The monitor screen narrowed, black stripes appeared. What to do, how to expand the screen?

User question

Hello.

My computer began to work somehow strangely: the screen narrowed and the image became smaller, black stripes appeared on the sides. Also, the font and icons have become less clear, as if blurred (or shrouded in a "light" haze).

I blame one game that the children played the day before. It has already been deleted, but the image is still the same.

I thought at first that the monitor was broken, but when I connected it to another PC, the image on it is excellent. What can be done?..

Hello.

Most of all it looks like out of order resolution and scaling settings in Windows (usually, this can be fixed in 1-2 minutes).

However, other reasons are not excluded ... Below I will consider in order what needs to be checked and corrected in case of a similar problem.

What to do if the image on the screen has narrowed and is not clear

Check Resolution / Scaling in Windows

To automatically open the permission settings in any version of Windows - press the combination of buttons Win + R, and use the commanddesk.cpl.

desk.cpl - open display properties

Next, notice the lines:

  • Resolution (in my example 1920 x 1080) - it is highly desirable to set the recommended value for your monitor (Windows offers it automatically). It is also sometimes called the "native" permission;
  • Scaling (175% in my example) - Windows usually automatically determines the most optimal scaling option. Try changing it - at 100% the image on the monitor will be the clearest (but some elements may become too small for perception).

Display (Windows 10 Settings)

In any case, both the resolution and scaling are selected empirically based on the user's preferences (well, and the characteristics of the hardware, of course).

Check if the drivers are installed on the video card

Usually, this problem occurs immediately after reinstalling Windows (in some cases, when restoring the OS, cleaning after a virus infection, when changing some hardware).

To check if the video card drivers are installed - open the device manager and go to the tab "Video adapters" ... If the driver is installed on the card, there will be no exclamation mark on the device icon (see example below).

The driver for the video card is installed (on the left), there is no driver (on the right)

Also pay attention to the tray - next to the clock there should be a video driver icon (to enter the control panel). If it is not there, most likely you have an "incomplete" version of the driver installed (for example, the one that Windows picked up for you). See example below.

By the way, the video driver control panel also has scaling options. By changing these, you can adjust the size of the image on the monitor screen so that the "picture" is on the entire plane (without black bars). See the example in the screenshot below.

Are the monitor settings out of order ...?

Pay attention to the hardware settings of the monitor itself. Most models have an option to shift the image vertically / horizontally (for centering and calibrating the image).

By the way, more often than not, if you reset the settings to default or use the "Auto" mode (see arrow 3 in the photo below), the image will become correct, the most optimal for this device model.

Monitor setup - vertical and horizontal position

Note: Usually, the monitor adjustment buttons are located on the lower right panel.

Diagnose the monitor

If all of the above does not work, I recommend checking the monitor itself by connecting it to another PC / laptop. Perhaps there is a place to be those. device malfunction (by the way, this may also be indicated by the appearance of various stripes, ripples, a constant change in the width / height of the image, etc.).

Red stripes (artifacts)

By the way, pay attention also to when various interference and distortions appear: if the monitor malfunctions, as a rule, they will appear when entering the BIOS, and when loading the OS, and on the desktop, and in games ...
