How to create a GIF animation (gif): from videos, photos and pictures

Good day!

Quite often I get asked questions about pictures. True, I am not an expert in drawing and editing photos, etc., but I am familiar with the basic tricks.

In this article, I want to dwell on several ways to create GIF animations. If anyone does not know, then this seems to be an ordinary picture in GIF format, but it is played as a video: i.e. it changes dynamically (example in the first picture in the article, on the left).

To make such pictures, you do not need to have any special skills, just desire and a few minutes of time are enough. In this article, I will consider several sources for creating such GIF images: videos, photos and pictures.

From my experience, by the way, I will say that the most popular are "GIFs" created from frames of a popular movie or pictures. "GIFs" from photos are less popular, they are usually used to create avatars.

And so, let's get down to business ...

👉 Note!

This article will not teach you how to make professional GIFs. All methods in the article are given for a novice user, as simple and effective as possible. So that any in 5-10 minutes. got the desired result!

Ways to create GIF animations

From video

To work we need one simple program for working with multimedia files - "Video Master" (designed for novice users!).

*

👉 Video Master

Site: //video-converter.ru/

(note: the program "Video Master" included in the "Video Studio" package)

One of the best software for converting, compressing and cropping videos. It is very easy and simple to use, even for very novice users (which is why I recommend staying on it).

Concerning our task: in its complex of functions there is one we need - "GIF maker". I will consider it below ...

*

So, the issue of downloading and installing the program " Video Master " I omit (I think this will not be a problem 👌).

After starting the program, press the button "Add" , and open some video or movie in which you like some moment (and from it you want to make animation).

👉 Note!

It is advisable not to make the animation longer than 30 seconds. If you add a large video, for example, a whole movie, then we will choose a specific 20-30 second moment from it and make a "gif" ...

Adding a movie

Further in the list of added videos (on the left), select one you want (if you added 2-3 or more at once) and on the right above the viewing window, click the "GIF" button (see the screenshot below 👇).

GIF creation

The next step - the choice of the moment from which we will make the animation. For this:

  1. rewind roughly to the place where you want to set the beginning of the animation;
  2. then using the play button play the video and click the start button - when you get to the desired frame;
  3. Further, when you decide that on the next frame you need to complete your selected piece from the video - press the end button - ;
  4. when a section of the video is selected, press the button "Further" .

Selecting start and end of GIF animation

Now you must select the size of the animation. In this regard, the program is quite flexible: you can set both a standard size for an avatar, for example, 250 by 250 pixels, 200 by 200, or specify a specific size in manual mode (which I did in my example).

By the way, in the same step you can see what the GIF will look like.

GIF size

Last step: You must specify the number of frames per second and their playback speed. After the entered settings, you can immediately evaluate how the picture quality will change.

The higher the number of frames, the smoother the picture, and the more space it will take up. Long GIFs can be up to tens of MB!

Number of frames and playback speed

Actually, my animation is ready (example below). Quite good for a person who does it from big to big (in my opinion). 👌

The finished "GIF" ...

From photos and pictures (on a computer)

I will not recommend here how to create animations in large graphic editors (such as Photoshop or Gimp). Firstly, not all of them have them (and the packages are still large about in size), and secondly, using them is not so easy, even to create the simplest "gif".

Here and now I will give a very simple way to create a "gif" from pictures and photos, in just a few mouse clicks! For work we need the Photo Scape program.

👉  Photo scape

Website: //www.photoscape.org/ps/main/index.php

An excellent free program for working with pictures: it will allow you to view all popular graphic formats, edit them, compress them.

In addition, you can create a collage, animation, impose frames, create screenshots, change colors, etc. In general, in this program you can solve hundreds of the most popular problems with pictures.

As for animations - it's a pleasure to work with them in Photo Scape. Here, of course, there are no hundreds of tools, but those that are - allow you to create a "gif" in a couple of minutes (even for the one who launched the program for the first time)!

*

And so, let's get down to business.

After launching Photo Scape, you will be presented with a whole wheel of possibilities: editor, viewer, page templates, combination, batch editor, RAW converter, etc. Select an option "Create GIF Animation" (see screenshot below).

Create GIF Animation

Further you need to add all the pictures from which you want to make your "gif" (they are transferred to the upper part of the window from the explorer on the left, see the screen with explanations below).

In the center of the screen during editing - you will always see how your animation changes (it will play automatically).

On the right, you can set the basic animation settings: the time it will play (for example, 1, 2, 3 seconds), set the effect (so that the picture dissolves against the background of another or moves out, I have two examples below), specify the size of the picture, the background color, what to align, etc.

Animation display settings. Save the gif.

Of course, there are not many editing tools in the program, but they are all detailed and easy to use! Actually, when your "gif" is brought to the "mind" - just press the button "Save" (in the menu on the right).

By the wayPhoto Scape makes GIFs small enough to be optimized for web pages. Below I give a couple of examples of animations with different effects made in this program. In my opinion, very cool!

Effect 1. Fill frame with background

Effect 2. Nudge frame down

From photos and pictures (online method)

Site # 1: //gifius.ru/

A very easy and simple way to create animations from a wide variety of pictures and photo is to upload them to this site. The service will automatically play them one by one.

You just need to specify the width and height of the picture, and the speed of its playback. Next, you can download the resulting animation.

I also want to note one detail: the service understands PNG images with a transparent background: i.e. during animation, it will not "remove" the previous picture completely, but will combine both pictures (example below).

By the way, I made the logo for this post just on this service.

Easy and quick GIF creation

Site # 2: //ru.toolson.net/GifAnimation

Another site with simple and quick animation creation. All that is required from you is to download several images in sequence (or at least one).

Then select the dimensions of the future animation (for example, 200 by 200 pixels), and click the button "Create" ... In a couple of moments, you will see the result obtained (which you can download to your PC).

By the way, this service has small ready-made effects. For example, you can upload your photo and add a frame, hearts, etc. to it. You can make an excellent avatar for a forum or VK. It turns out very cool!

Animation effects: hearts, grayscale, frames

An example of the created GIF animation with hearts on this site.

Site # 3: //ezgif.com/maker

An English-language service for creating animations. To create an animation, you also need to load several pictures in sequence and press the create button.

But then ... the service offers you dozens of options for editing the result: you can change the size of the picture, crop it, rotate it, optimize it, add effects, change the playback speed, crop the edges, add a text caption, edit almost every frame.

In general, a huge package of tools, as in a very real large picture editor (example in the screenshot below).

That's it for now ...

If you find other easy ways - drop a few words in the comment (thanks in advance).

Good luck!
