How to open a broken AutoCAD drawing (DWG files)

Good day!

Like any other user, a design engineer with AutoCAD usually works with the Windows operating system, so he faces the same threats as the rest ...

And the integrity of the drawing files can be affected by viruses (most of which are written specifically for Windows), and file system errors, and disk problems - whatever ...

By the way, the * .DWG drawing format is used not only in AutoCAD, but also in simpler and highly specialized programs (for example, it can be found even among managers in hardware stores).

*

Actually, today's note will be just about the case when when you try to open a drawing file in * .DWG format, you will encounter errors (for example, the program may report that this cannot be done, because the integrity of the file is violated, there is no metadata, etc. etc., etc.).

Proceeding From experience, I can say that it is far from always worth giving up on a file if it does not open. In some cases, it is possible in 10-15 minutes. return him to "life" (well, or get at least some of the information out of him) ...

What to do if the drawing won't open

👉 STEP 1: check for corrupted files

Probably everyone has heard of backups (backups)? However, according to statistics, even the most careful users make a backup no more than once a day (week), which means that all changes in a day may be lost ...

If a we are talking about AutoCAD (note: the most popular program for working with drawings) - then the developers, of course, thought that there are different cases ...

And if AutoCAD starts after some kind of failure, then it automatically starts checking the file for errors and tries to fix them.

👉 By the way!

AutoCAD counterparts often do not have such powerful recovery tools!

The main advantage of the function of restoring from a backup is, in fact, that it built-infree , and quite effective!

If the automatic the scan does not start, but there are obvious problems with the file (for example, some objects are missing), then the process can be started manually via the menu: File / Utilities where to select the command "Check" .

Answer "Yes" to the system request "Fix any errors found?". Further, the check is performed automatically, you just need to wait for it to end (👆).

👉 STEP 2: file recovery manager and search autosave folder

In addition to automatic checks, AutoCAD has another powerful built-in repair tool calledDrawing Recovery Manager (it is in the tab: "File / Utilities /" ).

Open File Recovery Manager

When starting the service, the user sees a list of service files that can be used for recovery. The most recent changes to the document are in the autosave file.

If you want to roll back the last changes in the document, which may have caused problems, use a file with the extension * .bak (.sv $)... This is just an auto-save and does not include the most recent changes.

Latest files

If you cannot find anything through the manager, or AutoCAD crashes (when you try to open a file), then you can go the other way:

  • in parameters programs open the menu "Files" ;
  • find out the folder for auto-save (👇);
  • find files with the extension .sv $;
  • copy them to another folder and change the extension to * .DWG;
  • try after one by one to open these files in AutoCAD (or its analogs);
  • files recovered in this way will contain the data at the time of auto-save.

If something does not work for you / does not recover, or you are not working with AutoCAD, you will have to resort to other recovery methods ... A few words about them below. 👇

👉 STEP 3: recover files using third-party products

First of all, I recommend using the program Recovery Toolbox for DWG (👇).

It was specially designed to recover damaged * .DWG files, which for some reason cannot be restored using standard tools.

And so, step by step how to work with it:

  1. first you need to download Recovery Toolbox for DWG from the official page site: //dwg.recoverytoolbox.com/ru/;
  2. install and run the program;
  3. select the problematic .DWG file and start analyzing it (Analyze button);
  4. inspect the quality of the recovered file: you can zoom in, delete, rotate the drawing;
  5. if the program is registered, export the results to a new file (if not, you can purchase it, or just use the demo version to view the problematic .DWG drawings).

Online version of Recovery Toolbox for DWG

Unlike an offline program, an online service does not require installation on a computer. This allows you to upload files from any device, from any operating system. In this case, only a good Internet connection is required.

The recovery procedure is as follows (👇)

  1. Open the online recovery service: //dwg.recoverytoolbox.com/online/ru/;
  2. select a file * .DWG download format;
  3. Enter your email address and CAPTCHA verification code;
  4. Proceed to the next step;
  5. Pay for the document restoration service (if the drawing has been read and restored);
  6. Download the recovered file (Note: the downloaded file must open in AutoCAD. If the rebuild has not been completed, you will not be charged). Online service is more profitable than installing the program on a local computer.

PS

Of course, the best option is to avoid situations at all when you may need to restore damaged drawings. For this you need make a backup the most important files, the loss of which is critical for you.

If you do not want to use a cloud drive for this, then at least just drop the file to any external media: CD-disk, USB-flash drive, etc. 👌

If you have solved the issue somehow differently - let me know in the comments (in advance, merci!)!

Well, that's all for now, good luck!
