How to open Disk Management (Windows built-in utility for formatting and partitioning disks)

Good day!

Not all users know that most versions of Windows have a built-in utility for formatting and partitioning drives. It is called "Disk Management" ... And, unfortunately, in my opinion, it is somehow hidden from view, although it is extremely useful in many cases ...

For example, you bought a new disk, connected it, went to "My computer" - but nothing new has appeared there ... This happens all the time, tk. new disks, as a rule, are not formatted and the explorer does not show them.

In this case, many users start looking for specialized utilities for formatting disks (they waste time, money ...). In fact, it is enough to run "Disk Management" , format this new HDD - and wow, everything starts working as it should!

In this small note I will show you how you can easily and simply run this utility (in different versions of Windows).

The ways

Universal (works on Windows 7/8/10)

1) First you need to open the task manager (the combination of the buttons Ctrl + Shift + Esc or Ctrl + Alt + Del).

2) Then click on the menu "File / new task" , into line "Open" enter the command diskmgmt.msc and click OK. An example is in the screenshot below.

diskmgmt.msc - command to open disk management

3) After the utility will start "Disk Management" (by the way, with administrator rights).

Open!

Via the START menu

If you have Windows 10 installed, then everything is even easier: just right-click (RMB) on the START menu and select the desired utility from the menu that appears (see example below).

RMB on the START menu

Alternative option: click on the icon "Magnifiers" on the taskbar (search), enter "Control ..." in the search box and open "Computer Management" .

Computer Management / Search

After in the menu on the left, select the tab "Disk Management" ... By the way, this method is more universal - it gives you immediate access to the task scheduler, event viewer, device manager, etc.

Computer Management - Disk Management

Through the control panel

Option 1

Open the Windows Control Panel, go to the section "System and safety" and click on the link "Creating and formatting hard disk partitions" (located in the "Administration" section). An example is shown in the screenshot below.

Option 2

In the control panel, you first need to switch the display mode to "Large icons" ... Then go to the section "Administration" .

Administration

After open "Computer Management" .

And in the menu on the left, select the desired utility ... (example below).

PS

If using "Disk Management" the issue with the drives could not be solved - you may need specialized programs for splitting and formatting the HDD. I once mentioned about them in one of the previous notes: //ocomp.info/programmyi-dlya-rabotyi-s-hdd.html

That's all for now ...

Good luck!
