It gives error 651 when connecting to the Internet ... There is a solution!

User question ...

Hello.

Recently, Windows was reinstalled on the computer (Windows 7 was changed to Windows 10), and now it gives error 651 when connecting to the Internet.

They called the provider - he says that everything is in order with the network, there are no failures or breakdowns. Offers a paid service for setting up a network. Maybe we did something wrong, and you can configure it yourself?

Good day.

When connecting to the Internet using the PPPoE protocol, error 651 is not uncommon (and, as a rule, little depends on a particular provider, they encounter it in Rostelecom, Dom.ru, Billine, etc.).

For some reason, for many users, the solution to the problem is quite simple - reinstalling Windows ... 👀

Meanwhile, reinstalling the OS does not always help to solve such a problem.

In this article I will try to give the most basic reasons for this error and give a solution to each of them ...

*

Causes of error 651 and their solutions

Maybe the first advice simple to the point of banality - but just try to restart your computer before all the other recommendations of this article ...

Example of error 651 / modem or other communication device reported an error

1) High speed connection setting error / failure

It is not uncommon for this error to appear after reinstalling Windows (or after setting up a network). In some cases, the error also pops up in the "old" Windows OS, where everything worked only yesterday ... ☝

The first thing I recommend doing in this case is to recreate the high-speed connection. This is done quite simply.

1) First go to the Windows Control Panel at: Control Panel \ Network and Internet \ Network and Sharing Center (the screen is shown below).

2) Then delete your old high-speed connection (Attention! The connection contains the password and login for accessing the Internet - before deleting, check if you have this data. They are provided by your provider).

👉 Advice!

In some cases, Windows may be able to fix network connection problems on its own. Try running network diagnostics before creating and configuring a new connection (link "Troubleshooting", the second in the screenshot below).

3) Next, open the link "Create and configure a new connection or network" .

Creating a new network connection

👉 Note!

If you use a router to connect to the Internet, you can proceed to the next recommendations in the article. Although, with a router, it is rare to see such an error. Check if the router is turned on, connected to the PC, if everything is in order with the wires ...

4) Then you need to do the following:

  1. in the window for choosing a connection option, specify the option "Internet connection. Setting up a broadband or dial-up Internet connection" ;
  2. in the window "How do you want to connect" - specify the option "High speed (with PPPoE). DSL or cable connection requiring username or password" ;
  3. in the next window you must enter password and login for internet access (This information must be provided by your Internet provider. Check in the contract for the provision of communication services with him) .

Recreate the high-speed PPPoE connection

5) After creating a new connection - try to connect using it. In many cases, such a simple procedure allows you to quickly restore network performance.

2) Corrupted Winsock settings

In some cases, incorrect configuration of network cards and network settings (sometimes viruses or worms, antiviruses, programs for protecting personal information) can damage the Winsock settings, which in turn leads to various errors related to the network.

Many people ask what is Winsock? Simply put, it is a group of functions that are required to implement applications on a TCP / IP network.

Possible problems with Winsock corruption:

  1. the computer cannot automatically obtain an IP address;
  2. many network services start and then stop;
  3. network connections may disappear;
  4. there is a ping by addresses, by names - no ping;
  5. all sorts of errors may appear, including ours, 651 ...

Solution: You need to reset Winsock settings.

How it's done:

  1. First you need to run command line as administrator. To do this, you need to open the task manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc buttons), then click a new task, and enter the command CMD, not forgetting to put a tick on the launch of tasks from the administrator.

    Run Command Prompt as Administrator

  2. Then enter the command netsh winsock reset and press Enter. In response, receive a message that everything is completed, the computer needs to be restarted. Then restart your PC.

3) Problem with the network card driver

If you connected new equipment to your PC (especially those related to the network), installed any applications, reinstalled the OS, it is quite possible that a driver conflict could have occurred (well, or in general, there is simply no driver for the network card in the system).

To see if there is a driver for your network adapter, open device Manager ... To do this, go to the control panel, then translate the display on large icons and open the manager you are looking for.

How to open Device Manager / for example Windows 10

In Device Manager, open the tabs "Network adapters" and "Other devices" (if any). Your adapter must be present in the network adapters tab (for example, I have a Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller). If you do not have Ethernet (Wi-Fi Wireless adapter) in this tab, then most likely you simply do not have drivers.

In this case, in the tab "Other devices" you must have unknown devices (see example in the screenshot below 👇).

No driver for Wi-Fi network adapter

You can try to update your driver without exiting Device Manager. To do this, right-click on the unknown device, and in the pop-up context menu, select "Update drivers ..." .

Update Drivers - Device Manager

If this did not work to update the driver, I recommend that you read the articles below (in them I have already described the procedure in detail: what, how, and why ...).

👉 To help!

1) How to find and update the driver for any unknown device.

2) Updating the driver for the Wi-Fi adapter.

3) How to uninstall a driver (in some cases, you cannot install a new driver until you remove the old one).

4) Connection was blocked by antivirus (firewall)

Unfortunately, many antiviruses and firewalls do not always only protect us - they often create unnecessary errors and problems when trying to interrupt somewhere. Therefore, when error 651 appears, I recommend (while searching and eliminating the cause) disable the antivirus (if you have it installed).

Disable Avast antivirus for 1 hour

Also, do not forget that Windows has its own built-in firewall / firewall. By default, it is enabled and running. It also needs to be disabled (temporarily).

How to open firewall on Windows:

  1. to push WIN + R;
  2. to introducefirewall.cpl and press Enter.

How to open a firewall

Then click on the link on the left Turn Windows Firewall On and Off , in the window that opens - for all networks, switch the sliders to the mode Disable Windows Firewall .

How to turn off the firewall

Then save the settings and try to connect to the network again. Perhaps error 651 will not occur ...

5) Is your computer connected to a second network? Two network cards ...

In a household it often happens that a computer has not one, but two network cards. One is used to connect to an ISP and the other is for a home LAN (for example, connected to another PC / laptop).

In general, if you have two network cards installed on your computer, I recommend disabling one of them.

To do this, first open network connections ... To do this:

  1. click Win + R;
  2. enter ncpa.cpl and press Enter.

How to open ncpa.cpl network connections

Next, disable ALL network adapters that will be there. After that, turn on one network adapter, the one through which you have a PPPoE connection (that is, the adapter to which the Internet cable is connected).

Note: to enable / disable the adapter - just right-click on it and select the required task in the context menu.

Network Connections - Disconnecting One Adapter

By the way, disabled adapters become "colorless", and their status is indicated as "Disabled" (see example below 👇).

This is what a disabled adapter looks like

6) One more detail!

Check the IP version 4 (TCP IPv4) properties of the adapter through which you are connected to your ISP. To do this, in the tab network connections (in which we have now disabled / enabled adapters) go to the properties of the required adapter.

Next open line properties IP version 4 (TCP IPv4) - see arrows 1 and 2 on the screenshot below. In the properties, check two parameters (if it's different, change them):

  1. Obtain an IP address automatically;
  2. Obtain DNS server address automatically.

IP Version 4 Properties (TCP IPv4)

Save the settings and try to reconnect to the network.

7) Network failure at the ISP

If the rest of the recommendations did not help solve the problem, I recommend contacting the Internet provider and clarifying whether they have any failures, whether everything is in order with the network.

It is especially worth "suspecting" the provider in the case when nothing happened on your computer (neither installing new applications, nor reinstalling Windows, nor connecting new equipment), and the network suddenly disappeared. When trying to connect, this error began to appear ...

8) What else can you do

  1. What kind of OS? Pay attention to your Windows OS. If this is an assembly from all sorts of "craftsmen", I recommend that you replace it and install a 👉 licensed copy (fortunately, now it's free). In all sorts of assemblies, there may be a variety of errors;
  2. If you have an ADSL modem, check its functionality;
  3. If you use a Wi-Fi router, check if everything is in order with it. It may be worth trying to connect via a Wi-Fi connection (instead of a wired one), for example, from a phone, and check if the network is working at all, if there is Internet. I also recommend trying to reboot the router. Also, can you 👉 enter the router settings?
  4. Is everything ok with the wires? Very often they are damaged when furniture is moved. Also, the wires could simply come off the jacks, try reconnecting them. Sometimes they are gnawed by domestic animals: cats, dogs;

    Gnawed USB cable

  5. Try to roll back Windows OS to an earlier state when everything was working;
  6. The last tip: try 👉 reinstalling Windows (although I am not a supporter of changing the OS for every problem, but in this case, if the rest does not help, I don’t know what to advise yet ...).

That's all, good luck to everyone!
