How to find out the diagonal of a laptop or computer screen (approx .: 1 inch = 2.54 cm.)

Good day!

In general, I would like to note right away that questions about the diagonal are quite popular: both when choosing and buying a new laptop or monitor, and when solving various problems with an existing device (for example, if you need to set the correct screen resolution).

In this article, below are several ways to determine the diagonal. They are relevant both for those devices that you can turn on and see their properties in Windows or the manufacturer's firmware (for example, on your laptop), and for those that are off (for example, on a storefront) ...

Note: by the way, the image quality on the screen does not directly depend on the size of the diagonal! I have noticed many times myself how a 13 "laptop gives a much better picture than a device with a 15.6" screen (which generally has a "grainy" picture). And all this can result in eye fatigue (for example).

My advice: first of all, when choosing a screen, focus on the picture quality (and then on the diagonal).

Methods for determining the diagonal

To begin with, I want to demonstrate on the screen below what is meant by the diagonal: this is the distance between opposite corners of the screen (for example, between the lower left and upper right). Note that the size of the diagonal does not include "non-working" parts of the screen (ie, plastic rims around the edges) - you only need to measure the part where the image is shown!

What is the diagonal, how to measure it

And another important point: in stores, the size of the diagonal is indicated in inches, while most of us are used to measuring everything in centimeters (see). 1inch = 2.54cm.

Important! Below are the most common laptop sizes.

11 inches = 27.94 cm.

15.6 in = 39.624 cm.

17 inches = 43.18 cm.

19 inches = 48.26 cm.

Method number 1: visual (manual)

The way that suggests itself is to take a tape measure, measuring tape or ruler and measure(important: be careful with the metal parts of the tape or tape - they can scratch the surface of the screen).

Divide the resulting number by 2.54 - this will be the diagonal in inches of your device (this is what is indicated on all monitors sold).

For example, you measured your laptop and you got about 39.6 cm (if 39.6 is divided by 2.54, it will be 15.6). So your diagonal is 15.6 inches.

In this way, you can easily and quickly find out the diagonal of any monitor you are interested in on the storefront.

By the way, on some laptops and monitors there are stickers with all of their most significant characteristics. Here in the photo below, for example, an ACER laptop is shown: the sticker shows not only the diagonal, but also the amount of RAM, video card, processor, OS, etc.

Method number 2: using documents

I don’t want to be annoying, but still ... If you bought a device in a certified store, then you must have been given a whole "bundle" of documents for the device: characteristics, various instructions for turning on / off, etc.

Laptop specifications // page from the documents supplied with the device

Method number 3: with the help of special. utilities

One of the most famous utilities for viewing PC characteristics is AIDA-64 (once replaced by Everest). I recommend using it (the link to it is given below).

After installing and running the utility - just open the section "Display / Monitor" : In the tabs "Monitor type" and "Max. viewable area" you can find out the diagonal of the screen, its length and width in mm.

Addition!

There are a lot of utilities for viewing characteristics now.I would recommend paying first of all to these (there is also AIDA-64): //ocomp.info/harakteristiki-kompyutera.html#__Aida_Speccy

Method number 4: on the official. manufacturer's website

If you know the exact model of a laptop or monitor, then on the Internet on the official website of the device manufacturer you can find out all the ins and outs about it (sometimes you can even download special utilities there to fine-tune the device).

However, I will note once again that it is necessary to know not just the model of the device, but its exact modification. You can find it out:

  • in the same spec. utilities (AIDA, Everest, Astra, etc.);
  • on the stickers on the device case (look at the back of the monitor, laptop);
  • in his documents (passport).

That's all for me, for the additions on the topic - a separate merci!

Good luck!
