"The VAC was unable to verify the gaming session." What the ... error when starting a CS: GO game

Good day!

Relatively recently, a number of questions from colleagues in the CS: GO game "fell upon me": after its launch, when switching to the queue, an error began to fly out that "VAC was unable to verify the session ...".

Apparently, either the Windows 10 update was "screwed up" in the wrong direction, or something on Steam was done "crookedly" ... 😢

By the way, VAC is special. protection against cheats and any "shenanigans" with game files. Translated as Valve Anti-Cheat System. Therefore, if you installed some such tricky "things" the day before, then before eliminating the error (according to my notes below), it is recommended to remove them! (otherwise everything will be in vain)

Now about what should be done to resolve this problem ...

An example of an error (screenshot from the CS: GO game)

What to do if VAC "swears"

👉 STEP 1

The very first thing I recommend is to close Steam and restart your PC. Then reopen it and start the game: see if the error disappears ...

If you changed the game files with some "tricky" programs - the best option would be a complete reinstallation. 👌

👉 STEP 2

Next, you need to go to "library" with games and discover properties CS: GO (i.e. go to the properties of the problem game).

Library - game properties

In chapter "Updates" you need to clarify if automatic updates are enabled. See example below (👇).

Always update this game

Further in the tab "Local files" click on the button "Check integrity of game files" and wait for the operation to complete.

👉 STEP 3

If the above did not help, it is recommended to open the section in the Steam program "View / Settings" (👇).

View - settings

In chapter "Downloads" click on option "Clear download cache" ... Then restart Steam and try to start the game again ...

👉 STEP 4

In some cases, VAC cannot access the system due to Steam's lack of administrator rights (and as a result, an error has appeared ...).

The easiest way "rechecking" this moment: close Steam, click on its shortcut with the right mouse button (RMB) and select in the context menu "Run as administrator" 👇 (if you don't have such a menu - see this note).

Run as admin

👉 STEP 5

It is possible that certain Steam client files have been "corrupted" (although this is unlikely if you followed the previous steps). But still...

To exclude this problem as well - run 👉 command line as administrator and use the following command:

"C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Steam \ bin \ SteamService.exe" / repair

Through several. minutes, the Steam files should be rechecked (and restored if necessary). Then you need to open Steam and try to start the game.

Example

Note: the path to the Steam folder (👆) is specified when installing the program by default. If you changed the path, you will need to "adjust" the above command to suit you.

*

👉 STEP 6

Pay also attention to antivirus ... In some cases, some security software block the operation of games, Steam, etc. It is recommended to disable them for a while and check the system operation without them.

Note: most often, to disable the antivirus, just click on its icon in the tray. See example below with Avast (👇).

Disable Avast antivirus for 1 hour

👉 STEP 7

In addition, it is necessary to double-check current date and time (for example, due to an incorrectly specified time zone - the time may "move out", and because of this VAC limit the game ...).

date and time

To set the time in any version of Windows, just click Win + R (to bring up the Run window) and use the commandtimedate.cpl... See screenshots below. 👇

timedate.cpl - time setting

👉 STEP 8

Do not think of it as an advertisement, but I would advise you to run 👉 the Driver Booster utility and scan the system with it.

The fact is that, in addition to updating the drivers (which you can refuse), it will also check for the presence of the necessary libraries for games (like the same: NET Framework, DirectX, Microsoft Silverlight, etc.).

If you don't have these components, I recommend installing them using Driver Booster (it's faster! 😉).

Update everything - game components, sound and game devices, etc.

👉 STEP 9

Steam is not guaranteed to function after performing the steps below. It may need to be reinstalled ...

Several users recommended to me a rather original way of solving the issue:

  • close all games, editors, torrents and Steam;
  • go to the folder where Steam is installed (by default: "C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Steam");
  • delete the files from this folder: "Steam.dll" and "SteamUI.dll";
  • start Steam and try to open CS: GO. Is the error gone? ..

If you have solved the issue differently - please let me know in the comments!

I have everything on this sim, success!
