor itself.

A couple of examples of problems with monitors: gradient, and incorrect color reproduction

In addition, you can advise to try resetting the monitor settings to default. As a rule, the factory settings are adjusted more or less in color (and almost never give off redness) ...

Error during boot phase (usually after overclocking)

The "red" screen, as in my example below, is called the death screen (possibly due to the fact that Windows cannot continue to work further, and you, like it or not, you need to restart the device).

As a rule, it occurs in most cases due to attempts to overclock the CPU (video card), and the first recommendation in this case is to reset the frequencies and return the BIOS settings to their default state.

Red screen of death at boot stage

If that doesn't work, try the following:

  1. carefully check the condition of the loops: are they all intact, are they tightly connected;
  2. roll back the system using a checkpoint (if it did not work, try restoring the bootloader);
  3. check the RAM, test it;
  4. try to boot the system in safe mode (if you installed any application before the "red screen" appears, uninstall it);
  5. follow the recommendations from the article about the blue screen of death;
  6. if some system files are damaged, only reinstalling the OS helps to solve the problem (by the way, this can be done without losing data).

Selecting the appropriate Windows theme

Some users, inadvertently changing the theme (or installing some application for Windows design), later notice that some of the elements have become too contrasting (for example, red-pink, crimson, etc.). Of course, this is not always convenient, and often interferes with concentration ... 👇

This is also called red ...

To fix this, just go to settings personalization (right click on the desktop, relevant for Windows 10).

Personalization (right click anywhere on the desktop)

Next, change the color scheme and choose a classic theme (see example below).

Note: by the way, you can go to Windows settings using the keyboard shortcut Win + i.

Ripples and red stripes on the screen (artifacts)

If, in addition to redness, you notice ripples, stripes, some kind of distortion on the screen, this is a very alarming sign, often it is associated with a hardware malfunction of the PC.

Note: Such distortions on the screen are called artifacts.

I already had a blog post on this topic. In order not to repeat myself here, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with: //ocomp.info/ryab-i-polosyi-na-ekrane.html
