How to enable and configure voice search from Yandex and Google. What to do if voice search isn't working

Good hour!

It's no joke to say, but now a computer (phone) can perform many simple tasks by recognizing your voice!

For example, you can ask him about the weather or the dollar rate - and he will tell you the answer: "Temperature -7 ° C, north wind 2-3 m / s ...".

The work is structured like this: you speak the required request into the microphone, then it is translated into text and Yandex (for example) searches for the necessary information using it, and then reads it out to you.

However, it is not always so easy to set up "this thing" and voice search may not work. Actually, today in a note we will consider what and in what sequence needs to be checked on a PC and phone to eliminate this problem ... 👌

Setting up voice search

How to enable it (Yandex / Google)

On a Windows computer

And so, opening any browser and going to the main Yandex page (for example) - you can see a small microphone icon (see the picture below 👇). To start voice search - you need to click on it with LMB.

Next, a notification will pop up in the browser asking for permission to access the microphone (it is recommended to allow it).

Allow access to microphone

Then you can say what you want to find into the microphone.

Speak!

If you said clearly and used common words, then the service will easily recognize your voice, translate it into text and find the answer to your request. Conveniently?!

Search made!

As for Google, everything is the same here. On the right, in the search bar, there is also a small microphone icon ... 👇

On an Android phone

In my opinion, this function is much more necessary on a phone than on a PC (firstly, it does not have a comfortable full-size keyboard; secondly, it often has to be typed in not very comfortable conditions ...).

If we are talking about a regular search in a browser, then everything is done in the same way as on a PC. You also need to open a browser and click on the microphone icon. Then the search engine will present you with the results it found and say the answer to your question. 👇

Google told automatically about the weather

However, if you want to fully control your phone using your voice (and not just to enter a query in the search bar), then you need to go to the "Google" application (pre-installed on your smartphone) and enable the "OK Google" function in the settings.

Google - settings

Note: see the "Voice match" settings section.

Turn on OK Google

Now you can give a command to your smartphone even when it is turned off. It's worth noting that Google is good at voice recognition and can tell your team apart from anyone else's!

By the way, the Yandex service has something similar called "Alice". In general, this "thing" resembles a personal assistant built on artificial intelligence. "Alice" can find movies and cartoons, open any of the applications, search for information in search engines, etc.

Windows

Most often this is due to the inaccessibility of the microphone due to privacy settings (and in this Windows 10 succeeded ... 👌).

Therefore, the first tip is to check if the browser is not prohibited from using the microphone. To do this, open the Windows settings (via START or combination Win + i), go to the section "Privacy / Voice Features" and turn on voice recognition. The screen is below. 👇

Windows Settings - Voice Features

Also look at the tab "Microphone" : it has a list of applications, opposite each of which you can allow / deny access to the microphone. Check that the next to the browser you are using is "On" .

After that, pay attention to the browser - it can also block the work with the microphone.Usually, at the same time, a microphone icon with a red cross appears in the address bar (see screenshot below) - if you click on it with LMB, you can give permission to use the device ...

Block access to microphone

Well, I can't help but advise you to double-check the operation of the microphone in other applications. For example, this can be done in the Windows sound settings (to open them - press Win + R, and use the commandmmsys.cpl) .

mmsys.cpl - sound settings

In the tab "Record" all connected microphones will be displayed. Check that the correct device is selected by default, and also check how you are heard ...

How to check the microphone on headphones: I can't be heard at all ...

Android

The telephone voice control system (and similar derivatives) began to develop actively around 2014. If we talk about "OK Google" (as the most popular voice assistant and search), then most often the problem lies due to incorrect software parameters.

In general, for a start, I would recommend going through the points below ... 👇

1) Check and make sure your microphone is working at all. For example, is it possible to hear you well when making calls, is it possible to make a sound recording, etc.

2) Look at the characteristics of your phone. At a minimum, it must meet the following requirements:

  • Android 4.4+ version;
  • the current version of the "Google" application (link to update on the Play Market);
  • in the settings of the "Google" application, the possibility of voice search must be enabled (more on this below).

3) Go to the "Google" settings in the section "Voice input / Voice match" and check to be allowed access to "OK Google" .

4) After that, overwrite your voice sample (performed in the same tab).

5) Next, in the "Google" settings, also check the installed "Language and Region" (must be "Russian" ...).

6) Well, also double-check your Internet connection. It is possible that the Internet connection is not stable and constantly breaks (in fact, this is why voice search does not work ...).
