How to put your computer to sleep (standby) with buttons and hotkeys / hibernate in less than 1 sec.

Good day!

Using hibernation (sometimes called waiting ) allows in some cases to significantly speed up work on a PC / laptop (and also to extend the "life" of the device). In fact, what's the point of turning off your PC if you walked away for half an hour during your lunch break? 👀

In general, in Windows, there are specials in the START menu. button to put the device to sleep. However, not in all versions of the OS it is convenient to use it (especially on a laptop, when there is no mouse at hand for operational work).

Of course, you can also send the computer to sleep using a keyboard shortcut (which you can set yourself). This, in fact, will be today's note ...

👉 Pay attention!

Besides the regime sleep there is also hibernation (they are often confused with each other).

Hibernation - this is a special. PC shutdown mode, in which all RAM contents are saved to the system file hiberfil.sys (i.e. in hibernation mode, the PC can be disconnected from the power supply, but not in sleep mode!).

3 ways to put your computer to sleep

Option 1: with the help of special. utilities

Perhaps this option is the simplest, fastest, most versatile and convenient! We are talking about such a utility as 👉 Volume 2 (which I already recommended in a note on sound tuning).

Firstly, after installation, it neatly "lodges" in the tray and allows 1-2 clicks of the mouse to change active audio devices, adjust their volume, etc.

And secondly, in its settings there is a section with "hot keys" on which you can "hang" almost anything: sleep mode, shutdown, restart, open the drive, change brightness, volume, etc. etc. (screenshots below 👇).

Configuring hotkeys

Shortcut keys for everything!

Of course, the keyboard shortcuts (set in Volume 2) work in all applications and games, no matter where you press them!

Option 2: with the help of special. shortcut (works by "hot" combination)

1) First of all, you need to create a shortcut - for this, just click in any free space of the right mouse window (RMB) and select it ... (in my example, I will create it on the desktop).

Create shortcut

2) Copy the following to the object location line:

C: \ Windows \ System32 \ rundll32.exe PowrProf.dll, SetSuspendState

Way

3) Next, you need to give a name to the shortcut - it can be anything, but I would recommend to name it so that later it will not be confused with the rest ...

Name

4) After, you need to open properties this shortcut (just right-click on it ...).

Shortcut properties

5) In the tab "Label" : move cursor to line "Quick call" (click on it with LMB), and set the desired keyboard shortcut. In my example, I indicated Ctrl + Alt + Z... Then save your changes.

Quick call - specify the keyboard shortcut

Everything!

Now pressing Ctrl + Alt + Z - the computer / laptop immediately goes to sleep (almost instantly). Conveniently?!

6) By the wayif you want Windows to ask for a password after sleep mode, set it in the User Account Control tab (to call it, press Win + R and use the Netplwiz command). See screenshot below.

Option 3: change the power button (Power) to sleep (Sleep)

By default, the power button (or Power) is used to turn off the computer (only in some laptops it puts the device to sleep).

Of course, with some simple settings, you can make any PC / laptop go to sleep using this button. Actually, below are a couple of screenshots of how this is done ...

1) First you need to 👉 open the control panel and go to the tab "Hardware and Sound / Power Supply" .

Hardware and Sound - Power Supply

2) Then open the tab Power Button Actions (in the menu on the left).

Power button actions

3) After specifying what action should be performed when the power button is pressed (in our case, "Sleep", see the example in the screenshot below).

Power Button Action

It remains only to save the settings and check ...

PS

On some PCs / laptops, there is "one" problem: the device itself can wake up from sleep mode. Of course, this is not good ...

To eliminate this "defect", I recommend that you read one of my past notes.

That's all for today ... Additions on the topic - will come in handy!

Good luck!
