Why uTorrent downloads at a slow speed: torrents take a very long time to download ...

User question

Good day.

Help with one problem. No matter what I download in uTorrent, the download speed is only 1 Mb / s. Moreover, it sometimes drops to several Kb / s (i.e. very low speed - one movie can be downloaded all day ...).

Hello.

I note right away that very few users are satisfied with the speed of downloading files. The higher the speed, the higher you want ...

In this article I will give the main reasons for problems with torrents, by going through which, you can speed up the download somewhat, and if you do not solve the problem, then at least reduce it to a minimum ... 👌

How to increase your torrent download speed

Educational program about MB / s and Mbit / s

Probably the first and most important thing to say in this article is about the difference between Mbps and Mbps (what measures the speed of the Internet). I'll give you a very simple explanation below.

The rates of your Internet provider for 99.9% indicate the speed in Mbps!

The download speed in a torrent program (say, uTorrent) is shown inMB / s (MB / s)!

To convert Mbps to Mbps, you need to divide the value by 8.

Example: if your provider promises you a speed of 40 Mbps, then the download speed in uTorrent, in the best case, will be about 5 Mbps. And if we take into account that 10-15% will be taken away by the transmission of service information, then even less, about 4.5-4.8 MB / s.

This confusion creates a lot of controversy and misunderstandings. Therefore, I brought it here. ☝

By the way, I recommend that you read the article on this topic - i.e. about Internet speed in Mbps and Mb / s: what is the difference and where is the catch

The number of people pumping and distributing

And one more thing that I would like to point out right away. Many users do not pay attention to how many people distribute the file and how much it downloads.

The fact is that if there are very few uploaders (1-2 people), then the download speed will, as a rule, be lower than that of the torrent that is distributed by 97 people.

This data (how much it uploads / downloads) is always shown on the torrent tracker: most often, the number of uploading is shown in green with an up arrow .

Checking the real internet speed

Most often, the problem of slow downloads lies in the fact that the real Internet speed differs from your tariff value.

Let's say you are connected to a 100 Mbit / s tariff, but due to the high traffic load, the real speed is only 50 Mbit / s.

Unfortunately, this happens all the time (however, the Internet provider does not deceive you - if you look at the contract, then the prefix "DO" appears there, and the speed itself is dynamic and constantly changing).

For a start, I recommend looking at properties of your network connection on Windows. This requires:

  1. press the WIN + R button combination, enter the ncpa.cpl command and press Enter (this will open all network connections - the method works in all Windows: XP / 7/8/10). An example is shown below;

    ncpa.cpl - View all network connections

  2. then you need to select the active current network connection and go to it state ... By the way, no red crosses should be lit on it, and usually it has a name "Wireless connection" or "Network connection" ;

    View network status

    👉Note : connection speed does not always reflect the real speed of Internet access. For example, if you have a wireless network, then it reflects the speed between your router (router) and your computer / laptop. But naturally, the real speed of your Internet will not jump higher than this value (even if the provider sets your speed higher)!

  3. Then look at the line "Speed" - the desired value is reflected opposite it.

    72Mbps Speed / Wireless Status

What services to use to check the speed:

  1. //beta.speedtest.net/ru
  2. //2ip.ru/speed/
  3. //www.speed.io/

Test results on //beta.speedtest.net/ru

👉 Important!

If you are unable to start testing using the links above, most likely you simply do not have Adobe Flash Player installed (not updated). Try updating it!

By the way, if real speed you have significantly less the one that the Internet provider supposedly has to provide at the rate - pay attention to the operation of the Wi-Fi router (if you use it используется).

If the information provided is not enough, I also recommend that you read the article on checking the connection speed, the link below.

UTorrent settings: what to look for

1. Are there any restrictions

To get started, right-click on the uTorrent icon in the tray (next to the clock) and check if there are any download speed limits (in my example below it is set to 4 MB / s 👇).

Limiting downloads in uTorrent

2. Setup Assistant

Next, launch the uTorrent Setup Assistant. It will help you to correctly set the basic parameters for your specific network and system.

To open it - go to the tab "Settings" and select "Setup Assistant" (see the screen below), or just press the combination of buttons Ctrl + G .

Setup Assistant in uTorrent

Then press the button "Test" and wait for the end of the test. Then save the settings that the assistant recommended to you.

Automatic setup of uTorrent

3. "Speed" tab

Further, I also recommend opening the program settings directly (from the menu "Settings" , or you can just use a combination of buttons Ctrl + P ). An example is shown below.

UTorrent settings

If you have problems with slow downloading torrents, first of all pay attention to the tab "Speed" ... It is in it that the restrictions on the maximum upload and download speed are set (on the screen below, these restrictions are - i.e., for example, the download speed will not be higher than 3750 KB / s!).

Approx. : you need to set a speed limit in certain situations: if you have a large load on your hard disk, at high speed the connection is broken, if your Internet channel is "shared" on several PCs, etc.

Checking the speed limit

4. Speed limit for local peers

In the program settings in the "BitTorrent" tab there is one important setting that significantly affects (in some cases) the download speed. I recommend that you uncheck the box in this tab. "Local peer speed limit" .

Disable the speed limit for local peers

5. Traffic limit

In general, by default, the traffic limit in uTorrent is disabled. But if you have problems with speed, be sure to check if bandwidth limitation is enabled. If you have an unlimited connection, it is recommended to remove all restrictions (as in the screenshot below).

Removing traffic limitation

6. Priority

A very important parameter that directly affects the speed of downloading torrents. The fact is that uTorrent, in my opinion, includes a large number of active torrents by default. I would reduce this number to 3-4, and change the number of downloaded torrents to 1-2 (example in the screenshot below).

Thus, the entire speed of your Internet channel will be aimed at downloading a specific torrent, and not being sprayed at once for a dozen ...

Maximum active torrents

Are there any speed limits in the Wi-Fi router?

If you use a Wi-Fi router ("box" that creates a Wi-Fi network in the house 😊) - please note that special settings can be set in its settings. restrictions. It's about the download speed limit (in English "Download Limit" 👇).

Download speed limit (Tenda router)

Of course, to remove such a restriction, you need to go to the web interface of your Wi-Fi router, find the Wi-Fi settings section ("Bandwidth Control", "Wi-Fi Settings", etc. derivatives) and remove the limit (for example, by setting "0").

More details on how to do this are described in my previous instructions ... 👇

An attempt to change uTorrent to analogs

I think it's no secret to anyone that uTorrent is not the ultimate truth and has many peers / competitors. And the same files can be found on different resources, with different access speeds ...

For example, there is a very popular program MediaGet, which allows you to search for files right in your window! Moreover, the found files can be sorted by access speed (i.e. select the file that will download faster).

I will add that MediaGet also shows the file type, size, cover, description (i.e. all the necessary information). An example is shown below.

By the way, in addition to torrents, many files can also be found in an alternative way: for example, using private FTP, StrongDC ++ and eMule programs, etc. For more details, see one last post прошл.

What the network is loaded with: are there any third-party applications that load the network

It often happens that the download speed is very slow, not because of problems with uTorrent (or with the network, PC, provider), but simply because other programs are also actively using the network. Those. there is simply not enough channel for everyone: 1 MB / s was taken away by torrents, another 2-3 MB / s by the browser, games, etc.

To find out what the network is loaded with, open Task Manager (combination of buttons Ctrl + Shift + Esc ). Further in the tab "Processes" sort applications by their network load (see the screen below, relevant for Windows 10 👇).

Network load / Windows 10

If you have Windows 7, then in the task manager you need to open the tab "Performance" , then open from it "Resource Monitor" , and in the section " Net" view network activity (see screen below).

Network Activity / Windows 7

In addition to the task manager, you can install specials. utility NetLimiter (👉 I wrote about it here) and look at the activity of applications there. By the way, NetLimiter allows you to immediately limit the speed of any of the applications!

Sort by download speed - NetLimiter

You can also estimate the network load using special utilities to determine the characteristics of your computer.

For example, Speccy, easily shows the current network load: you can turn off uTorrent and compare if the network load is gone - if it is significant, then some other applications are using it.

Is there a high load on the hard disk

If your download speed periodically drops (then it restores again, and then drops again), then I recommend paying attention to the load created by uTorrent (or its analogues) on the hard drive.

In particular, uTorrent in cases when the disk is overloaded - shows information about 100% load in the lower part of the window (example below).

Most often, this happens when downloading a large number of torrents (or a torrent with a large number of small files: archives, pictures, etc.).

Disk overloaded 44% // bottom of the window in uTorrent

👉 To help!

HDD disk overloaded 100% when downloading files (torrents) in uTorrent

How to reduce the load on the disk:

  1. close all games, video editors, download managers, etc. leave only, say, uTorrent;
  2. limit the maximum number of downloaded torrents to 1-2 pieces;
  3. set a limit on the speed of downloading and uploading torrents (if the load does not subside, reduce the speed by another bar);
  4. limit the number of distributed torrents to 1-2;
  5. close all utilities to optimize the system and disk (for example, defragmenters can heavily load the disk during operation).

In addition, I recommend that you read another article of mine, which will help reduce the load on the disk. Link below.

Changing the speed limit for Internet access in Windows

For some users, one fact will be a surprise - in the Windows settings, by default, a limit on the Internet bandwidth is set. Those. roughly speaking, you are not using the maximum possible speed ...

To remove this restriction, you need to open group policy editor ... To do this, press the combination of buttons WIN + R , and enter the commandgpedit.msc - press ENTER ... See example below.

gpedit.msc - launch the group policy editor

👉 Important!

Not all versions of Windows can open Group Policy editing. If you have, say, a home version, such settings will not be available to you.

Next, in the editor, you need to open the following tab:

"Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Network / QoS Packet Scheduler"

This tab has a link to "Limiting Reserved Bandwidth" - it must be opened (see screen below, right side).

QoS Packet Scheduler // Group Policy Editor

Next, you need to switch the slider to "Enable" and set the limit to "0", save the settings.

Limit the reserved bandwidth

Now Windows will not limit your bandwidth and the network will work a little faster.

I've got it all for now ...

For additions on the topic - a separate merci.

Good luck!
