Skype: failed to establish connection [error]

User question

Good day.

Please tell me, Skype worked great for many years, but recently some kind of nightmare has begun. I updated the system to Windows 10 and reinstalled Skype - the error "could not establish a connection" started to appear.

I cleaned the system, reinstalled the program to the latest version - nothing helped. I switched back to seven (editor's note: Windows 7) - an error began to appear that it was impossible to connect. What kind of curse is this?

Hello!

I don't know how to remove curses, but with Skype this happens for a number of reasons (I had to deal with it myself many times). In this article I will give all the most basic things that need to be checked and corrected to solve such an error.

Hope you can solve the problem!

What to do if Skype fails to connect

Password and login, program status

Despite the banality, be sure to check your login credentials. Many people simply forget their password and enter incorrect values. Also, it is possible that your password is entered in the wrong language (look in the tray - whether the layout is active ).

In addition, pay attention to the status of the program. On the official website page (here it is - //support.skype.com/ru/status/) you can find out how various Skype functions work: calls to mobile and landline phones, messaging, sending multimedia, etc. Ideally, there should be a "Normal operation" message next to each item.

Internet does not work

Perhaps the problem with the Internet connection is one of the most common. For example, your router could be disconnected or rebooted, an interruption at your Internet provider could have occurred, a high load on the network simply appeared and there are large packet losses ...

In general, to begin with, pay attention to the Internet connection icon on the Windows taskbar - if an exclamation mark (red cross, etc.) is lit on it, then the problem is obvious.

An example of an error, when hovering over the Wi-Fi icon, Windows reports that it has no internet access ...

Just try to open some site in the browser, see if it loads ...

I also recommend that you read one of my articles on checking network speed, the link below.

Old version of Skype

Another very popular reason is the use of old versions of the program (which can no longer connect to the server). Many people deliberately do not update Skype as they are used to a specific version. Moreover, in modern versions, the design actually (in my opinion) does not look the best way.

By the way, many users simply do not even think about it - they downloaded the installation file of the program once, saved it to disk and for years when reinstalling the program, they use this file ...

To find out which version of Skype is the newest for the current day, you can do this:

  1. go to the official website of the program: //www.skype.com/ru/get-skype/;
  2. then click on the link "Download Skype for Windows" : when the download window appears (or offers to save) - you will see the name of the file with the program version (see screen, 8.4).

Downloading the latest version of Skype

In general, I recommend the following procedure:

  1. compare the versions of your installed program with the latest available on the official website;
  2. if the program is outdated, remove it completely from your computer. The best to resort to special software, described in detail how and what, here: //ocomp.info/programma-dlya-udaleniya-programm.html;
  3. then download and install the latest version of Skype (link to the official website is given above).

 ❹

Firewall / antivirus is blocking the connection

In some cases, Skype cannot establish a connection due to a firewall (or antivirus), which simply blocks the program from working. Therefore, while checking and searching for the causes of the problem, turn off the antivirus and the built-in Windows firewall.

Disable Avast antivirus for 1 hour (as an example)

Note: to disable the built-in Windows firewall - go to the control panel in the section: System and Security \ Windows Firewall .

Then just disable it using the link on the left in the menu (see screenshot below).

Enable / Disable Windows Firewall / Control Panel in Windows 10

❺

Virus Infection (Modifying the Hosts File)

If all the previous insinuations have not yielded any result (which is strange), your system may be infected with some kind of virus (adware, etc.). I recommend that you check your computer completely not only with a classic antivirus, but also with third-party programs (I give a link to the instructions below).

Instructions! How to remove viruses from your computer if the antivirus does not see them - //ocomp.info/esli-antivirus-ne-vidit-virusov.html

There is one more thing.

Perhaps the virus is not already on your computer, but it could have managed to spoil the system file hosts (note: many antiviruses do not restore the PC when disinfecting) Meanwhile, it has a big impact on networking. You can find a link to instructions on how to restore it below.

Old cache and data (appdata needs to be cleared)

When reinstalling Skype (especially if you did not uninstall the program using special utilities), the system folder with some program configuration files is not always cleared. Therefore, I recommend trying to clean it. For this:

  1. close Skype;
  2. press the button combination Win + R - a window should open "Run" ;
  3. then enter the command: % appdata% \ skype and click OK;

    Open the folder with the configuration files

  4. in the opened folder, delete all files and folders, then start Skype. The problem should be fixed ...

    Delete all unnecessary items from the folder!

 ❼

Server unavailability

Sometimes, the Skype server crashes, and then it is not possible to establish a connection with it not only to you, but also to hundreds and thousands of other users. This, of course, does not happen often, but it does happen 👀.

Usually, if there is such a problem, you can find out about it on the official website, and the approximate recovery time will also be indicated there. Also, as an option, ask if your acquaintances and friends have any connection problems.

Update from 2019.

It is possible that some Skype IP addresses were blacklisted by your Internet provider and now it is unavailable for you (this was at one time when Telegram was actively blocked). Try using a VPN ...

For Windows 10 users

If we are talking about Windows 10 (especially for those who use old releases and do not update them), then I recommend trying the following "recipe":

  1. first uninstall all previous versions of Skype (including manually checking the folder where Skype was installed earlier so that nothing is left);
  2. then download and install from the official website (//www.skype.com/ru/get-skype/) the latest version of Skype (currently v.8.4);
  3. then exit or collapse it;
  4. then go to the site //account.microsoft.com/account/skype (in a single Microsoft account);
  5. enter in username and password, log in;
  6. confirm the account to any mailbox;
  7. log out and log in to Skype again;
  8. enter your username, password - everything should work!

That's all for today. Additions on the topic are welcome!

Good connection everyone!
