How to add a character that is not on the keyboard to the text (→, ∞, ∇, etc.)

Good day!

When you often work with documents, write articles, prepare reports, abstracts, and even just carry on correspondence - sometimes you need to insert some rare symbol into the text. For example, an arrow (→), a triangle (∇), a sum or infinity sign (∞), etc. But there are no such symbols on the keyboard. So how to be? ..

In this article I will give several options for solving this issue. I think that for many in office work, the article may be very useful.

Inserting rare characters into text

Option number 1

Most users use Word when working with documents (the most popular editor in the world!). Of course, he would not have been so popular if there were no badges in his arsenal ...

I'll show you a couple of ways for the modern version of Word (2016).

1. Go to the "Insert" menu, and select the "Shapes" element. There are a lot of different figures in this tab: arrows, lines, triangles, squares, hearts, etc.

2. If you need different omegas, alphas, sigma - then in the same section "Insert" there is a tab "Symbols". Opening it, you can find all the mathematical elements: equal signs, sums, integrals, more / less, etc. An example is shown below.

Insert - other symbols

Note that Word does not have everything that may be required. In addition, the same shapes inserted into the document cannot be transferred to a text notebook or chat (it is simply impossible).

Therefore, I recommend that you also familiarize yourself with the rest of the options.

Option number 2

Another very simple and quick way is to simply copy the symbol (icon) from some web page you like. You can even collect the most frequently used symbols in a separate Word document.

Example of copying and pasting symbols

What I recommend:

  1. //coolsymbol.com/ - great symbols with emotions are collected. More suitable for chats, instant messengers, etc. If you "rummage", you can find icons for road signs, animals, zodiac signs and many others.
  2. //ocomp.info/simvolyi-znachki.html is one of my previous articles. It contains a small collection of some of the most popular symbols used in the creation of documents (general orientation);
  3. //unicode-table.com/ru/ - a huge collection of unicode characters. Here you can find almost any existing symbol (which captivates, you can search for a simple query "Dog", for example, 🐕).

Option number 3

Windows has a special symbol table (there are hundreds of them and very different). To open it:

  1. press the button combination Win + R ;
  2. enter command charmap and click OK.

charmap - open the charmap

Next, a table should open (see screen below). Having found the desired symbol, simply press two successive buttons: "Select", "Copy". That's it, now the symbol can be inserted somewhere.

I used a notebook as a test - an arrow was added.

Notepad - edit \ paste

In general, one of the most reliable ways: it will work even if you do not have the Internet and the Word editor is not installed.

Option number 4

Well, the last option, of course, does not apply to icons, but still. If you need some kind of special. a symbol that, in principle, does not exist (does not exist) - then there is only one option: draw it yourself, save it as a picture and insert it into the document.

To help! Best drawing programs: //ocomp.info/programmyi-dlya-risovaniya.html

You can draw both in specialized software and in regular Paint (to open it, click Win + R , and enter the command mspaint ) .

Paint - draw your own icon (Drawing from the cartoon "Three from Prostokvashino")

To insert a drawn picture into a Word document, simply go to the "Insert" section and select the "Pictures" tab. Then just indicate on the disk the location of the saved image.

That, in fact, is all.
