How to find out the speed of the Internet on a computer ▃▅▆

User question

Hello!

Tell me, I connected to the Internet from the "xxx" provider (cut by censorship 👌). They promised a speed of 50 Mbit / s, but the real speed when downloading files does not rise above 1 Mbyte / s. The provider says that they have everything in order with the network.

Tell me, what could be the matter, how to find out the real Internet speed on a PC?

All the best!

Probably, almost every third person is not happy with the speed of their Internet - it's like with money, there is never much, the more - the more you want ... ✌

In general, this question is quite extensive and you cannot answer it with a single link (especially since many users confuse basic concepts, without which it is rather difficult to talk about speed).

In this article, I will consider how to check your internet speed and find out real speed (not to be confused with the declared one!). In addition, I will consider a couple of related issues, without which neither there nor here.

Internet speed check ▃▅▆

Difference in speed between Mbps and Mbps

This is the first place to start this article (in my opinion). The fact is that almost EVERYTHING Internet providers indicate the speed when connected in Mbps(for example, a connection with a speed of up to 40 Mbps) .

While the programs in which you download something (torrents, browsers, etc.), the data is shown in a different value: MB / s (KB / s).

Mbps ≠ Mbps

(very different values)

40 Mbps ≈ 5 Mbps

(maximum real speed, when connected to the Internet at a speed of 40 Mbps)

A couple of very popular questions follow from the above.

What is 1 Mbit / s, how to translate the connection speed into the download speed?

Generally, 8 Bits = 1 Byte... If now we discard high-precision mathematical calculations and go to the everyday level, then 8 Mbit / s ≈1 Mbyte / s (subtract 7-12% from this for the transfer of service information, and you will get the real Internet speed).

For instance, you are promised a connection speed of up to 20 Mbps. By the way, pay attention to the DO prefix (this means in reality the speed will be lower. This can be seen in almost all Internet providers).

Thus, we consider 20 Mbit / s / 8 ≈ 2.5 Mbyte / s. But you still need to subtract 7-12% from this number for the transfer of service information, so the maximum real speed that you will get by connecting to this provider will be about 2-2.3 MB / s (exactly the one that you see in the browser when downloading).

Why don't ISPs write speed in MB / s?

It seems to me that there are two reasons. First, the higher the number, the better for advertising purposes. Imagine what looks better: 5 MB / s or 50 Mbit / s? You will lose in advertising ⇒ fewer clients ⇒ less profit.

The second is to indicate the download speed in MB / s is not entirely correct, because at the time of downloading the network is busy not only downloading the file itself, but also transferring service information ...

Download speed and upload speed. A few words about ping

Usually, when checking the speed of the Internet, any test will provide you with at least three parameters: download speed (sometimes called incoming), upload (outgoing), and ping.

  • Difference between uploading a file and uploading it ... During download - you download a file from the server (usually, this is what most people mean by Internet speed). During checkout - you send the file to the server. Often, for various reasons, the upload speed is higher than the download speed;
  • Ping - this is the time it takes for a packet from you to reach another PC (server), and you receive a response from it. And the shorter this time, the better.
  • If on the Internet you only watch videos and read Internet pages, then on ping, you, in principle does not matter... But for fans of computer games, this is a very important indicator.With a high ping, you can only play a very limited list of games (perhaps only turn-based strategies).

By the way, I also want to add that ping (as well as the download speed) can be completely different on different servers: on one ping will be 50 ms, on the other 500 ms!

An article about ping - we put all the dots from A to Z (including: how to lower the high ping, what it depends on and how to find it out).

What is the declared connection speed in Windows

Before rather than starting directly with speed tests, I recommend looking at the properties of the current connection in Windows to find out what you can count on in general.

It is possible that the low speed of the Internet is not connected with the provider, but, for example, with the router (for example, if it is in the far room from you, then the signal may be bad and the speed is low).

The first thing we do is open network connections ... For this:

  1. press the button combination Win + R to bring up a window "Run" ;
  2. enter command ncpa.cpl and press Enter .

ncpa.cpl - View all network connections

Next, you should open the Network Connections tab, as in the screenshot below (by the way, you can also open it from the Windows Control Panel: Control Panel \ Network and Internet \ Network Connections).

Then select an active network connection (as a rule, it is "colored" and there are no red crosses on it) , click on it with the right mouse button and select "Condition" (as in the screenshot below).

Network status // Windows 10

In the window that opens, you will see the connection speed - in my example, it was 72.2 Mbps. Those. in the best case, you can count on about 7-8 MB / s of the actual speed at which you can download files.

Important! What to do before checking and testing?

To make the test readings objective and more accurate, it is recommended to do the following:

  1. Download all swinging files at the moment (or pause downloading);
  2. Pause updating of antiviruses, programs, including Windows;
  3. It is also recommended to close all programs that heavily load the network, the processor. You can find out about such software through Task Manager - to call it press Ctrl + Shift + Esc ... Next, sort the list of processes depending on the load on the network (processor). For example, the screenshot below shows that uTorrent is currently downloading data, and can greatly affect the test results! It is recommended that you close such an application.

    Download uTorrent network

Actually, now you can start the main thing - checking!

►Online speed tests

👉 Important! For the services below to work properly, you must have installed Adobe Flash Player... If it is outdated (or does not work) for you, I recommend updating it.

Site: //beta.speedtest.net/ru

Probably one of the most famous sites for testing internet speed. Russian-speaking, simple and fast. All you need to do is press one button "Test" .

For the service to work, you need a plug-in in the browser - Adobe Flash Player (usually installed automatically, if not - see the link above).

Results presented: Ping 3 ms; Download 30.35 Mbps; Download 34.68 Mbps.

Results in beta.speedtest.net/en

Website: //2ip.ru/speed/

Simple, Russian, fast service for testing Internet speed: incoming and outgoing speeds are checked. By the way, the test results can be shared, for this a special is formed on the website (after the test). link.

Checking on the website 2IP.ru

Website: //www.speed.io/

A good solid service that will check and give an objective assessment of the speed of your network in a minute. In addition, the ping will also be checked. To start testing, you just need to press one button "Start Speed Test" ... The browser must have a plug-in from Adobe Flash installed.

The results are presented in the form of a convenient small plate (as in the figure below).

Results from speed.io service

Site: //yandex.ru/internet/

A very concise service for checking the Internet, nothing superfluous: just one button to start the test (no ads, no links, no recommendations).

An example of the test results is shown below, there is also nothing superfluous in them.By the way, there is a link to share the test results with other users on the network.

Internet speed // check results on the Yandex website

Website: //www.wellink.ru/

Internet speed compliance check from WELLINK. To start the test: you need to enter the declared speed of your connection (which the provider promised you), and press just one button "WiTest" .

The test time is one minute. After the check, you will find out the download and upload speed (see example of check results below).

►Verification using torrent programs

Just as objective download speed you can use torrent programs (for example, the same uTorrent).

For objective measurement you need:

  1. close all extraneous programs that load your network (you can learn about them from task manager );
  2. select and put on download any popular file (preferably several gigabytes in size), which are distributed by several thousand seeders (the bigger, the better);
  3. when the file will be loaded, select it (see arrows 1, 2 in the screenshot below), then open the tab "Information" and see average reception rate ... Basically, this is the objective download speed.
  4. By the way, you can also watch the speed online when the file is being downloaded (see rectangle-4 in the screenshot below 👇).

uTorrent - download speed

True, in this way you cannot find out your ping, and also you will not check and you will not get the objective speed of return (outgoing).

This concludes the article. High speed everyone!

Good luck!
