How to reset the router settings to factory presets

Good day!

In general, most users quite rarely enter the router settings (some were asked by the provider once when connecting, and in principle they never looked there anymore 👀).

But sooner or later the moment comes that it becomes extremely important to enter them (for example, you need to change the connection settings, forward ports, change the security settings of the Wi-Fi network, or you simply changed the provider - and you want to save time so as not to manually configure dozens of parameters, etc.). 👌

And here... comes the realization that the login and password for accessing the router's web interface have long been forgotten (or not known at all). In this case, the only thing that can be done is reset settings Wi-Fi router and restore factory presets, and then set your parameters again.

In general, in this article I will consider several ways how you can perform this operation.

So...

👉 Note

1) When you reset the router settings, all its parameters will be returned to the factory presets (your configured Wi-Fi networks, PPPoE connections, etc. will be deleted, and they will need to be configured again).

2) If you have English. firmware version - look for the "Reset" item (from English - reset). Some people confuse it with "Reboot" (it is a simple reboot, it doesn’t matter if you unplug the device and then plug it back in).

Resetting the router (Reset!)

Hardware (or "Hard Reset")

It is used in the most severe cases: when you cannot log into the web interface of the router, when the device freezes, malfunctions occur, etc.

For this, as said above, on the routers there is a special. button "Reset" (usually located on the back of the device).

Note that you cannot just accidentally press the button: it is small and recessed into the body of the device (you need a pencil or a pin).

To reset just press the button "Reset" and hold it for 10-15 seconds.

Usually, the LEDs (indicators) on the device body either go out and light up again, or one of the LEDs (SYS, system) starts blinking quickly.

After that, you can re-configure the router: the login and password will be reset to zero. The most commonly used abbreviation is admin (without quotes).

Pay attention to WPS

On some routers, the RESET button is combined with WPS (note: WPS - used to quickly set up a Wi-Fi connection). The trick here is that:

  1. if you press this button and hold it for no more than 5 seconds (so that the WPS indicator starts blinking), then the WPS function will be activated;
  2. if you hold down the button for more than 10 seconds so that the SYS indicator starts blinking quickly, a hardware reset will occur.

WPS / Reset - one button for 2 actions!

For example, this is found on TP-Link routers (see photo below 👇).

Program

It can be used if you were able to access the router's web interface. Most often, it is used if the router began to behave unstably, or too many network parameters need to be changed (it is faster to "reset" them and set them again).

Let's look at the steps in order.

1) Go to the router settings (how to do it). Usually it is enough to enter the IP address 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 into the address bar of the browser and use it as a username and password admin .

2) In the web interface, you need to find the section "System Tools / Management / System Tools" (how the section is called depends on the model of your router and its firmware version).

For example, in TP-Link routers, you need to open: "System Tools / Factory Settings" and press the button "Restore" - and the factory settings will be restored (see the screen below 👇).

Note!

If you have an English version of the firmware, then the path for TP-Link will be: "System Tools / Factory Defaults / Restore".

In ASUS routers, just go to the section "Administration" (at the bottom of the window) and open the tab "Manage settings" ... Next, agree to the restoration (see the screenshot below 👇).

Another example is the Tenda router. Here, in principle, everything is the same: open the section "Control" , then we find the subsection "Device Management" and we see the button "Reset" ... Just click on it and confirm your intentions ...
