The Internet does not work via a network cable from a router (there is a "red" cross on the network icon)

Good day!

It happens that you sit after a working day, watch TV - and then, bang ... the doorbell rings: a friend-neighbor comes and very much asks you to figure out where his Internet is gone. Actually, this is how topics for articles are born (when you climb for half an hour through the dusty back streets of an apartment, dealing with a problem that has arisen out of nowhere) ...

In today's article, I want to consider the main reasons due to which the Internet may not work on a computer that is connected via a network cable to the router (I think that many PCs are connected to the Internet this way, and Wi-Fi is used by laptops, smartphones, etc. devices).

And so, let's get down to business ...

Why the Internet may not work

In general, in general, an article of such a plan must be divided into two possible cases:

  • in the first: you have a red cross on the icon with a network and it is reported that you have no network cable connected at all (or no available connections). Those. the computer does not react at all to connecting / disconnecting the cable from the router (but it should respond if the router is turned on and working (even if the cable from the Internet provider is not connected to the router itself) );

    The network cable is not connected (no connections available) / As an example

  • the second option: there are no red crosses on the icon and the network is located (for example, the yellow exclamation mark "No Internet access" is often lit on the icon with the network).

    Error: no internet access

Then I will break this article into 2 parts according to just these two options ...

Option # 1: no network connection, no cable connected

no network

1) Check if the router is turned on, if the cable is intact, if it sits tightly in the sockets

Once again, I will say that by connecting the switched on router and the computer with a network cable, there should not be an icon with a red cross! If it is on, then almost certainly some equipment is turned off (or malfunctioning), perhaps there is a problem with the cables.

To get started, I recommend simply reconnecting the network cable to both the router and the computer's network card. Next, restart your router and PC. Please note that several LEDs should be flashing (on) on a running router

2) Is there a driver for the network card? Try to update it

The second thing I recommend paying attention to is the network card driver. The fact is that for most network adapters, Windows automatically installs drivers (but they do not work correctly with some cards, and it is advisable to update the driver by downloading it from the official website).

I note that in rare cases (for some network cards) when installing even modern Windows 10 - the OS cannot pick up a driver and the card does not work at all.

To see if there is a driver for the network card, open device Manager ... For this:

  1. press the button combination Win + R;
  2. enter command devmgmt.msc and click OK.

    Launching Device Manager - devmgmt.msc

In the device manager, open the "Network adapters" tab: all your network adapters should be listed here (note: on which drivers are installed).

Usually, the name of the network card is something like "Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller", "Intel Network Controller" (maybe Ethernet controller, Network controller, etc. derivatives).

Update driver

If your card is not in the list of network adapters, check the Other Devices tab (it displays devices for which there are no drivers). Please note that on devices for which there are no drivers, yellow exclamation marks are lit.

As an example - there is no driver for this device

I also want to note that the device can simply be turned off - then a dark "arrow" will be on in the device manager opposite it (see the screen below). If so: just right-click on such a device and turn it on.

Turn on the device

3) Is the network adapter included

The network adapter can also be disabled in the Windows Control Panel (there is a special "Network Connections" tab). To open it:

  • press the button combination Win + R ;
  • enter command ncpa.cpl and click OK.

How to open ncpa.cpl network connections

In the opened directory of network connections, see if the network adapter is disabled (example in the screenshot below). Disabled adapter - it is colorless, it has the status "Disabled".

Note that you can have several adapters: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth, etc. Pay attention to Ethernet (or "local network connection").

To enable the adapter, just right-click on it and select the "Enable" option.

The network adapter is turned off

At the very least, the icon should become colored, as in the screenshot below.

Turn on the adapter

If you were unable to enable the adapter, please also note that it can be disabled in the BIOS. It would not be superfluous to check it out.

The network card can be disabled in the BIOS

4) Try connecting a network cable from your ISP directly to your PC's network card

Well, the last thing I recommend in this case:

  • try disconnecting the network cable of your internet provider from the router and connecting it directly to your PC. Are there any changes?
  • pay attention to whether the router's Wi-Fi network itself is working (can your phone, laptop see it?). Try also to connect another PC or laptop to the router with a network cable (I am leading to the fact that the problem may be related to the router, and not to the PC);
  • if you have a second network card, try plugging it in and testing it. It is possible that your old network card has become unusable. Moreover, today network cards are quite cheap: you can buy it for only 200-400 rubles. (and if you use promotions in Chinese stores, then generally for a penny!).

Option number 2: there is a locale. network, but no internet access

Network without internet access

By the way, modern Windows 10 has an excellent diagnostic and troubleshooting wizard built into it. If you have problems accessing the network - try right-clicking on the network icon and selecting "Diagnostics". In many cases, a wizard can help solve the problem.

Troubleshooting

1) Check the connection status in the router settings. Is there any internet at all

To begin with, what you need to make sure is whether the router itself is connected to the Internet (and how he can distribute it to you if he himself has not connected to the Internet ...).

In order to do this, it is necessary go to the router settings .

You can also try to connect to Wi-Fi (if there is a router - that is, Wi-Fi?) Network using other devices: phone, laptop, etc. Do they have Internet?

Usually, to open the router settings, it is enough to drive the IP address into the address bar of the browser: 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.10.1 (depending on the device model. Use admin as the login and password).

To help! Instructions for entering the router settings: //ocomp.info/kak-zayti-v-nastroyki-routera.html

In the settings of the router, just open the "Status" tab - and you can find out if the router is also connected to the Internet. As an example, I gave a couple of screenshots from different models of routers (pay attention to the English version of the firmware: Network Status - connected).

Addition!

Perhaps you just lost your Internet settings! Check them, try resetting and reconfiguring them. An example of setting up Internet access on a TP-Link router - //ocomp.info/kak-podklyuchit-i-nastroit-wi-fi-router.html#i-4

2) Check IP, DNS settings

Next, I recommend checking the IP and DNS settings (if you accidentally entered the wrong parameters (or it happened as a result of a failure or error), then the Internet may not exist).

Need to open network connections : To do this, press the keyboard shortcut Win + R, and enter the commandncpa.cpl.

Then you need to open the properties of the network adapter through which the connection is made (as a rule, its name contains "etherner", "LAN connection", "network connection" and other derivatives) .

Opening the properties of the network adapter

Then you need to open properties IP version 4 (as shown in the screenshot below).

IP v4 properties

In most cases, to connect to the router, you must set the automatic acquisition of the IP address and DNS. Pay attention to the red rectangles in the screenshot below.

By the way, you can register 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as DNS (these are DNS from Google, and they are an order of magnitude more stable than DNS from most providers).

Checking IP and DNS

3) If the Internet is available when connecting the Internet cable directly to the PC - check if your provider is blocking the connection by MAC address

As recommended above, try connecting an Internet cable from your provider directly to your computer's network card. If the Internet appears, then it is very possible that:

  1. you have incorrect settings in your router (WAN section) for connecting to the Internet. Check them again with the data provided by your Internet provider when you connected;
  2. Perhaps your ISP blocks devices by MAC address: each network card and router has its own. And for security reasons, some providers deny access to the Internet for unfamiliar devices. In this case, in the router settings, you just need to specify the MAC address of your network card through which you previously (before installing the router) accessed the Internet.

Cloning a MAC address

The ipconfig / all command on the command line will help you find the MAC address. (The physical address of the adapter is the MAC address)

Addition!

4) Try to temporarily disable antivirus utilities

Some utilities that ensure network security (for example, antiviruses, firewalls, etc.) can block incoming / outgoing connections. At the time of testing the network and searching for the reasons for inoperability, I recommend disabling (temporarily!) Such software.

Disable Avast antivirus for 1 hour

5) Are there any problems on the side of the provider ...

If all of the above did not help, try to check with the provider if he has any problems, for example, a line break.

PS

I also recommend that you read one of my past articles, the link to which I give below.

Although it is on a somewhat different topic, the causes of the problems are the same. Therefore, I recommend to review.

That's all for now ...
