How to disable a key on a computer / laptop: forever or only in the desired program / game (We also disable sticky keys)

User question

Hello.

Help please: I need to disable the Shift key - in my game it brings up the side menu and this is very annoying! I accidentally hit it when I press Ctrl.

I tried to reassign it, but then it stops working altogether - in all programs (and Shift is still needed in the same Word when you work with texts).

The rest of the question is truncated as not informative ...

Hello.

Eh ... With your question you reminded me of the old days when, in order to play, you went to the computer. clubs: on a couple of keyboards, I saw the Win button torn out "by the roots" (apparently, it was accidentally touched by gamers and the game was minimized 😒). Well, at one fine moment, probably, someone's nerves broke down ...

We, of course, will not resort to such a radical method today, because there are more civilized options 👌 (about them, in fact, below ...).

Disabling "interfering" keys: options

Zeroing (the key will not fire at all)

For this job we need one small utility - 👉 Simple Disable Key (link to Major Geeks). It is good in that it allows you to quickly disable any of the keys on the keyboard (both PC and laptop!).

In addition, it has one more mega-useful option: you can disable keys both at all (for all applications and Windows) and for a specific program / game!

*

The Simple Disable Key setting is standard (I will not consider it). After launching it:

  1. choosethat keyyou want to disable (button "Choose" ). If we are talking about: Alt, Shift, Win or Control - then they have already been brought to the panel and you only need to put a checkmark in front of them;
  2. then press the button "add key" (arrow-2 on the screenshot below 👇).

Simple Disable Key - select a key

After that, a window will appear in front of you, in which there are several options to choose from:

  1. "Always" - means that this key will stop working in any programs;
  2. "Scheduled" - disable for a certain time;
  3. "Only for the program" - it is convenient if some button gets in the way only in a particular game (like Shift for the author of the question).

Off forever or for some program, or for a while

In my example, I chose the first option "Always" and clicked OK.

Everything! Now the Shift key will be disabled for all programs (you can start Word and check - the text is no longer typed in capital letters). You can click OK and close the program window.

The Shift key is now disabled

By the way, if you additionally want to disable the key Win - then create a rule for her, similar to the above steps. You will end up with 2 lines of rules like in my example below. 👇

Now both Win and Shift are disabled

Note: to delete a rule for disabling (zeroing) a key, just delete the line with the rule and save the settings. Fast?! 👌

Reassignment (one key will fire after another)

If suddenly the previous method did not work for you or a simple shutdown is not enough for you, and you want to "hang" something you need on this key, then why not replace its "value" ... ✌

For example, there was a "Ctrl" key - will become the "Z" key ?! Previously, a menu appeared in the game - but now there will only be "shooting" (like, how has the issue been resolved? 👌).

To make this can be done using the utility MapKeyboard : after starting it, it is enough to specify two keys (what we change to) and save the settings. After rebooting the OS, everything starts working in a new way! The link below is for help!

By the way, for Windows 10, you can also use the special. utility - 👉 PowerToys (link to github). In its settings there is a section for remapping (and disabling) keys - "Keyboard Manager / Remap a key" (see screenshot below 👇).

PowerToys Utility - Customize Keys

Everything is simple in it:

  • on the left: indicate the key that will be disabled (or reassigned);
  • right: for off. keys set option "Undefined" (if you want to replace - then specify the desired key).

Undefined - The key will be disabled (PowerToys Utility).

Actually, it remains only to save the settings! 👌

Sticking (Shift)

There is one more thing in Windows that interferes with playing normally. We are talking about "sticking" - when you press Shift repeatedly, the game is minimized (the sound "pi ..." may appear) and an intrusive window appears ...

There are two ways to disable this.

First (for Windows 10): Press the combination Win + i, go to the menu "Accessibility / keyboard" and uncheck the box with permission incl. sticking. See example below. 👇

Windows Settings - Keyboard - Sticky

Second: open in 👉 the Windows control panel, go to the tab "Accessibility / change keyboard settings" .

Change keyboard settings

Then uncheck the sticky box and save the settings. The problem is solved!

Touchpad (for laptops)

Well, I can't help but note that the touchpad often gets in the way on laptops: you constantly touch it with your palm, fingers (of course, this is important if you connected a regular mouse).

In many cases, to disable the touchpad, it is enough to turn to the function keys: they usually have special ones. icon with a crossed out touchpad. If you press it together with the button Fn - the touchpad is turned off!

If you do not have such a key or it does not work, then the touchpad can be disabled in other ways. I talked about all of them in one of the previous posts, link below. 👇

If you have resolved the issue with the "unnecessary keys" otherwise - let me know in the comments (in advance, merci!).

That's it for now, good luck!
