Optimizing and configuring Windows for an SSD drive (automatically)

Good day!

Probably, many (at least) have heard out of their ears that for a longer SSD lifespan (and for better responsiveness) it would be nice to do a little optimization of the Windows OS (especially for 7) ...

But as a rule, all "this setting" is too dreary task, and for many inexperienced users - even complicated (click there, click here, check this / this ... (and if you had to reinstall the OS ...)). 😢

In this post, I would like to give another approach - auto (which will be performed for us by a special utility. We will only watch ...). For all-about-all, you will need a couple of minutes of time (the method is relevant for Windows 7/8/10, 32/64 bits).

So...

Optimizing OS for SSD

Automatic

For this operation, I recommend that you download and install the free (for now) utility 👉 SSD Fresh (link to official site).

What's so special about it: SSD Fresh automatically checks all basic Windows settings and shows you the optimization level. After that, he will recommend how to correctly change the key parameters (of course, all this can be done without leaving it directly - just switch the desired slider!).

SSD Fresh - Represents a level of optimization for your system to maximize the life of your SSD

By the way, to register the program (it's free) you need to indicate your name and your working e-mail! Specials will come to the mail. activation link ...

Now how to optimize

You need to open a tab "Optimization" - on the right you will have all the parameters (indexing, hibernation, defragmentation, etc.), some of which must be turned on, some must be turned off (the program will tell you what to do and how to do it).

But in general, I would still recommend clicking on the button "Auto-optimization" (arrow-3 on the screenshot below).

Optimizing settings (auto mode)

Literally in 10-15 seconds. the arrow of the speedometer (shows the level of optimization) will move to the green zone, almost to the maximum. 👇 What we need!

Now the speedometer is at maximum!

By the way, if you want to know which applications are loading your SSD in real time, go to the tab "Live-analysis" ... The utility will show how many MB this or that program has written to the drive ...

Which programs are accessing the SSD (which are the most loaded)

In general, after all the changes made, the program can be closed (the settings are not reset (until you change them manually or reinstall the OS)!).

Alternative

As an alternative to the previous utility SSD Fresh can I recommendSSD Mini Tweaker (link to the software portal). It is designed for a more experienced user and is made in an extremely simple interface (no prompts, no auto-mode).

How to use: just tick the items (Trim, Superfetch, Prefetcher, etc.) that you want to optimize and press the button "Apply" .

In terms of functionality, it certainly surpasses SSD Fresh (and yes, it has a full help in Russian. To call - click on F1).

How long will your SSD last?

A very popular question ... (could not help but touch on in this note).

There is one interesting utility: SSD-Z (link to official site). Among other characteristics of your SSD (and the tests it can run), there is such a parameter as "Bytes Written" (i.e. how much information has been written to the disc).

SSD-Z - Solid State Drive Information

So, knowing this value, and comparing it with the TBW resource (this is the disk resource / ie how much can be written to it), you can roughly estimate how much "left" to live for the drive.

Where to find the TBW resource for your disk:

  • on the official. manufacturer's website (for your specific model);
  • on the websites of large online stores (Nix, Citilink, etc.).

*

for example, in my case:

  • Bytes Written - 221 GB (how much is written to disk);
  • TBW - 80 TB ≈ 80,000 GB (how much you can write to disk);
  • Conclusion: wear less than 1% (which indicates a potentially good condition of the disk).

PS

Well, the last recommendation is quite "typical" - if you use "old" Windows OS - upgrade to 10! 😉 This OS already "knows" about the existence of solid-state drives and will not do "frankly" insidious actions (for example, defragment ...).

That's all for this sim today. Additions on the topic are welcome!

Happy settings!
