How to disable updates in Windows 10 (they install themselves when you restart your computer)

User question

Good day. Tell me how you can limit the appetites of Windows 10 (Pro version, 32 bits). The fact is that she downloads and installs updates without my knowledge (but it's not that scary).

The main thing that is terribly annoying is that it installs them when I turn on (restart) the computer and hope to quickly do something. As a result, you have to wait 10-30 minutes. while the system is updated. Is it possible to disable these updates altogether (enable them only when I want to).

PS: I climbed in the control panel, set it up - it did not help ...

Hello.

In fact, if earlier in Windows XP, 7 - it was quite easy to postpone the launch of updates (a simple setting in the control panel was enough) - then in Windows 10 everything became not so simple: updates are installed in a forced automatic order 👀.

On the one hand, Microsoft takes care of its OS, protecting users from "unnecessary" problems, on the other hand, I myself came across a couple of times when I urgently needed to turn on the computer, but I had to watch a blue screen with a request to wait until the end of their installation ...

And so, below I will consider several ways how to solve this problem ... 👌

👉 Important!

Despite the methods below, I personally do not recommend that you disable updates permanently and never check for them.

I think that it is much better and more expedient to disable "this compulsion" and calmly use a PC / laptop, but from time to time manually check their presence and start the update process (when it does not interfere with your work).

Ways to turn off updates in Windows 10

Method number 1: through the group policy editor

This method is one of the most effective! Helps resolve unplanned updates completely. True, I want to note right away that this method is suitable for those who have Windows 10 Pro and higher (in the home version (ie home) - it will not work. But in principle, you can try ...).

1) First you need to open the Group Policy Editor. To do this, press the combination of buttons Win + R, enter the command gpedit.msc and click the OK button.

gpedit.msc - launch the group policy editor

2) Next, you need to open the tab "Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update" (see arrow 1 in the screenshot below).

This tab should have a parameter "Configuring Automatic Updates" - open it with a double click of the mouse (see arrow 2 on the screenshot below).

Windows Update - Automatic Updates Setting (Clickable)

3) In the window that opens, select "Included" , and in the settings select "Allow local administrator to select options" (as in my screenshot below). Be sure to save these settings by clicking on the OK button!

Enabled, allow local admin to select options

4) Actually, that's all! 👌

To check, you can go to the menu "Start / Settings / Updates and Security" - an inscription should appear that your organization is managing the updates. What was required to be proved, now there will be nothing forced and automatic!

Method number 2: disabling the Windows Update service

This is also a pretty effective way, its essence is that we can prevent the Windows Update service from starting (Russian: Update Center), that is, manually disable it. Thus, the service will not start, and nothing extra will be downloaded and installed automatically.

By the way, this method works in all versions of Windows 10: home, corporate, professional.

And this is how it's done:

  1. First you need to open the list of services in Windows. To do this, press the combination of buttons Win + R , enter the command services.msc and press Enter ... An example of how this is done is shown in the screenshot below.

    services.msc - list of services

  2. then find in the list of services Windows Update and open it (note: if you have an English version of Windows, look for "Windows Update") ;

    Windows Update

  3. finishing touch: 1 - set the startup type to "Disabled", 2 - press the "Stop" button (for the service to stop its work), 3 - save the settings (see the screen below). Thus, the service responsible for the auto-update of the system is disabled, and now it should not bother you with "blue" screens (at the wrong time) anymore!

Method number 3: using special utilities

In general, various utilities for blocking and prohibiting updates have grown like mushrooms after rain ... One of which I use myself - I will recommend here. This is aboutWin Updates Disabler.

Note! The method is also suitable: for all versions of Windows 10.

Win Updates Disabler

Softportal: //www.softportal.com/get-42359-win-updates-disabler.html

Official site: //www.site2unblock.com (did not open when the article was published)

A small utility with only 4 options: disable update, defender, firewall, security center. The utility supports several languages (including Russian), there is a portable version that does not need to be installed.

Works on both 32-bit systems and 64.

Actually, after launching the utility, you just have to select the checkboxes that you need to disable and press one button "Apply" .

Utility operation

Next, you need to restart your computer. And, in fact, that's all - to enjoy life ...

Restart your PC for the changes to take effect

Method number 4: using registry settings

The method should work in all versions of Windows 10 (at least it worked!). By the way, some users note that after a while Windows 10 may "overwrite" those settings that we will now create and configure in the registry.

And so, let's get down to business ...

1) First you need to open the registry editor: to do this, press the combination of buttons WIN + R , enter the command regedit , press Enter.

Open the registry editor through the run window

2) Next, open the section: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows

3) In this section, create another section and name it WindowsUpdate (just right-click in the menu on the left and select the one you need in the menu that appears. Working with the registry as with an explorer).

Create a WindowsUpdate section

4) Then create another subsection AU In chapter WindowsUpdate.

Get an address of the form: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \ WindowsUpdate \ AU

5) Further in the section AU (which we created a little earlier) create a DWORD parameter (32 bits) and name it AUOptions(to create a parameter - just right-click on any free space on the right side of the registry window) .

Creating the AUOptions parameter

6) Value 5 in parameter AUOptions will mean the refusal of updates and notifications of their availability.

Value 2 in parameter AUOptions will mean that the system should notify you about the availability of updates, but not install them automatically.

Addition: if you have Windows 10 64 bits, then you need to complete steps 3-6 in another registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Wow6432Node \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows

Method number 5: using metered connection

The thing is, Windows 10 has a special option "Limit connection" - it was made for those users who do not have unlimited Internet.

The bottom line is that the system does not download updates (saves traffic) when this option is activated. Actually, a little later in the article I will consider how to enable it for your Wi-Fi network.

Note! Works also on all versions of Windows 10.

  1. First, open the START menu and go to the OS parameters.

    START - parameters

  2. Next, open the section "Network and Internet" .

    Windows Settings - Wi-Fi Network

  3. Then open the "Wi-Fi" (wireless connection) section, at the bottom of the settings page, click on the "Additional parameters" link. And, in fact, it remains only to switch the slider to the position "On" .

    Limit connection

    Thus, while your Internet "goes" through such a limited connection, the update system will not download.

Method number 6: using the Windows 10 LTSC version

Update from 12/28/2019

In addition to the above methods of changing the "fine" settings of the system, you can solve the issue more radically ... 👌

There is such a version of Windows 10 as LTSC - this is a "stripped down" version of the Enterprise OS (released by Microsoft itself, that is, everything is official!).

👉 Help! Where and how to download Windows 10 LTSC - //ocomp.info/windows-10-ltsc.html

Windows 10 LTSC: screenshot of the START menu and desktop

Its main difference is that it only downloads the most important security updates (and rarely does it), and a number of elements have been stripped out of it:

  1. Microsoft Store;
  2. Microsoft Edge browser (there is Internet Explore);
  3. Windows Ink Workspace;
  4. Cortana;
  5. Game mode, night lighting, etc.

Personal impressions from its use are the most positive! I recommend to meet you ...

Method number 7: postpone the update until later

Windows 10 has a "gentle" update mode - it will not interfere and annoy you so much. To do this, you just need to put one check mark in the update center settings - "Postpone" .

Note!

If you delay updates, new Windows features won't download or install for several months. Deferred updates do not include security updates. Please note that in this case, you will not be able to get the latest Windows features as soon as they become available.

To do this, first open the Windows 10 settings (via the START menu). Next, you need to open the section "Update and Security" (see screenshot below).

Updates and security

Then in the tab Windows Update open the link at the bottom of the page "Extra options" .

Extra options

Next, check the box next to Postpone receiving feature updates ... On this, it seems like, everything ... 👌

I hope the information from the article came in handy ...

By the way, if you know other methods, then thanks in advance for the addition!

Good luck!
