How to learn to type quickly on the keyboard without looking at it [blindly!]

Good time!

I think that no one will argue that the skill of fast typing in the modern world of computers is very useful. Allows you to express your thoughts in text without being distracted or looking from monitor to keyboard (which saves time, increases your productivity, and less eye fatigue).

To be honest, I am also sometimes asked how I learned to type quickly. (note: I myself do not consider myself a high-speed typesetter (only about 200 ÷ 250 characters per minute), although when I type, I hardly look at the keyboard) ... Some specialists are gaining 450-600 characters per minute - this is speed! (and world record 750)

In general, in this article I will give some tips (with an eye to my experience) that should help you improve this skill (at least, you yourself will notice that you will start typing faster).

So...

Addition!

By the way, specials can speed up your work somewhat. utilities for automatically switching keyboard layouts (from Russian to English, for example). I talked about them here: //ocomp.info/pereklyuchenie-raskladki-utilityi.html

How to Get Started with Rapid Typing

1) Master useful keyboard shortcuts

This advice is probably not very standard. But I recommend starting training with this. Why?

The fact is that many users waste a lot of time on the most common operations: edit / copy - edit / paste (moreover, do it with the mouse)... Imagine that every time you have to move your right hand from the keyboard to the mouse and back (it would seem, some seconds, but if you multiply them by the hours of work ... the number may surprise you!).

Now compare how much your speed of work would increase - if you did many operations simply by pressing 1-2 buttons on the keyboard (without using the mouse at all).

In addition, your fingers begin to quickly get used to the location of various buttons, and you automatically begin to feel where they are.

What are the basic keyboard shortcuts I would recommend knowing:

  • Ctrl + C (Ctrl + V) - copy / paste;
  • Ctrl + Z (Ctrl + Y) - undo the last operation;
  • Ctrl + A - select everything on the page;
  • Ctrl + S - save;
  • Alt + F4 - close the program / game, etc .;
  • Page Up - scrolling up (identical to the mouse wheel);
  • Page Down - scroll down;
  • Ctrl + T - open a new tab in the browser;
  • Ctrl + Shift + T - open the last closed tab;
  • Ctrl + R - refresh the page.

There are, of course, many more different combinations - but this is the basis that should work on "autopilot"!

Addition to the topic!

2) start practicing

You can't start typing quickly without typing anything. Those. to learn how to do something, you need to start doing it and practice the skill. For example, I once could type one sentence in 5-10 minutes. (one letter had to be searched for 20-30 seconds!).

What to type (this is usually the next question when giving this advice):

  1. you can start typing texts on study / work (for example, if you used to just take them from someone and remake them for yourself);
  2. correspond on various forums, blogs, social networks. networks;
  3. install a simulator (special program for teaching speed dialing) on a PC and print what this software will offer;
  4. you can start blogging (on the topic that interests you);
  5. if you play some games, then find like-minded people and discuss how to get through this and that ...

In fact, most of the communication on the web is based on textual information. So, there are a lot of options ...

3) learn how to properly hold your hands on the keyboard

For very fast typing, people with experience recommend using all fingers (including the ring and pinky fingers).To do this, take a look at the photo below, which shows the approximate position of the hands above the keyboard.

Note: Pay attention to the "F" and "J" keys - they have small serifs that will help you "blindly" find them with your index fingers.

Placement of hands above the keyboard

Next, pay attention to the diagram below: it shows which keys which finger is responsible for. Ideally, you should try to press these keys with the indicated fingers.

What keys are the fingers responsible for

Personally, I started out in about the same way, but over time I began to position my hands differently. it's only convenient for me (then I got used to one of my slightly non-standard keyboard, and I try to work with it ... ).

In general, the message of this subsection of the article: try to use all your fingers (or most) when typing.

4) Take a course (simulator)

Now on the net you can find dozens of different training programs. All of them promise that after completing their course, you will be able to type as fast as you think. In fact, this is not entirely true: a lot depends on your efforts, desires, and capabilities ...

Solo on the keyboard (screen from the official site)

What can we recommend:

  1. //solo.nabiraem.ru/ - "Solo on the keyboard". A very famous program that has taught thousands of people to quickly type. Built on the basis of step-by-step lessons, which will show and tell everything from A to Z. Each lesson works out a certain skill. In general, most of those who take these lessons start typing much faster;
  2. //stamina.ru/ - as the developers say, their simulator is suitable even for grandparents (to be honest, I have not tested !). The program is free, unlike the previous one;
  3. //sense-lang.org/typing/tutor/keyboardingRU.php - Free online quick-typing lessons. There are not so many of them, but their complex allows you to "work out" pressing for each finger! By the way, the service also allows you to learn foreign languages;
  4. //www.typingstudy.com/ru/lesson/1 - a similar service. It is built on the principle of minimalism: the site does not have cool graphics, but there is a convenient and interesting learning process (by the way, keep an eye on the tips that will appear during the learning process, there is a lot of useful information in them).

5) Try typing "blindly"

A very important tip! Until you start trying to type text and not looking at the keyboard (not looking for every key with your eyes), you will not learn how to type quickly. Initially, you may waste more time typing (and there will be mistakes), but it will be worth it.

As you practice, you yourself will not notice how you start typing much faster and you will search for each key less and less.

Finally, after a month or two, your fingers will find the desired key faster than the "head" (in fact, the reflex will be worked out: I want "o" - I shake my index finger in the center, I need an "l" - I shake my middle finger, etc. etc.).

6) Check sometimes your typing speed ...

Do you know why most people give up learning something new and useful? One of the main reasons: lack of progress (i.e. a person thinks that I am learning, learning, but there is no progress, all this is useless, etc.). Although, in fact, he may have already advanced quite far, he just himself does not "see" it.

You may not know how close you are to the goal. Always go all the way and don't give up! (famous poster)

That is why I would recommend to arrange for yourself sometimes "exams" (in the process of study): i.e. evaluate your typing speed. This will allow you to clearly see that the effort was well spent!

Where can you estimate your typing speed:

Received a silver certificate ...

A very interesting site. On it you can both practice your skills and learn to type faster, as well as take tests. If the test is successful, you will receive one of the certificates (there are 3 of them: silver, gold, platinum, depending on your typing speed and the number of errors).

Show your result ...

Another very interesting service that makes users compete with each other. To run the test - just start typing the sentence that is shown to you. Then just print, after 1 minute - you will see your result (see screen below). You can enter your name, and then your result will be saved in the history of the site.

//play.typeracer.com/

Competition on toy cars

This test is suitable for those who want to test their typing speed in English (by the way, in my case it is different from Russian, and, moreover, significantly).

The test takes place in the form of a competition (car racing). Whoever types the text faster will be the first to arrive at the finish line. A certain passion will spur you to train (well, at least until you win once or twice ).

PS

1) As the great Lenin bequeathed: "Study, study and study again..."... No courses and simulators will teach you fast typing without practice, without your desire. So, perhaps this is the most basic ...

2) And remember that you cannot suddenly learn anything like that! Those. if you start to study today, then tomorrow you will not start typing like a typist. Immediately get ready for daily training (practice), which will take a month or two (this is on average!). Only after such a marathon will it be possible to see real results.

That's all for now. If you have already learned how to type quickly - write what helped you, give a couple of tips in the comments (thanks in advance).

Good luck!
