Laptop is warming up: what to do? Temperature is high all the time: 85 ° C +

User question

Hello.

Help with HP laptop. It has been making a lot of noise lately, sometimes it freezes. I also noticed that the case on the left (where the air comes out) became warm (it was always cold before). Set a program to control the temperature as it goes up to 85 ° C and the red wax lights up. sign - I turn it off.

Is it possible to do something about overheating on your own (without going to the service) so as not to waste money? In addition, I am afraid to send my laptop for repair, I have all the passwords on my hard drive (including those from Internet banks).

Hello.

The problem of overheating in laptops is quite common (a compact case, coupled with a powerful filling, does their job). By the way, I note that gaming laptops are more susceptible to all this.

👉 How to take your equipment in for repair so that no one gets your passwords ->

In this article I will give all the most basic things that you can do on your own (at home) to reduce the temperature of a laptop. I also note that this issue can often be solved free of charge (at least temporarily).

And so, let's start with all this in order ...

How to lower the temperature. Causes of laptop overheating

Signs of overheating. How to find out the current temperature of laptop components

To begin with, I recommend one of the utilities - AIDA 64 , which will help you find out the current temperature of the processor, video card, hard drive, mat. laptop motherboards. Most often, overheating is associated with processor and video card - therefore attention to them first of all!

👉 The best utilities for viewing laptop characteristics (including AIDA 64)

AIDA 64 - Computer, sensors - see temperatures

Please note that the temperature of the components is constantly changing, depending on the load on the device.

Therefore, if you suspect overheating, it is recommended to simply minimize AIDA 64 and go about your business on the device (and not close the utility).

From time to time, check the temperature readings in the utility, especially when there is a lot of noise from coolers, etc. This way you will find out how far the temperature reaches under load, and you will have time to take action.

What other external signs can you tell about laptop overheating?

  1. in games or video editors, the laptop may simply turn off. This happens due to the fact that the protection system is triggered - it turns off the device so that nothing burns out;
  2. distortion of the picture: stripes, ripples, various artifacts. Most often occurs in games. Reason: a problem with the video card (including overheating);
  3. frequent freezes and reboots of the device;
  4. noise and hum from the fans: the fact is that when the temperature rises, they need to work harder in order to have time to "expel" hot air from the device case (because of this, the noise becomes louder). Please note: if the laptop did not make noise before, but now it has started, the reason may be dust, which clogged the ventilation grilles and interferes with normal air circulation;
  5. warm or even hot case (mainly on the left side near the ventilation holes). This is very noticeable if the case was not heated so much earlier;
  6. the smell of burnt plastic, braid, etc. In general, in case of any suspicious smell - I recommend that you turn off the device immediately!

Dust and ventilation holes. Check, clean

One of the main reasons for overheating and noisy operation of coolers is dust. Over time, even in fairly clean rooms, dust settles on the ventilation grill of the device and impairs air circulation.

It is recommended to carry out dust cleaning 1-2 times a year. It is enough to disassemble the device and blow everything thoroughly.

Cooling pad and home counterparts

Also, a special cooling pad helps to reduce the temperature by several degrees (up to 10-15 ° C). They come in a variety of sizes, fan capacities and designs.

Cooling pad for laptop

For those who have not yet decided to buy a stand, you can go an easier way: put something under the laptop, for example, a book. The main thing is that the height between the table surface and the laptop should increase! See the photo below.

A book is placed under the laptop

Important: The book (or something else) should be placed very carefully: the fact is that on some laptop models - this action can be used to block the ventilation holes!

Trying to reduce power consumption

If you reduce the power consumption of the processor, then you can significantly reduce its heating. True, I note that the performance of the device is also decreasing ...

However, you can find a kind of "golden mean" that will allow you to use the device without any problems (at least until the issue with the cooling system is resolved).

To change power consumption, open the Windows Control Panel and go to the section "Hardware and Sound" , further into subsection "Power supply" .

Hardware and Sound - Power Options (Windows 10 Control Panel)

Then open the settings for the current power scheme, and click on the link "Change advanced power settings" (see screenshot below 👇).

Change advanced power settings

Then open the tab "Processor Power Management / Maximum Processor State" and set the percentage for battery and mains operation. Even setting the value to 90% can significantly help in excess heat generation.

System optimization: close unused programs, remove garbage and unnecessary software

The less the load on the processor, the less it heats up. It is logical that in addition to other measures, you can try to optimize your system.

To begin with, I recommend opening Task Manager (key combination Shift + Ctrl + Esc) and see which processes create the greatest load.

Very often, the load comes from those applications that you have not even launched and that you do not need at the current time. Close everything unnecessary!

Unused programs need to be closed (or even deleted) ...

In addition, I also recommend that you open the tab in the task manager autoload and check what you have loaded when you turn on the laptop. All applications that you rarely use, everything that is unfamiliar to you - feel free to disconnect from startup!

Disable all little-used programs in startup

👉 Help!

If you do not have Windows 10, you will not be able to edit startup in the task manager. To work with autoloading, you need specials. utilities, see this article ->

It will also not be superfluous to optimize the Windows OS, remove "garbage" and temporary files that are no longer needed, etc. I will also give a couple of my articles to help ... 👇

How and where the laptop is operated

It is not uncommon for a laptop to overheat due to improper operation. Here are some tips:

  1. Firstly, do not use the laptop on the floor, sofa, bed, etc. The fact is that the soft tissue blocks the ventilation holes (air circulation deteriorates) and the temperature begins to rise;
  2. Secondly, it is necessary that there is always a free space near the ventilation openings through which hot air comes out;
  3. third, keep in mind that 70-75% of the dust is 10-20 cm from the floor (and if you use your laptop on the floor - it will clog up with dust very quickly!);
  4. fourthly, try not to work in dusty rooms where repairs are in progress;
  5. fifthlyif it's hot summer in the yard and it's like in a bathhouse in your house - try not to force the laptop with resource-intensive applications (put a fan on the side of it, watch the temperature, take breaks more often). At a time like this, not only you are hot 😎 ...

Remember that working in this position negatively affects not only the temperature of the laptop, but also our health.

Important!

Ideally, the laptop should be used on a clean, level, dry and hard surface (a regular desk, for example).

It is even better if it stands on a special cooling pad.

A few words about thermal paste

In addition to cleaning from dust, it is highly desirable to change the thermal paste (thermo-pad) once every 2-4 years. It is used as a buffer between the processor and the heatsink of the cooling system. Over time (especially at high loads) - it tends to "dry up", as a result of which the heat exchange deteriorates, and the processor temperature begins to rise.

Therefore, if all of the above did not help you, and the temperature is still growing (and you have had a laptop for more than 2 years, and no one has serviced it before) - most likely the matter is in thermal paste ...

About thermal paste

I note that replacing thermal paste, although the procedure is not complicated, requires some experience (both in disassembling a laptop and in direct application). If you have never encountered such an operation, I would recommend that you still contact the service center, for a small fee they will do everything in the best possible way!

Disable Turbo Boost and Undervolting (update from 07/05/2019)

The methods are specific, but they work and allow you to reduce the temperature to 20 ° C-25 ° C, which is very significant (especially noticeable on gaming laptops).

In order not to repeat myself here, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with one of my notes (everything is shown there with examples). Link to note below.
