Windows 10: how to set a password for an account

Good day everyone!

Even if the computer does not have codes for foreign accounts and bank deposits, it is still unpleasant for each of us when someone, by chance or out of curiosity, looks at what we are doing on it. 👀

In order for only you to work with the system, Windows 10 provides password access (i.e. if you do not enter the previously set code, the system will simply not allow you to work).

Actually, it will take a couple of minutes to set such a password. This is what today's article will be about ...

👉 Recommendation!

By the way, if your Windows 10 OS starts to slow down, then try cleaning it from debris and optimizing the settings. Now this is easily done with the help of special utilities.

Setting a password for an account

Account setup

The first thing to do is open the User Accounts window. Moreover, I note that in Windows 10 it was not exactly hidden, but made less "noticeable" than it was in Windows XP.

And so how to open:

  1. press the button combination WIN + R (the "Run" window should appear);
  2. enter command control userpasswords2 (see screenshot below);
  3. press Enter.

How to open the user accounts setup

Next, a window should open with all the users who are in the system. In my case, there is only one user - "USER" (he is also an administrator).

To make Windows 10 require a password, check the box next to "Require username and password." (see number-1 on the screenshot below 👇).

Then, to change / set the password for the current user (under which you are currently working) - press the key combination Ctrl + Alt + Del (see number-2 👇).

Password entry ...

Next, the desktop should disappear, and a small menu will appear on the whole screen - select the item "Change Password" .

change password / Ctrl + Alt + Del

Then a small window will appear in which you need to:

  1. enter the old password (if it was not there before - just leave the field blank);
  2. enter a new password twice (specify the one that you will not forget 👌);
  3. to confirm the changes - press ENTER.

Entering the old (if installed) and new password

If the password has been changed - you will see a message about the successful completion of the operation - click OK.

Actually, that's it, now your system is protected, you can check the functionality (just restart your PC).

Password has been changed

Another option through the START menu

You can also set a password through the START menu (although in some cases it is still safer to use the first method, since it is not always possible to change the password through the Windows 10 control panel).

Let me show you with an example. First open START, select "Parameters" .

START - Parameters

Next, you need to open the section "Accounts" , and select a subsection in it Login Options .

Accounts - Login Options

In the window that opens, you can change (set) both a regular password and, for example, put a PIN-code or a pattern (password in the form of a picture). In general, there are plenty of options. 👌

Change password (note that you can put a PIN and pattern).

When changing the password, you will be asked to first specify the old one, then enter the new one, and confirm the changes (in general, the procedure is standard).

IF YOU WANT TO DISABLE PASSWORD

1) Go to START / Options / Accounts / Login Options and press the button "Change Password" .

Next, a window will open with the input of the current password (enter) and a proposal to enter a new password - just leave the fields blank and click "Further" ("Finish").

Thus, when Windows starts up, you just need to click on "Login" and the OS will boot without entering a password.

2) If you want to turn off the display of the password entry window altogether, then click Win + R, and enter the command control userpasswords2 (as in the examples above).

Next, in the account settings window that opens -take off tick off the item "Require username and password" (see screenshot below). Save your settings.

Do not require password

Now, when Windows boots up, it will not open a window and ask you to confirm who logs in to the system ✌ ...

👉 Supplement!

I recommend that you read a similar article, which tells how to protect a file or USB flash drive (disk) with a password. In some cases, such protection is much more effective than a password for entering the OS.

This is the kind of security it is ...

Good luck!
